Board Releases Draft Refresh of Section 508 Standards and Section 255 Guidelines - 0 views

  • The Board is undertaking an update of its standards for electronic and information technology in the Federal sector covered by Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act.  As part of this effort, it is also updating guidelines for telecommunications products subject to Section 255 of the Telecommunications Act.  On March 17, the Board released for public comment a draft of the updated standards and guidelines.  The draft features a new structure and format that integrates the 508 standards and 255 guidelines into a single document referred to as the “Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Standards and Guidelines.”  Requirements have been reorganized according to functionality instead of product type since many devices now feature an array of capabilities and applications.  The released draft includes proposed revisions to various performance criteria and technical specifications that are designed to improve accessibility, add clarity to facilitate compliance, address market trends, and promote harmonization with other guidelines and standards.

  • There are many programs for kids with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). An expert panel recently created some best practice guidelines for these programs. The experts agreed that programs should cover all the core problem areas for kids with ASD, like language, social skills and behavior. They also suggested programs should start soon after diagnosis, involve family members and have an intensive weekly schedule.

  • Guidelines for genetic testing developed by professional societies may be more centered on the concerns of society members than the needs of the individuals and families that may undergo testing. This could be considered appropriate because it will be the healthcare provider who will assess whether to test; when to test; whom to test; and how to provide the right support, interpretation, and follow-up to the individual or family tested. Genetic testing requires guidelines because of the complexity of testing for the individual and his or her family. It also requires flexibility because context matters a great deal in genetics.

    The Games for the Visually Impaired is held each spring at the Montana School for the Deaf & Blind campus in Great Falls. Athletes from around the state compete in track and field, gymnastics, gym activities, swimming and bowling. This is a competitive event for blind and low vision students ranging in age from 3-21. The VI Games is an uplifting and confidence-boosting weekend for participants, and the MSDB staff provides lots of support for the kids. Personnel from Malmstrom Air Force Base assist athletes in their individual events. Volunteers are willing to swim and run with athletes. Any student with a visual impairment is welcome to participate in the event. When/Where:

Healthy Bodies, A Guide for Puberty for Children with Disabilities - 0 views

    Puberty is a time of change for children, and often a time of challenge for parents looking for the "right" way to talk about the upcoming changes. It can be even more of a challenge for parents of children with developmental or physical disabilities.
     
    The Vanderbilt Kennedy Center for Excellence in Disabilities has created two toolkits, one for boys, and one for girls, that provide factual information about puberty. Topics include encouraging good hygiene, appropriate behavior, and how to deal with the body changes. The toolkits also suggest ways to approach these important conversations, especially with children with disabilities.
     
    Each toolkit also includes a separate appendix that includes visual aids to help teach body parts, and social story images to help your child learn what appropriate behaviors are and where they are appropriate. Parents can decide what information and guidelines they share with their children.

    In 2010, the Board's Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPRM) for Section 508 proposed to incorporate the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (also known as WCAG 2.0) for evaluating the accessibility of electronic documents. WCAG 2.0 is published and maintained by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and is the internationally recognized standards for web accessibility. This session will provide examples of how the WCAG success criteria can be used to catch accessibility barriers in office documents, and also how the word processor has the capacity to include accessibility features in documents.     This review article describes the guidelines of ABA therapy and looks to see how ABA is being used in the schools. ABA can be used to help teachers study the classroom and predict the behavior of the child with autism in response to the classroom. People who practice ABA are guided by five documents that describe the ethics of ABA therapy. ABA methods have been used in education, health, and parenting. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA) in the United States requires that schools provide ABA therapy to students who need it.
