What: This year, the New Community Opportunities Project at ILRU is offering three webinars on the role of the CIL in facilitating and advancing successful youth transition. In the first event, "Youth Taking Charge of Their Own Transition: The Role of CILs," our presenter will provide participants with strategies on how CILs can use existing services they provide for all populations to support youth in transition.
Upon completion of this webinar, participants will have knowledge and resources which will enable them to:
Describe tools and strategies for self-assessment of student's needs, interests, and preferences.
Assist the student with developing an Independent Living Plan that enables the youth to describe and take charge of their transition process.
Through peer mentoring, support students to gain the independent living and advocacy skills necessary for them to achieve their goals.
Identify other resources available to youth and young adults that can support them in achieving their goals.

The purpose of Part 4: Bridging Skills is designed for the child to bridge into independence with their communication participation. The goal is to continue to expand the child's unique language productions while adult facilitators learn to reduce cuing in order for the child to experience increased degrees of independent success. Tips will be offered for activities with unfamiliar communication partners, literacy by writing and reflection on their own experiences, vocabulary skills of using correct tense and even slang, testing adequacy of tools, access, and troubleshooting so that the children will be better able to bridge to successful independent participation.

Most “standard” computer games get harder because they get faster, relying on the player’s reflexes and coordination keeping up. For example, in Tetris the blocks appear and drop faster and faster as your level increases Untimed games or time-independent games are those where you aren’t penalised if you play a game very slowly, have bad reflexes, or don’t posses the hand-eye coordination to time your movements accurately. Games like this are “turn-based” where any game actions only occur in response to the player’s actions, and don’t have any other timers or time-related limitations. One of my favourite time-independent games, Drop7, is another block-dropping game but each block only “falls” once you tell the game where to put it. Drop7 increases the difficulty by changing the mix of blocks which are dropped and by adding a layer of hidden (grey) blocks at the bottom of the screen after a number of moves Click here to read the full article

In fact, only 15 percent of working aged adults with ASD are currently employed (Cameto et al, 2003). Effective interventions are clearly needed to improve employment rates for this population. SEDL and partners on the National Advisory Panel of the Vocational Rehabilitation Service Models for Individuals with ASD project have implemented a rigorous process for identifying programs that help increase competitive, long-term employment for people with ASD. Wildwood Programs was designated as an effective program in the summer of 2011. Located in Latham, New York, this program serves people with ASD needing employment-related supports. Wildwood Programs works collaboratively with individuals, families and businesses to increase individuals' independence and integration into the community. The Senate finance committee agreed last week to include an amendment mandating insurance coverage for behavior treatments used with those who have autism.
