Punitive and reactive strategies are often the response of choice, in spite of the frequent negative side effects and drawbacks of such approaches. We will take a look at another approach to classroom management of oppositional and defiant students. A montana licensed psychologist in private practice in Billings, Dr. House was a school psychologist in Bozeman for a dozen years before returning to graduate school in Oregon to earn a Masters and Doctorate in Clinical Psychology. He practiced a couple of years in a private psychology clinic and a year in a psychiatric hospital for children and adolescents, and then shifted to a psychiatric residential treatment facility, where he filled several professional roles during his twenty one years of service, resigning from there this past summer to pursue his private practice.   • Insurance premiums (monthly payments) would increase slightly for everyone if insurance companies pay for autism-related services and therapy. The authors calculated how many people have been getting autism-related therapy, and how much those therapies cost. Then they figured out how much it would cost private insurance companies to pay for it. They estimated that the monthly payments for all of the people insured by private companies would go up about 0.2-2%.

    The Montana Children and Nature Initiative (MCNI) is a state-wide collaboration of public and private partners working to promote healthy kids and families and build future leaders and stewards by connecting kids with nature, supporting place-based education and getting families outside. MCNI is working with Montana Office of Public Instruction, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, Montana Environmental Education Association and the National Wildlife Federation, among others, to identify, recognize and support efforts to get children outside in the schools.

    The Jargon Free Lecture is a half-day training program using a "jargon free" explanation of the Institute for Applied Behavior Analysis (IABA) multi-element model and the use of positive practices in support of individuals with challenging and complex behavioral needs.   • Seven-year-old Alex Rowe, who has a rare bleeding disorder, soon will have private health insurance again.  He is among more than 5 million Americans under the age of 19 with a pre-existing medical condition who cannot be denied coverage by insurance companies beginning as early as September under a key provision of the health care reform law. Covering consumers with pre-existing health problems has long been a point of contention and figured prominently in the national health reform debate.

    The United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) has released its annual Case for Inclusion that benchmarks states' actual performance in improving lives for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Among the findings, there remain 169 large institutions (more than 16 beds) housing 36,175 Americans. This is a decline of four institutions from the previous year, as well as 1,536 fewer people living in them. However, nine states (down from 11) continue to report more than 2,000 residents living in large public or private institutions - California, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania & Texas. Nine states - Alaska, Hawaii, Maine, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Vermont and West Virginia, and the District of Columbia - have no large state institutions.

  • The Achieving a Better Life Experience Act (ABLE) of 2011 (S. 1872/H.R. 3423) was introduced on November 15 in the 112th Congress (2011-2012 Congressional cycle). The bill is being led by a bipartisan, bicameral set of Congressional champions, including Senator Robert Casey, Jr., (D-PA), Senator Richard Burr (R-NC), Congressman Ander Crenshaw (R-FL), Congressman Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), and Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA). The ABLE Act will give individuals with disabilities and their families the ability to save for their child's future just like every other American family, and help people with disabilities live full, productive lives in their communities without losing benefits provided through private insurances, the Medicaid program, the supplemental security income program, the beneficiary’s employment, and other sources. The account could fund a variety of essential expenses for individuals, including medical and dental care, education, community based supports, employment training, assistive technology, housing, and transportation.

These are not necessarily free camps, or camps for financially needy children and families. But, some of these camps offer financial aid, so contact the individual camp for details. If you're looking for programs that provide general financial aid for camping or other activities, then go to the Diagnosis-Based Assistance area of NeedyMeds and search by the specific diagnosis. The programs listed in this database include camps for children with one specific diagnosis, whole categories of diagnoses (such as all types of cancers) or broader chronic illnesses. Many of these camps are funded by either private or government organizations. Some camps take children from anywhere in the U.S., while others are limited to people in specific states. Most have some type of eligibility requirements, usually financial ones.

  • "Do I have a right to observe the class before agreeing (or not agreeing) to a placement for my child? The special ed director said I cannot observe the class because of confidentiality issues with the other children." Pete says: I have represented kids with disabilities since 1978. In all these years, I have never had an instance where a school denied a parent, or the parent's private sector expert, the opportunity to observe a potential placement. The school board attorneys with whom I have worked over the years have always permitted observations by parents and the parent's outside experts.   When a school administrator takes this position, it creates an appearance of two things (both bad): (1) that the program is clearly not appropriate and the parent will quickly discover this, and (2) that the school is attempting to keep important information from parents. I think many Hearing Officers and Administrative Law Judges would view a refusal to allow an observation as grounds to find that the proposed placement was not appropriate.

These private schools of education, associated with charter schools and other reform efforts, are issuing master's degrees and promoting a clinical model of teacher education in which most learning occurs in the same place where teachers do their jobs—a classroom full of kids—rather than through traditional college coursework.
