A Conservative Choice for President | Michele Bachmann for President | MicheleBachmann.com - 0 views

  • Michele wants government to make the kind of serious spending decisions that many families and small businesses have been forced to make.
    • Alexander Condon

Here she is aligning herself with the middle-class which could serve to distinguish her from some of the other Republican candidates who have been critiqued for over-looking the middle-class. It also alludes to her dissatisfaction with recent government spending and bailout packages. She is siding with the everyday American who protested the extreme government spending amid the recession. Provides pathos as it shows her sense of financial responsibility and similarity with everyday Americans.
  • Michele is a leading advocate for tax reform, a staunch opponent of wasteful government spending, and a strong proponent of adherence to the Constitution, as intended by the Founding Fathers.
    • Alexander Condon

The sentence is elegantly written and effectively uses parallel structure which appeals to the audience's logic. The sentence concludes with a reference to the Founding Fathers which rouses nostalgia for the beginning of the United States. This nostalgia can be very affective as many Americans (especially Republicans) feel that government was best under the Founding Fathers. The Founding Fathers personify all that is great about being American-independence, democracy and strength. Founding Fathers also alludes to the joyous celebration of the Fourth of July (Independence Day) which provokes pathos. There is also a simile here as she compares herself to the Founding Fathers.
  • She is also a defender of the unborn and staunchly stands for religious liberties.
    • Alexander Condon

As " a defender of the unborn", Bachmann positions herself as pro-life. The phrase is a euphemism as it is a nicer way of saying against abortion. The second part of the sentence "staunchly stands for religious liberties" is likely a second euphemism stating her siding with the bible on topics such as same-sex marriage. Both stances develop ethos especially amongst Republicans and may also appeal to emotion as the topics are deeply personal.

  • In July 2010, Michele hosted the first Tea Party Caucus meeting. She is seen as a champion of Tea Party values
    • Alexander Condon

Here she positions herself of a leader of the Tea Party which adds considerable credibility (ethos) to her candidacy because of the Tea Party's considerable resources and growing popularity. It is important for Bachmann to identify herself as a leader as that is what people are voting for. Also note how the term "champion" is consistent with the website's continued emphasis on winning.
  • Michele and Marcus have five children, Lucas, Harrison, Elisa, Caroline, and Sophia. In addition, the Bachmann family has opened their home to 23 foster children
    • Alexander Condon

This sentence develops both ethos and pathos. Ethos as she is seen more reputable and trustworthy by having such a large and seemingly happy family. The main purpose here is pathos as she depicts herself as a loving and devoted humanitarian. She is portrayed here as a mother figure, someone responsible that can look after a large and diverse household (a metaphor for the United States?).This last statement develops a paradox between her portrayal throughout the passage as a tough candidate like one of the Founding Fathers, and her portrayal as a loving, responsible mother who can take care of the nation. Very Interesting.
  • Michele is the first Republican woman to be elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Minnesota
    • Alexander Condon

Interestingly, this is the only line in the passage that directly points to Bachmann's uniqueness as a female candidate. Potential supporters who were unsure whether she could become the first female president will be reinforced by her being the first Republican elected to the House of Representatives from Minnesota. It achieves ethos as she becomes a more credible candidate as well as logos because "if she was the first woman from Minnesota than why can't she be the first woman president". For the female audience, it may also be pathos as she is seen as breaking down barriers to womens freedom.
  • Michele Bachmann is running for president to bring a new voice to the White House
    • Alexander Condon

The main use of rhetoric in Bachmann's opening line is "bring a new voice to the White House". The new voice rhetoric is very common among presidential candidates as it is a metaphor for change. Indirectly this new voice represents the possibility of correcting the current governmental problems. It appeals mostly to ethos as it could inspire hope in the audience.
  • She recognized the need for quality schools and subsequently started a charter school for at-‐risk kids in Minnesota.
    • Alexander Condon

The sentence develops ethos and pathos in the audience. Ethos as her character and reputation is bolstered by her emphasis on education. Pathos as she highlights having started a school for at-risk kids; specifying "at-risk kids" adds emotion to the description and depicts her as empathetic.
  • Serving on the Intelligence Committee, she has consistently advocated peace through strength to ensure America's national security. She has proudly taken a vow to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.
    • Alexander Condon

Here she states her stance on foreign policy. She successfully aligns herself with the Americans who seek an end to the War in Afghanistan by stating that "she has consistently advocated peace". Also she answers the critics who think she won't be tough enough by saying that "she has proudly taken a vow to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies". She shows experience and ability by having served on the Intelligence Committee (logos). "Taking a vow" appeals to emotion as it carries the connotative meaning of commitment, dedication, and marriage.
    • Alexander Condon

The video introduction is a very persuasive addition to the website for several reasons:1. It provides a quick synopsis of the website that young voters and those pressed for time will greatly appreciate.2. Logos: She emphasizes having already been successful as a congresswoman. Describes herself as a hard-worker. Also note the attention to detail in having the message exactly one minute long.3. Ethos: She begins by establishing herself as an official candidate having done all the paperwork. Seems trustworthy through eye contact and fluent speech.4. Pathos:Talks about "taking your voice" to the White House and being a "winning team". Concludes by passionately telling viewers that "we can do this".
    • Alexander Condon

It's worth noting that she's wearing the exact same outfit from the picture in the top. This aspect is puzzles me, perhaps it's done to depict her as simple and relatable to the everyday American. Very interesting.
    • Alexander Condon

Argument/PurposeThe website is intended to convince Republican delegates and all other voting-age American citizens that Michele Bachmann should become the next US President and that they should vote for her.  Audience: The audience is voting-age Americans. It is not intended for Canadians or audiences from any other nationalities.
    • Alexander Condon

The picture depicts Bachmann as patriotic (the flag on her collar), conservative (seems to be conservatively dressed), and happy (the big smile-ethos). It's interesting that she's not looking at the camera but rather up and to the side. Might have been done because she looks better from this angle, or potentially to show her as ambitious and aspiring. -also note her husband's smiling picture located underneath the video. He is well-dressed (ethos) and again smiling (pathos). Showing that she's married also adds to her candidacy especially among the more conservative Republicans.
    • Alexander Condon

Bachmann logo found here at the top as well as at the very bottom serves to authenticate the document. It's symbolic of an official stamp or even the presidential seal. Of note are the stars (again the allusion to success and winning, as well as patriotic); the red, white, and blue classic American colours; and the red and white stripes through the 'H' in Bachmann which allude to the American flag. The authenticity of the stamp appeals to the logic (logos) of the viewer as well as adding to Bachmann's credibility (ethos). The patriotic symbolism appeals to the strong patriotic emotions of the visitors.
    • Alexander Condon

The page is entitled "A Conservative Choice for President | Michele Bachmann for President". It is significant because Michele is a Republican candidate and the party is built on conservatism. She is evoking ethos as stressing herself as a "Conservative Choice" establishes her as a good fit for the party.
    • Alexander Condon

The page exhibits a red, white, and blue theme. These symbolic American colours are used to evoke both pathos and ethos in visitors. Pathos as the colours appeal to emotions by giving American's a comforting patriotic feeling. Ethos as the colours help develop Bachmann's character as patriotic, loyal, and trust worthy. The colours also make it nice to read as they provide visual continuity.
    • Alexander Condon

also of note are the American flags hanging down from both sides which could be metaphoric of the hanging flags during the presidential inauguration
    • Alexander Condon

Notice how she puts social media options: email, texting, facebook, right at the top of the page where they will be seen by most visitors. This increases the accessibility to her site and updates and will be welcomed by younger voters especially. It also shows her as technically savvy and in-touch with the latest in technology (ethos).
    • Alexander Condon

It's interesting the attention being payed to social media in the wake of Obama being so effective using these tools in the last election
    • Alexander Condon

Another purpose of the site is to bring in donations from supporters to fund her campaigning. Notice how the donate button is coloured red so to stand out and draw attention. The red colour actually makes the audience want to click it, especially as it stands out from the other white tabs. It's that red button that we all want to press.
    • Alexander Condon

Pictures of Bachmann speaking with people in the community are persuasive by developing logos, ethos, and pathos. Logos: seeing her speaking with seemingly everyday people adds support to her claims of being "the voice of the people". Ethos: the pictures make her appear more trustworthy and reputable. especially the picture of her shaking a woman's handPathos: She is again smiling in the pictures which evokes happiness. She is also photographed speaking with hand gestures which shows passion.
    • Alexander Condon

Notice the applauding crowd in the background; the viewer assumes that the crowd is applauding for Bachmann and this provokes ethos as her credibility is enhanced by the image. It is also potentially pathos as it can be seen as a metaphoric image of a crowd during a (presidential) victory speech. The symbolic image of the victory speech evokes happy emotions of winning; relate it back to the video where she calls it "a winning team".
    • Alexander Condon

the audience almost seems to be looking up and towards the webpage, as if applauding Bachmann's message
  • she spent five years as a federal tax litigation attorney, working on hundreds of civil and criminal cases. That experience solidified her strong support for efforts to simplify the Tax Code and reduce tax burdens on family and small business budgets.
    • Alexander Condon

Here she documents her considerable experience with the tax system (logos). It serves to back her claims at being able to reform the tax system. Also we again see her aligning with the middle-class.

What's Wrong with Abortion - the case against abortion - 3 views

  • ul II writes:
  • The common outcry, which is justly made on behalf of human rights -- for example, the right to health, to home, to work, to family, to culture -- is false and illusory if the right to life is not defended with maximum determination.
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

This is an appeal to religion (since the authors quote a religious authority figure) as well as to morality. Without providing any kind of evidence, the authors attempt to convince people by telling them that it is their duty to oppose abortion.
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

      Ethos
  •  Abortion ruined my life and the woman I was involved with. We chose abortion to "save our careers" but it ended up costing everything.
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

This is a personal argument based on the author's own personal experience. Although it shows what can happen, the author makes it seem as though it is an inevitable result of abortion. However, it cannot be generalized as other people may have had different experiences and feel differently about the issue.

These pictures try to persuade people by making them believe that God does not condone abortion. It is also a reference to our 'playing God', which happens to be a common religious argument against scientific advancements. Furthermore, the depiction of children serves to demonstrate that children are an essential part of 'God's plan' and must, therefore, be protected. They also look weak and defenseless, which elicits an emotional response also known as the mother's / father's instinct.
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

      Ethos & pathos
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

This is a picture of a 14-week old fetus. It, too, is supposed to elicit an emotional response, or a protective instinct. Since the 'baby' is fully recognizable as a 'human being' (due to the fact that it certainly looks like one), it serves to reinforce the argument that abortion is murder.
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

      Pathos
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

The aborted fetus is supposed to make one feel disgusted and devastated as well as angry and sad. However, this is an 11-week old fetus (as opposed to the 14-week old fetus). It may be the case that there is a fundamental difference between an 11-week old and a 14-week old fetus in terms of their development into an actual human being.
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

      Pathos & attempt at logos
  • I'll call this girl "Sara."
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

By giving the fetus a name and referring to it as "girl", the authors emphasize that it is (in their opinion, that is) a human being.
  • Sara could not protect herself while the "doctor" cut her head off with fore snips. This is what abortion looks like.
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

This brutal description of what happened to the fetus in the picture once again elicits a strong emotional response. In addition to that, the author also fails to mention that there may be more to abortion than the 'killing' of 'human beings'.
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

      Pathos
  • Sara will never learn how skip or play hopscotch. She will never experience her first date or the prom.
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

This is an appeal to emotion. The authors make the readers recall certain significant past events such as their prom or their first date. By doing so, the reader is forced to think about what it would have been like if it had been him or her and the authors successfully make it a very personal issue.
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

      Pathos
  • Sara has been denied the right to vote, the right to freedom of speech, the right to work. All these things that women have worked so hard to achieve have been denied to Sara.
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

The authors then go on to argue that abortion is not only morally wrong but also politically wrong as it takes away several rights from a 'human being'. Furthermore, they compare it to feminist issues (which is also why they chose to call the fetus "Sara" and refer to it as a "girl"), thereby appealing to women and especially to feminists (whether they be male or female).
  • This first question we must ask ourselves when considering our opinion on abortion is this: "Is something being killed?" Everyone familiar with biology will answer yes. The next question is "What is being killed?" A simple way to answer this is to ask "Does it have DNA? The answer is yes. What kind is it? Human. The DNA at 5 minutes after conception is identical to the DNA 85 years after conception.
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

The authors try to argue deductively. However, they assume that everything they say is based on nothing but facts even though they never prove that everything that 'has human DNA' is in fact a fully developed human being.
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

      Attempt at logos
  • Every major abortion rights organization and doctor admits it is a human being.
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

The authors present this as a fact even though it is still a very controversial issue.
  • "Jane Roe" in the case has since said it was the worse mistake she ever made. How come you never hear that in the main stream media? She was a puppet for an abortion agenda, another example of the abortion industry's abuse of young women.
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

The authors try to persuade the readers that the women who decide to get an abortion are actually victims. Surely, some of them regret it but there are also women who do not regret it. By taking one example and presenting it as a general rule of thumb, the authors redirect the reader's anger toward the authorities and the institutions that support abortion.
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

      Ethos
  • Abortion is not the first time this word game of personhood vs. humanity has been played with human life. During the slave trade, it was acknowledged that black people were human beings, but not "persons". During the Holocaust, Hitler acknowledged that Jews were human beings. That's why he performed horrible experiments on them, but he did not acknowledge their "personhood."
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

By comparing abortion to slavery and to the Holocaust, the authors once again elicit a strong emotional and moral response that leads to the readers thinking about the wrongness of the act. Abortion is thereby inevitably depicted as a crime (or even genocide), which is an attempt to make people want to oppose it.
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

It seems like the authors are trying to make it look like an appeal to logos rather than pathos.
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

Once again, this picture's purpose is to convince people that fetuses are fully developed human beings and that nothing really distinguishes them from any of us.
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

However, just because the fetus is comprised of 46 chromosomes does not necessarily mean that a fetus is the same as a newborn baby.
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

      Attempt at logos
  • A newborn is not as well developed as a toddler. I am more developed than toddler.
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

This comparison is invalid since the real question is whether a fetus is "alive" yet. Toddlers and the authors are without a doubt alive. Yet, the authors' use of an analogy is quite interesting as it seems to be an attempt to appeal to logic.
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

      Attempt at logs
  • Yes the unborn baby lives in a unique environment. But I do not cease becoming a human when I travel to work, or home. Environment does not determine personhood.
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

Once again, this analogy is invalid. One's workplace and one's home are both situated in a world outside of the womb whereas a fetus is not a part of 'our' world yet.
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

      Attempt at logos
  • In the last 30 years approximately 21,500,000 women have died violent deaths in the United States. They have had their arms ripped off, they have had their legs ripped off, they have had their heads cut off. These women were defenceless, they could not speak out to defend themselves. They remained silent as they were brutally murdered. These women were not fully grown. They were waiting to be born. These women died from abortion. Most abortionists are men who say that they are in favour of women's rights and they say they shun violence against women. Obviously, they are not in favour of the rights of women in the womb.
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

Once again, the authors appeal to feminism and claim (without any evidence) that abortion is, indeed, murder. They are thereby taking the peripheral route rather than the central route to persuasion as they focus on the emotional rather than the factual / logical aspects of the matter.
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

      Pathos
  • Half of women carrying babies have a little boy inside them with a penis. Is that penis a part of her body? That would be a first.
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

The authors' use of sarcasm is quite effective in this case as it helps make a point regarding the difference between a woman's body and the fetus's body.
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

      Logos
  • The abortion industry is a multi billion dollar industry and Planned Parenthood is now exporting this industry to countries around the world like a McDonald's franchise.  I just attended a summit on "Population Control" in Ottawa. It is scary to think that we are now trying to export abortion to countries around the world the way we export wheat. Much of this is being paid by our governments.
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

Making it seem as though abortion is but a business distracts from other aspects of it such as 'abortion as a result of rape' etc. and redirects anger toward the institutions that support it. Hence, people's desire to put an end to abortion grows (if they do not critically reflect on it, that is).
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

      Pathos
  • I believe that as Christians we are obligated to step in. The Bible makes it clear that it is wrong to stand by as innocent blood is shed. (Deut 21:5, 7-9; Ezk 22:3-4, Is 1:15-16, Lev 18:21. ) Ruben rescued Joseph (Gn 37:21-22), Hebrew midwives rescued baby boys from the infanticide of Pharaoh (Ex 1:17) The solders of Saul rescued Jonathan from murder (1 Sam 14:45), Obadiah rescued 100 prophets from Jezebel. Esther risked her life to save her people from genocide.
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

Once again, this is an approach to religion and morality and abortion is depicted as murder and genocide. This also elicits an emotional response.
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

      Ethos
  • 23,000 couples in Canada and 230,000 couples in the US want to adopt children. Many go overseas to find babies because North Americans abort the majority of our unwanted babies.
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

The authors distract from the real issue at hand and even blame women who decide to have an abortion for the hardship of couples who wish to adopt a child. This might actually help win them over, too.
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

      Logos
  • "Oh Lord give us the strength to not only experience our horror at this holocaust but the courageously stand up and be counted and to follow the heroes who brought down the slave trade and those who saved Jews from the Holocaust."
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

The repetition of a previously mentioned idea only re-emphasizes its importance and elicits the same emotional response again (and perhaps even a stronger one than before).
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

      Pathos
  • after the Genome project
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

Mentioning the Human Genome Project makes the authors' claim seem more factual and believable.
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

      Ethos
  • Fertilization is the miracle moment, and all 46 chromosomes are coming together. It's when life begins. It is new human life.
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

The description of the process ('a miracle') once again adds a religious or a spiritual aspect to it. Claiming that it is in fact a 'new human life' ignores the actual controversy around the issue and effectively introduces the next and final argument.
  • It is the killing of an innocent human. Lord Jesus, let Your prayer of unity for Christians become a reality, in Your way we have absolute confidence that you can bring your people together we give you absolute permission to move Amen
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

Repeating the main statement (it is murder) and ending the discussion with a 'prayer' emphasizes the wrongness of the act as well as the religious aspect of it. We should not play God because 'in Your way [God's way] we have absolute confidence', meaning that if God wanted it to happen it would happen naturally (by itself). Furthermore, ending the discussion the same it started is also very effective as it demonstrates that it is now 'complete' (like a 'vicious' cycle that one cannot escape).
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

      Pathos & ethos
  • I do not come to the Pro-life movement for some altruistic reason, I come through my own experience and suffering.
    • Marcus Ramirez-Santoyo

The authors are trying to establish credibility (ethos).

The Morgan Horse - 2 views

  • Beginning in 1789 from a single stallion, Justin Morgan, today’s Morgan continues to carry the features of its founding sire.
    • eliza ediger

the first paragraph of this site tells a little about the Morgan horse. It also discribes the horse, making it sound like a well built horse, that can be used for any riding type. Finally they end the first paragraph, telling us that once you have one Morgan you would most likely like another.
    • eliza ediger

This paragraph appeals to character, since the first morgan horse was so willing and strong the Morgan today should carry some of the originals personality.
  • A short broad head, small sharp ears, a long laid-back shoulder, deep body and straight, clean-boned legs, make the Morgan the choice of both casual rider and the earnest professional. Once you have owned one Morgan, you will want another.

  • Agility, athletic ability and stamina, make the Morgan and ideal working horse - whether it is used for stock horse events, competitive trail riding, or jumping. The in-bred ground-covering trot make the Morgan the first choice as a driving horse, for pleasure or show.

What types of riding the morgan horse is used for and is good at is described in short paragraph, showing how much the horses can do and how useful this horse can be.

This website has a kind of slogan for the morgan horse, this would apeal to emotion.
    • eliza ediger

The website colours are shades of green and white. The white is useful for contrast between the words and pictures making the words easy to read and pictures standout. Altrough the green looks good on the title banner and menu bar, the green colour around the page seems not to go good with the website.
    • eliza ediger

The title banner has show pictures of morgan horses and some morgans relaxing. This banner's green shade is relaxing and comforting, it makes the Alberta Morgan Horse Club seem like it will be a comfortable environment to learn about the activities of the Morgan horse.
  • And did someone mention Verstatile?
  • The finest and oldest of North America’s light horse breeds     The Horse with a Future     Elegant, Willing and Versatile
    • eliza ediger

Appeals to pathos, by saying that his horse has a future and has had a historicla past.
  • Sales of Alberta-bred Morgan horses throughout Canada and the United States attest to the high quality of stock produced
    • eliza ediger

This appeals to logic beacause if some one is buying a morgan horse to breed or show, they would want a "well-bred" horse. And this site is saying that the horses bred in Alberta are sold in Canada and the United States. So if you want a horses they say you could get a good one from Alberta.
    • eliza ediger

All the pictures of the morgan horse doing different disciplines, shows and pleasure riding shows how the horse is verstatile. These pictures appeal to emotion because the rider who gets a morgan could use them for anything. And logic because they may want a hore that is willing to do whatever discipline they want to pursue.

There is no presentation so complex that this rule needs to be broken. No cheesy images. Use professional stock photo images. No dissolves, spins or other transitions. Sound effects can be used a few times per presentation, but never use the sound effects that are built in to the program. Hearing Disorders in Children With Fetal Alcohol Syndrome: Findings From Case Reports - 0 views

  •
Fourteen children with the fetal alcohol syndrome were evaluated by standard audiologic procedures. Thirteen of the 14 children had childhood histories of hearing disorders. All 13 of these children (93%) had clinically significant histories of bilateral recurrent serous otitis media (ie, they were otitis prone), and at least four children (29%) had bilateral sensorineural hearing losses in addition to being otitis prone. Many of the children with recurrent serous otitis media required repeated myringotomies with placement of ventilation tubes, and those with sensorineural hearing losses required sound amplification during childhood. Recurrent respiratory infections (secondary to immune deficiencies) and eustachian tube dysfunction (secondary to embryonic malformations of the first and second branchial arches) are discussed as possible etiologic factors in the presence of the recurrent serous otitis media. An alcohol-induced neuroectoderm syndrome and alcohol ototoxicity are discussed as possible etiologic factors in the occurrence of sensorineural hearing loss. The findings suggest that hearing disorders are a heretofore unrecognized characteristic of the fetal alcohol syndrome. Such hearing disorders may contribute to the speech and language and learning difficulties seen in children with fetal alcohol syndrome. The present study also provided confirmatory evidence of visual, health, and speech and language disorders in

  • anyone can make money online . With the ‘One Child One Laptop’ scheme that’s heading to Africa, and the large-scale attempts to provide the continent with a secure internet connection this could see one of the largest continents joining us online to share their views and earn themselves some money. This will give them access to all the education they could need as well as the resources they’d need to make the most of that. Many of them could see themselves working their way out of poverty – and online they can expect the same wages as other continents as its faceless nature eradicates discrimination. One of the positive effects of internet use then is that it could help some people in escaping from the poverty trap.

this is another example for good effect of the Internet which is everyone can use the Internet making money.
  • Destroying industry and providing a place for these deviant ‘subcultures’ to converse? Those too are perhaps the most positive effects of internet use. These are the things that promise to change the way politics and business work forever and potentially usher in a new age of supreme democracy and resources. Granted, there are some sub groups online that we’d probably rather there weren’t, but at least if they’re online they can talk to each other and leave us alone. Other ‘subcultures’ however simply reflect different ways of thinking – and the internet gives them an open forum to freely express themselves, something that everyone has a right to do.

what is yoga? types of yoga, videos & more | lululemon athletica - 2 views

  • Yoga energizes our bodies and calms our minds.
    • Jovan Gill

This simple statement is very powerful. By claiming that yoga energizes our bodies and clams our minds will appeal to many people, as everyone wants peace of mind and an energized body.
  • yoga quickguide
    • Jovan Gill

A quick and easy description of the different types of yoga is a definite attraction. One doesn't have to read the complete pararaphs below to get small description about the various types of yoga. One can also find out what types they are interested in and then read in further detail about those certain types.
    • Jovan Gill

The video showcases a certain type of yoga, which catches the eye and appeal of those watching. If you watch some of the video you can't help but wonder what it would be like to try antigravity yoga, and how much a hammock could make a diffeerence in your stretching compared to just the sterotypical on the ground yoga.

  • This practice is very athletic and made up of six vigorous series of postures
    • Jovan Gill

This type of yoga attracts those who are looking for a high intensity workout, and maybe did not expect that yoga could be a very athletic activity.By putting very athletic and vigourous in the same sentence a picture of a tough but appealing activity comes to mind, well appealing for those who want a intense workout.
  • Heads up - humidity is 40% and will knock you over the first time.
    • Jovan Gill

By saying that the humdity will knock you out the first time, the reader knows that this type of yoga is not for those who are looking for a leisurely activity. It attracts those to it by clearly saying "Heads up", which implies an important point that should likely not be missed.
  • By adding heat it is said that classes will help you lose weight, loosen your muscles (by adding increased range of motion) and improve your cardiovascular system.
    • Jovan Gill

By simply adding heat to yoga, so much more is achieved from exercises. Many people do yoga in order to lose weight, and by adding heat that goal can be achieved all the much easier.
  • Don't be surprised if your waving your hands like you just don't care or laughing uncontrollably, this practice is intended to wake up the kundalini energy coiled at the base of your spine while activating chakras (energetic centers in the body), as well as detox the body and mind.
    • Jovan Gill

This paragraph gives a different aspect of yoga that most people don't think about. "Laughing uncontrollably" and "waving your hands like you just don't care" imply a fun and energetic workout, which attracts anyone that wants to have a good time. It's a great thing that kundalini yoga awakens the energy coiled up at the base of your spine. So you get energized and receive a detoxification of the body and mind.
  • Remember: your body is your best guide. You don't have to stick to one kind of yoga, just do what your body needs!
    • Jovan Gill

This sentence relieves any tension or stress one may feel when they are thinking about taking up yoga. It tells the reader that if you don't feel right about doing a certain type of yoga, try a different kind. There is no pressure to keep up with the same type of yoga if your body doesn't feel right doing it. This lessens the anxiety most people feel when they are considering taking up a new activity.
    • Jovan Gill

In this picture a sense of community is felt. The many legs with black yoga pants on top of the colourful yoga mats with a sunset in the background give a sense of happiness and belonging. Everyone is doing the same pose which shows that anyone can do yoga. Since only legs are shown and no faces or bodies, it implies that it doesn't matter what race, age, sex or athletic ability you are, anyone can participate in yoga and become a part of a community while getting healthier.
    • Jovan Gill

In this picture the bright colours of the woman's clothing and the prop that is helping her with her yoga poses immediately grabs the attention of the reader. Her closed eyes imply a relaxed state, which shows that props help enhance a peace of mind and serenity.
    • Jovan Gill

The lush green field with the three people doing a sun salutation makes most people want to be there and do yoga. The bright sunlight in the video, with a luscious green field act as a open invitation to those who want to practice yoga. And in this video they are teaching the perfect exercise for that scenery, the sun salutation.
    • Jovan Gill

The light pink/peachish colour brings the readers attention to this quote. On a page that is full of black text on a white background our eyes are drawn to the saying which sticks out like a sore thumb on the web page. Also the swirly type text pulls in the reader, since the rest of the page has a standard text that is easy to read but not nearly as appealing. This quote changes everytime one opens the page, and it is also a part of the lululemon manifesto. These quotes appear on many pages of the site, and they are the attention grabing text on every page.

  • The Peace River coalfield, which extends for 400 km through the northeast part of British Columbia, was first discovered in 1793. Due to lack of infrastructure, mining in the early days was limited to small operations serving local needs. The expansion of steel production in the mid-1960's, led by the Japanese steel mills, stimulated exploration for metallurgical (coking) coal on a global scale. Within ten years the majority of the land within the Peace River coalfield with coal mining potential had been acquired and explored by various mining and oil companies.

Victims of Violence - Protecting Children from Sexual Abuse - 5 views

I am very happy to see that the age of consent and power has changed to reflect that even young children can sexually abuse. Any kind of sexual act without consent is rape, no matter the age.
  • It is a criminal offence in Canada under section 150.1 to engage in sexual activity with a child under the age of sixteen, regardless of the child’s perceived or actual consent.
  • Incest, or sexual contact with a family member, is always illegal

What is it that makes sexual abuse so 'acceptable' in society? Why isn't sexual abuse looked at as a devestating-traumatic-life-altering-soul-crushing violation? What can we do to make this change and get tougher on these predators?
  • According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, pedophilia is a paraphilia in which an individual has intense and recurring sexual urges towards prepubescent children
  • there are basically two groups [of pedophiles]: those oriented exclusively toward children and those oriented toward both adults and children.” Thus, there are two main categories of pedophiles; the first category consists of Preferential Pedophiles, who like children of a certain age group and tend not to stray from that. The second category consists of Situational Pedophiles, who are often incapable of forming relationships with an equal (adult), sometimes because of a mental disability. The Situational Pedophile may turn to children after experiencing humiliation or frustration in an adult relationship.
  • large percentage of individuals who suffer from pedophilia were sexually abused as children. However, the vast majority of adults who were abused as children do not develop pedophilia or pedophilic behaviours
  • Younger children may not display signs of being harmed by sexual abuse because often the perpetrator is a person they know and trust; the child may seem unaffected by the perpetrators actions and may not show signs of resistance. However, this does not mean that the child has not been harmed by the sexual abuse. The lack of resistance children sometimes show also contributes to their feelings of guilt and their fear of disclosing because they do not want others to assume they “invited” the incident. Disclosure of sexual abuse varies. Some children disclose their abuse immediately, while some are unable to due to their feelings of fear, shame, guilt and confusion.

95% of abusers know their victims. These people can be someone in our family, our doctor, our coaches, our troop leaders, our clergy, our teachers. This means that as parents we need to be more vigilant and ask questions about those who are in our childrens lives. Keep your eyes and ears open, listen to your child when they are talking to you as they often insert warnings into their conversations with us to test how we will react.
  • The effects of child sexual abuse are different for everyone.
  • Research has shown that these negative consequences most often include anxiety, refusal to eat, nightmares, anger, fear of adults and authority figures, chronic stress, posttraumatic stress disorder, drug abuse, inappropriate sexual and self-destructive behaviour, increased risk of victimization, delinquency, depression, suicide, and the inability to trust and have intimate relationships
  • Many factors can influence a victim’s response to their abuse including being believed, the relationship between the victim and the perpetrator, the duration of the abuse, personal support resources (emotional, financial), cultural factors, age and maturity of the victim, degree to which the victim feels responsible for the incident, life stressors, and time between the abuse and the beginning of therapy.
  • Psychologist Frederick Mathews’ research on child molesters, “Help for Adults Who Molest Children,” is written for individuals who sexually abuse children. The literature emphasizes that individuals who have molested a child must immediately receive help to decrease their chance of reoffending. Mathews stresses that child molesters are not likely to stop sexually victimizing children on their own, intervention is required. It is important that child molesters ask for help so that they can learn to understand why they commit these crimes, the sexual assault cycle and their triggers. There is not a quick fix to this problem, it requires a lifetime of work and treatment.
    • Anna Banana

No shit Sherlock! This has been happening for who knows how long, since the Romans and their grand orgies perhaps, and although many sexual abuse victims do not go on to repeat and reoffend, sexual abuse is a VICIOUS cycle that needs to stop!!
  • Protection of children from this harmful crime and its life-long negative effects must be a primary goal.

      THIS IS MY MISSION!!!!
  • In 2001, Researchers at the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine and University College London reviewed the case notes of 225 male sex abusers and 522 other male patients being treated in a London clinic. The study found that the child abusers had been victims of sexual violence more often than the patients who had not committed sexual abuse. This finding suggests that there is a victim-to-perpetrator cycle in some men who commit sex crimes. Psychoanalytic theory proposes that a hostile childhood can create a need to replace feelings of “defeat” with those of “triumph.” For an individual to accomplish this emotional shift they may become a sexual aggressor as an adult.
  •
Child sexual abuse occurs when an older child, adolescent or adult engages in sexual activity with a younger child or youth; sexual activity includes a variety of sexual contact ranging from sexual touching to sexual intercourse.

The shade of yellow determines the meaning. Pure, bright and sunny yellow is the easiest color to see. People who are blind to other colors can usually see yellow. Yellow is full of creative and intellectual energy. the bright yellow color on the logo creates reasoning and emotion.

The background colour is plain white to really make the link options to stand out. When I first opened this page my eye had to adjust, I find it very unusually that Carle has made his back ground colour white.

Very simple but it could almost be too simple but I believe that is page is more geared towards people who don't go online very often or children.
