Individuals who have both mental illness (MI) and intellectual/developmental disability (IDD) present clinical challenges to professionals as well as to the systems that attempt to provide care to these individuals. Clinicians frequently have difficulty in appropriately identifying a mental health disorder, even when one exists, in persons who have limited verbal skills. This six-hour workshop is designed to provide the participant with clinical information that will help in the assessment, diagnosis and support strategies necessary to provide appropriate care for this underserved group of people. The participant will learn how mental health signs and symptoms are manifested in persons with a dual diagnosis as compared to those with only mental illness. Upon completion of this training, you will: Articulate the profile and characteristics of people with MI/IDD; Articulate vulnerability factors in people with MI/IDD; Identify best practices in assessment procedures for people with MI/IDD; Identify signs and symptoms of MI in persons with IDD; Describe the major features in the Diagnostic Manual - Intellectual Disabilities (DM-ID); Describe techniques associated with supportive therapy for persons with MI/IDD; Identify the value of the NADD Accreditation and Certification Program. Adaptive ball game - all equipment provided. We will have mitts of all sizes as well as soft and hard bats, softballs, wiffle balls and an auditory ball. Everyone hits, rounds the bases and scores. Bring snacks if you like, otherwise just bring yourself!

The Montana Children and Nature Initiative (MCNI) is a state-wide collaboration of public and private partners working to promote healthy kids and families and build future leaders and stewards by connecting kids with nature, supporting place-based education and getting families outside. MCNI is working with Montana Office of Public Instruction, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, Montana Environmental Education Association and the National Wildlife Federation, among others, to identify, recognize and support efforts to get children outside in the schools.

The session is for adults who are at least 18 years old. The camp offers opportunities for enjoyment of the mountain setting and growth in caring relationships. Included are hiking, group recreation, crafts, work projects, shared responsibilities, sharing of talents, music, etc. Christikon staff people reside in the cabins with the campers, and provide program leadership. Restrictions:
Because the camp is located o a mountain side and has many steps and barriers, people who use wheelchairs or whose mobility is severely limited would have a great deal of difficulty participating in the program. Campers should also be continent in toilet habits. Transportation:
Bus transportation is offered to and from camp on the first and last days from Billings, Laurel, Columbus and Big Timber. When:

Christikon lies along the Boulder River in the mountains just north of Yellowstone National Park. Costs:

The Montana Autism Education Project of the Office of Public Instruction is proud to present Rudy Simone in three presentations. Simone is the author of four books on Asperger syndrome, all best-sellers. Presentation on the following topics:

Childhood, Adolescent and Adult Aspergers - This talk covers the traits and hallmarks of early childhood ASCs (autism spectrum conditions, incl. but not limited to Asperger Syndrome), adolescence and adulthood with some attention paid to how the same AS traits may manifest or be perceived differently in females.

Relationships - This talk is tailored to suit the audience: whether they are mostly couples or simply individuals on the spectrum looking for relationship advice and assistance, professionals, friends and family members. Discusses the types of challenges spectrum people face throughout life when navigating friendships, dating, cohabitating, marriage, sex and children.

Aspergers on the Job - This topic includes education and career and so is relevant for virtually all ages. Discusses how sensory, social, cognitive and physical challenges and strengths impact our work choices and experience. Positively focuses on training the talent, making the right educational and career choices, and managing challenges. Where/When:

Eye-Gaze systems allow users to control a computer solely using their eyes - providing access to the internet, emails, and voice generation programs without the use of the upper extremities. In this all day educational conference attendees will learn to utilize eye-gaze systems. Please bring a laptop or a Tobii ATI ACC device. Lunch is not included.

This month's Grandparents (or relative) Raising Grandchildren Support Group meeting features a guest speaker from the Yellowstone Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children (CASA). CASA is a group of community volunteers who speak up for abused and neglected children in Yellowstone County. The CASA concept is based on the commitment that every child deserves a safe, permanent home. CASA volunteers are appointed by the courts to gather accurate and complete information about a child's circumstances, serve as an advocate, and make objective recommendations in the best interest of the child. This is the last spring meeting for 2013, there will be a picnic potluck, and grandchildren are welcome. If you are able to bring dish contact the Extension office to confirm.

SEPTA is having it's traditional back to school potluck at the dinosaur playground. Members will meet at the tables in front of the dinosaur playground and enjoy pizza (provided by SEPTA) and other dishes brought potluck style. This gathering gives mebers a chance to get back together for the new school year and meet new and old friends! Anyone who has any part or interest in SEPTA or the special needs community in general is welcome. SEPTA members please come ready to pay your dues for the year. Membership is still $10 for an individual, $15 for a couple and open to anyone with an interest in the special needs community.
