For people with mental health and substance use disorders, access to and inclusion in higher education is a central issue in achieving social inclusion. Learning Objectives: To learn how efforts within the legal system are working to reduce discrimination and ensure that necessary accommodations as provided by the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act are available to all who need them. These private schools of education, associated with charter schools and other reform efforts, are issuing master's degrees and promoting a clinical model of teacher education in which most learning occurs in the same place where teachers do their jobs—a classroom full of kids—rather than through traditional college coursework.

Virtual Speech Therapy Offers Solution to SLP Shortage | District Administration Magazine - 0 views

  • There is a shortage across the nation of speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in schools, which has caused some districts to choose virtual speech therapy, which, according to current research from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), a professional association for SLPs, can be as effective as traditional speech therapy. One reason for the shortage, says Deborah Dixon, director of school services at ASHA, is that, although there are an adequate number of students graduating with a bachelor’s degree in the field, a master’s degree is required to be an SLP, and there are not many openings in graduate schools. Virtual speech therapy offers a solution for students with mild to moderate impairment since the flexible hours are appealing for those who want to work part-time and for retired SLPs.

The Transitions Project will be implemented on the Flathead Reservation in Montana. The preschool component will implement a three and four year old, culturally appropriate active learning High/Scope curriculum program to prepare them for successful entry into kindergarten. This project collaborates with a Bureau funded tribal school - Two Eagle River School, where the Transitions Secondary component will serve high school students to provide an intensive one-on-one college preparatory coaching program.   • It's unusual for people with autism to go to college, but Chris Fitzmaurice has started graduate school at UNCC. He's specializing in clinical exercise physiology. “I don't look at (autism) as a disability,” he said. If it means he has to work harder, he figures it only makes him stronger.
  • Last month, the 23-year-old started graduate school at UNC Charlotte, where he's pursuing a degree in clinical exercise physiology. The goal is to help others heal through physical activity.

  • The American Bar Association's Commission on Mental and Physical Disability Law established the national Mentor Program for: law students with disabilities prospective law students with disabilities, and recent law school graduates with disabilities The Program’s purpose is to give members of these groups the opportunity to learn from an experienced attorney. In a recent study conducted for the ABA, those immediately out of law school cited having a mentor as an important driving factor of satisfaction with their career. Career satisfaction, however, is just one benefit of having a mentor-mentee relationship. Practitioners, students, and academics have all praised the benefits of a mentor program for those with disabilities, namely the availability of advice, guidance, and support.

  • Through the Looking Glass and its National Center for Parents with Disabilities and their Families are pleased to announce new scholarships specifically for high school seniors and college students who have parents with disabilities. A total of ten $1000 scholarships will be given out Fall 2010. These scholarships are part of Through the Looking Glass' National Center for Parents with Disabilities and their Families. Please note that the 2010 awards have different application procedures than previous years.There are two separate scholarship awards, and each has separate eligibility requirements: High School Seniors - To be eligible, a student must be a high school graduate (or graduating senior) by Summer 2010, planning to attend a two-year or four-year college in Fall 2010 in pursuit of an AA, BA or BS degree, and have at least one parent with a disability. A thoughtful and sensitive review of the Adam Lanza Case - 0 views

    From the office of the child advocate from the state of Connecticut, a very thoughtful, thorough review of this young man's life and death. http://www.ct.gov/oca/lib/oca/sandyhook11212014.pdf The group points out many of the failures along the way, including reluctance of the school system to accurately classify him in the autism spectrum when he was very young, and later not identifying and addressing his social and emotional deficits. They also highlight the lack of coordination between school, health and mental health providers, which allowed him to fall through the cracks in the system. Also it clearly shows the inappropriate use of homebound school as a means to avoid addressing problems, and the lack of transition from child to adult services and the problems caused when the school system graduated him early from high school, and no longer offered services. By his final year he was clearly isolated in his room, anorectic (6 feet tall and 112 lbs.), and his only forays outside of home were to spend hours dancing on the Dance Dance Revolution game at a local theatre, so he was not hidden away, many people saw his physical and behavioral deterioration on display in a public place. This may be a helpful teaching tool, not only as a case study that documents how untreated developmental disorder can evolve into severe psychopathology, but also as a lesson in the need to coordinate school, health and mental health services, and the potential risks when it is not done.

  • A new survey tool that school districts and parent-teacher organizations can use to measure the quality of parent-school relationships has been created by the Harvard Graduate School of Education and released by SurveyMonkey, a Palo Alto, Calif., company, for widespread use by schools, districts, and parent groups. The 71-item "question bank" covers seven areas of family engagement—from how much help students receive at home to how confident parents are in supporting their child's schooling. Districts can adapt the survey to suit their individual needs, and parents responding to it can do so online or on paper.

  • When the "2013 Miss America Competition" airs on ABC this Saturday, Miss Montana Alexis Wineman will be the first autistic competitor in the pageant's history.Wineman was diagnosed with pervasive developmental disorder and borderline Asperger's syndrome at age 11. She told Time in an interview that her foray into the world of beauty pageants started as a "last-minute way to pay for college." "Around high school graduation, I realized I was the fourth child in my family to go to college, and there was no money left for me," she said. "I asked my mom about different ways to get scholarships, and she mentioned the Miss Montana competition, thinking I’d never go for it. But I did, and I won."

Self-Advocacy, Mentors Key For College Students With Disabilities - Disability Scoop - 0 views

  • College remains a hurdle for many with disabilities. Now a new study offers insight on what separates individuals with special needs who are ultimately successful in higher education from those who are not. In interviews with recent graduates with disabilities, researchers found that students who earned degrees shared the ability to self-advocate and persevere. They also had good insight into their abilities and limitations and often cited a strong relationship with at least one faculty or staff member on campus.
