HELENA -- The Montana Office of Public Instruction announced on Monday that it has received three grants totaling more than $12.5 million to improve school climate and school safety and support the mental and emotional health of Montana students. The Office of Public Instruction was awarded a $3.75 million School Climate Transformation grant, an $8.5 million Project AWARE grant, and a $250,000 School Emergency Planning grant.

USTA Serves awards program grants twice a year to programs that support at-risk youth and people with disabilities through tennis and education programs designed to improve health, build character and strive for academic excellence.   To date USTA Serves has granted more than $11 million to fund 226 programs in 173 cities in 43 states, including more than $600,000 to adaptive tennis programs for people with special needs. The local nonprofit D.R.E.A.M. (Down syndrome Research, Education and Advocacy in Montana) is pleased to announce the start of a new grant program to help people with Down syndrome and their families. D.R.E.A.M. was the vision of a few parents with children diagnosed with Down syndrome recognizing the need for a local support system. The success of the 1st annual Bozeman Buddy Walk held in September allowed D.R.E.A.M. to grow from a group that organized monthly support meetings into a nonprofit charity. Thanks to the wonderful community support at the Buddy Walk we are offering grants to families and individuals struggling with medical, therapy and equipment expenses associated with Down syndrome. Grant money will be available three times per year with deadlines for applications due January 5, May 5 and November 5. A $7.7 million federal grant is being used to expand mental-health services in Montana and Wyoming where there is a severe shortage of psychiatrists and therapists.A Sacramento-based company, HealthLinkNow, received the three-year grant last year from the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services Innovation Awards, a federal program designed to underwrite promising new models of health care delivery.

We are now accepting applications for travel grants to send a limited number of parents of children with autism, individuals with autism, special education teachers, and other stakeholders to attend the International Meeting for Autism Research (IMFAR). This year the conference will be held in Toronto, Canada from May 17-19.

The National Institutes of Health is awarding nearly $100 million in grants — the most ever — to research the causes of autism and look for treatments. The funding is part of $5 billion that’s being awarded by the NIH to study autism, cancer and heart disease, among other conditions. The grants represent half of the NIH funding allotment from the federal economic stimulus package enacted earlier this year. Collectively, the grants are “the single largest boost to biomedical research in history,” President Barack Obama said at the NIH Wednesday.

On Dec. 1, the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR ), within the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services,  announced the details of a $4 million grant program supporting field initiated research and development projects to support the full inclusion and integration of individuals with disabilities in society, employment, independent living, family support, and economic and social self-sufficiency.

Shodair Children’s Hospital is one step closer to building housing for families to stay in while their children are in treatment. Jack Casey, hospital administrator, announced the receipt of a $225,000 grant from the Murdock Charitable Trust to help fund the Shodair Family House.

Since 1997, Kids Wish Network has been making dreams come true for hundreds of thousands of children all over the world. We started out with the single purpose of granting wishes to children suffering with life-threatening conditions. Since then, we created a unique range of programs designed to bring hope and joy to children facing life-altering circumstances who demonstrated needs above and beyond the extent of wishes.

We grant wishes to kids between ages 3 and 18 who are battling life-threatening conditions. Our Wish Kids can request just about anything for their wish, such as trips to theme parks, celebrity meet and greets, travel, or shopping sprees.

The Autism Speaks Baker Summer Camp Program selects eligible camps in the United States to identify qualified campers and offer scholarship funds for financially disadvantaged children with Autism Spectrum Disorder to attend a summer camp. Note: Individuals may not apply for the program. If you are an individual interested in obtaining a scholarship for your child, please encourage your local camp to apply for a scholarship fund.

The U.S. Department of Education today announced the award of more than $28.8 million in grants to 42 states to cover a portion of the fees charged to low-income students for taking advanced placement (AP) tests.

Four years ago the Helena School District received a $5.3 million grant for the Safe Schools Healthy Student Initiative. Since the grant is in its last year, Youth Connections in Helena wants to get the word out to the community about all the programs the grant has allowed them to establish.

SALT LAKE CITY — Not much is known about how children with autism fare as they become adults, including their employment opportunities, how they do socially and what kinds of support services they need. But with the resources received from a new three-year, $450,000 grant from autism activists Autism Speaks, University of Utah researchers hope to be able to shed more light on the issue through a new project and study.
