  • Since 1984, the VSA arts International Young Soloists Program has been seeking to identify talented musicians who have a disability. The VSA arts International Young Soloists Award is given annually to four outstanding musicians, two from the United States and two from the international arena. The award provides an opportunity for these emerging musicians to each earn a $5,000 award and a performance in Washington, D.C.

Because a skilled teaching artist can foster creative engagement and help build an inclusive environment, VSA is seeking outstanding teaching artists with disabilities for the Teaching Artist Fellows program. The VSA Teaching Artist Fellowship program seeks to identify, engage, and support teaching artists with disabilities in the visual and performing arts. VSA recognizes the value of teaching artists in integrating the arts into education. Teaching artists with disabilities also serve as role models of diversity, expression, and inclusive learning in the classroom.

    A free workshop for teachers, teaching artists, staff of arts organizations, parents and paraprofessionals -- lunch will be provided. Participants will learn: How school-based teasing, taunting, bullying, harassment,  and physical aggression need to be addressed through comprehensive, evidence-based, and ecologically-sound assessment to intervention approaches at the primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention levels; How to apply Project ACHIEVE's "Special Situation Analysis" approach to interventions at these three levels ;  How to leverage social skills training, peer-mediated approaches, school-wide accountability systems, school safety systems, and home-school collaboration to address these situations; Why interventions need to focus on the bullies, victims, and bystanders who are involved in these inappropriate interactions.   • VSA, renowned artist Simon Mckeown, and 17 countries around the world are celebrating the International Day of Persons with Disabilities with screenings of the groundbreaking video installation Motion Disabled to raise awareness of disability rights. Mckeown uses motion capture, a technique used in feature films and video games, and 3D animation to explore digitally the movements of 15 people with disabilities performing activities from kickboxing to riding a bicycle. This mesmerizing installation challenges conventional ideas of motion. Watch the video online or find a screening near you.
