Over the last 15 years or so, we've seen a huge amount of fighting games. Mainly in the arcade where they became the most famous Fighting games are the games you would skip school to go to the arcade and play. There have been some bad, there have been some good, there have been some great. But there have also been the ones that are better then great, the ones that really influenced the genre for the better. This is what that list is for. It's for those top 5 fighters that were not only great, but groundbreaking and bringing in many newcomers into the fighting game genre.

Here is the list of the top ten greatest handheld fighting titles of all time as well as the best and superb fighting title to ever hit handheld history.

The average fighting game features a somewhat unknown cast of characters only seen in that particular series. On occasion a game company will try to generate higher sales by including well known characters. The addition of video game super star sometimes makes for very interesting results.

The fighting game genre has spawned many classics- I know that for myself and many other gamers, some of our earliest or fondest arcade memories are set to countless games of Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat. I begged my mom for a video game console after playing Mortal Kombat in the arcade, and probably wouldn't have ever ended up a gamer at all if not for those (at the time) wonderful graphics and enthralling shouts of "Finish him!". Here, in no particular order, are five classic fighters that this reviewer thinks stand at the top of the heap.

Beat'em ups, which are also known as Brawlers (and belt scroll games in Japan), generally focus on one player taking on a large number of enemies in some form of melee oriented combat.  The beat'em up genre is also well known for offering co-op gameplay for 2-4 players, which for some people is a big part of the genre's appeal.  The genre should not be confused with one on one fighting games inspired by Street Fighter II, which is a common mistake some gamers make.  Though there is some shared history and crossover between the two genres in terms of characters and certain gameplay elements, they are not the same.

When you take a look back at the original classic top ten nintendo games that made an impact on how you played the best games ever, such as super Mario Bros, Contra, the Legend of Zelda, and Duck Hunt, then you will find yourself on a quest back down memory lane with Super Mario, who is a warrior elf on this board game, that sets fourth on a mission to save princess Zelda. But before he could save her, Mario would have to fight King Cooper. With a sword and shield. Super Mario has to pass different boards by winning the board. Mario would gain magic through little flowers that sometime appeared on top of the blocks he crossed that gave him power, to defeat King cooper, before he could save Princess Zelda.

In the early days of video games beat 'em ups were very popular. From the beat 'em up genre came another sub-genre called hack and slash games. Hack and slash games are similar to beat 'em ups in that the game is mainly just a bunch of button mashing as you fight a myriad of enemies at once. The difference between a hack and slash game and a beat 'em up is that typically beat 'em up games require using your fists and feet and hack and slash requires using a sword or knife for most of the game. These are the ten best hack and slash video games of all-time.

It's great how video games have progressed over the past twenty years but every once in a while its nice to sit back and relax with an old school beat 'em up video game. Beat 'em up video games are games where the player controls a character that basically runs around beating up everybody on screen. The game is mostly made up of punches and kicks (and occasionally a weapon) but no complicated moves to execute like in fighting games. These are the ten best beat 'em video games of all-time.

I love RPGs, also known as role-playing games. No, I'm not talking about those games where you put on a makeshift wizard hat and are over-excited over the fact that your tin figurine just defeated Blorgon the Great. No, what I'm talking about are the videogames where you can explore a world to almost no end, where the storyline keeps you guessing at every turn (not always the case, sadly. I mean, how many times do we have to find the seven crystals, or fight and kill the last of an ancient race, etc.?), where your enemy kindly waits while you power up your Rain of Ultimate and Total Annihilation final move, the one where you summon thousands of swords from the sky to fall on one opponent, while lifting a boulder from the ground with your bare hands and throwing it on top of him, then to finish it up, call down the moon from the heavens to fall on his exact spot...which then only ends up doing 450 damage HP (about 1/20 of his damage meter) because your opponent was in a defensive stance during all of that. THOSE are the RPGs that I'm talking about.

When the Super Nintendo video game system was on the market, battling it out with the Sega Genesis system, I owned a Sega. However, I had friends who owned the Super NES and from time to time would play it. Comprising a very long list of Super NES games would be difficult for me, but I can list the three that I remember the most. On the Sega Genesis I enjoyed a variety of game styles, but most of my friends were into fighting games. So, when I was watching other people play the Super Nintendo it tended to be one of the Mortal Combat games getting shown off. Below are the top three games I enjoyed playing myself.

In 1991, a storm swept over the international arcade scene.  Street Fighter II swept the world, invigorating the arcade scene, determine the future of the ongoing home console war, and bringing a small genre fully into the public eye.  Much like Doom's effect on the First Person Shooter, Street Fighter 2 was followed by a legion of knock offs and clones, some mere travesties, and some with innovative and original ideas that would go on to further define the 2D VS. Fighter genre.
