QM, the rising star in the RAE...oh dear, 57th this year, a drop of 10 places. My alma mater...Heriot-Watt...up a stonking 30 places from 52 to 22. Hurrah! Of course, we shouldn't believe league tables should we?

Kinda Learning Stuff: Struck by a thought or so... - 0 views

  • Listening to a Webcast from the Open University on "The Net Generation" I'm struck again by how much time we spend trying to categorise and label technologies and usage of technology which are used innately by those who are the most active participants. It reminds me of David Attenborough, high on the African plain doing a softly worded piece to camera about the behaviour of the animals he's observing... all the while the animals in question are simply getting on with their own thing and merrily ignoring his insightful, considered words.

Quick commentary piece on working-class students being disadvantaged at universities that made me think of the Transitions project. Also of interest to the Graduate Attributes project: Goldsmiths' mission statement. It offers "a transformative experience, generating knowledge and stimulating self-discovery through creative, radical and intellectually rigorous thinking and practice."

Immediately made me think about someone in a College department, which will remain nameless, who proudly proclaims that they fail a large number of students...like it's some kind of badge of honour! This article would appear to hit the nail on the head but unfortunately it's a problem that's doesn't have a "simple" solution like lowering entrance standards or handing out more Oxbridge scholarships.

University careers aren't what they used to be | Times Higher Education (THE) - 0 views

  • Traditional” academic roles involving both teaching and research actually slightly declined in number and, for the first time, constituted a minority. Instead it was the rise of teaching-only and research-only contracts that accounted for the growth.
  • here is a perception that career options and opportunities are less important for those not in traditional teaching and research roles.

Claire and I were talking about emotion and learning (and mentioned Freud in passing) - a lecturer of mine who was involved in the setting up of Sussex University talked about the influence of Winnicott on her approach - the importance of play in HE - but that was a long time ago before everything got so serious!

Clemson University in the US found that students going abroad had a hard time articulating the value of their time overseas to employers, so got them to use multimedia to produce projects which would help them to understand what they had learnt about intercultural exchange. Strikingly similar to the social network project and the module I am proposing in SLLF!

  • The story of the frustrated student is the subject of a short video produced by students at Manchester Metropolitan University. The university is looking into alternative ways to communicate with students, specifically an SMS service in which messages are sent directly to students’ mobile phones. The system is incredibly simple: staff post a message to the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), and if the message is urgent, the staff member begins the message with the keyword ‘urgent’. The next 160 characters are then sent as an SMS. It’s an opt-in system which students value - not least because they are more likely to receive the messages if they go straight to their mobile device.

Have you seen the "Dim the lights" feature on the video player? How camp is that? It's the usual suspects on here...Harvard, Yale, Stanford, MIT...wonder if anyone outside the States is going to partner with them. It's got an interesting "Playlist" feature, which isn't your own playlist but a playlist compiled by an "editor" which can feature videos from across different institutions. Quite neat.
