I've had teachers ask, "What is the difference between essential questions (à la Understanding By Design) and driving questions?" In my opinion, essential questions, when created to their utmost potential are driving questions. Driving questions are just essential questions that are high on caffeine. They demand authenticity and rigorous problem-solving, which essential questions can do, but don't always. In addition, essential questions are often created to be more like enduring understands or learning targets. Those are great, but shouldn't be confused with driving questions. Essential questions that sound like enduring understandings (2) are not exciting and do not DRIVE the learning, which brings me to my next point.

PBL does not focus on stale memorization of boring textbooks, but motivates students to investigate from a multitude of sources just like historians, writers, and scientists do. On top of these skills though PBL is also about DOING. It is not enough for students to be passive about learning but to be actively involved taking it much deeper. PBL is much more like actual jobs than the traditional classroom is.

Digital portfolios of student work are powerful to help students see how they have grown over time. In turn, they support confidence in students to tackle things they may have once thought too difficult to learn. I have used wikis for this purpose, and they work well, but Evernote, with its apps for smartphones in addition to web access and desktop apps, is more versatile. In addition, students can take photos and make voice recordings to add to their notes, and share folders with their teachers and group members. Great tips here in this article.

AAPPL Measures and IPAS I think tests are stupid. A test can't tell you how well I do my job or live my life--or anything you really need to know about me. Now, I'm really good at taking tests, and if you were to look at various test scores I've accumulated in my life, I daresay you'd be impressed with me. But do you know how much bearing the ACT, SAT, or GRE has had on any of my roles since college or grad school application time? Do you know how much impact that Issues in Teaching Foreign Languages or Masterpieces of Hispanic Art and Literature exam has had on me as a teacher, mother, wife, or friend--or even as a speaker of Spanish?
