What:
EQUIP is a professionally facilitated, psycho-educationally-based group. Each month, we will concentrate on a specific topic relevant to adoption and have time for both teaching and discussion. This group is designed to support those on the adoption journey who would like information and the camaraderie of other adoptive families.

A frequent equipment adaptation provided to assist agricultural workers with lower-limb disabilities is the modification of foot operated controls to be controllable by hand. Given the wide range of user needs and equipment types, there are many different designs for such modifications. While a valuable tool, hand controls also have potential health risks, not only for the primary user, potentially increasing the extent of their impairment, but also for causing injuries to secondary users of modified equipment.

eSpecialNeeds is a provider of adaptive therapy products including special needs strollers, adaptive toys, clothing, furniture, and other adaptive equipment / learning tools.

It is important that employers understand new technologies, accommodation strategies and best practices to assist and support employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities. Technology Act States and ADA Regional Centers have valuable free services to assist employers and employees with job accommodations. Each individual employee accommodation solution requires research and time. Presenters Andy Winnegar with the Southwest ADA Center, David Altman and Desirae Vallier with the Assistive Technology Partnership in Nebraska will discuss how Assistive Technology (AT) demonstrations, equipment loans, ADA support and technical assistance from the ADA Network may enhance the interactive accommodation process. What:
Healthy People 2020 contains almost 600 objectives for improving the health of all Americans, and 100 of those objectives relate to children and youth with special healthcare needs (CYSHCN). To highlight some of these objectives and envision how the objectives might influence CYSHCN as they mature into adults, Genetic Alliance and Family Voices collaborated with the Division of Services for Children with Special Health Needs in the Health Resources and Services Administration's Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) - which last year released Envision 2020, its strategic plan - to develop a family and consumer perspective on the national health promotion agenda and how it relates to CYSHCN and their families. By focusing on a small portion of the many community and organizational accomplishments related to children and youth with special healthcare needs (CYSHCN) and systems of care, we hope to generate discussions of the gaps that remain, as well as equip families and providers to better advocate and care for CYSHCN and their families. This webinar will present Envision 2020 as well as the Consumer Perspective document and demonstrate how Healthy People 2020 objectives can influence and provide direction for improving systems and services for individuals with special healthcare needs.

What:
The Montana Regional Education Service Area III (MRESA3) is offering an opportunity for professional development on the new revisions for Gifted and Talented in Montana. This workshop is designed to assist schools and districts to have the necessary components for their Gifted and Talented Program Plan to submit to OPI. The focus of this workshop is to equip the participant with strategies necessary to construct a gifted program that fits their district and population of students. Participants will be presented with the OPI framework for Gifted Education Programs and a Gifted Program Planning Template. Emphasis will be placed on identification of gifted and twice exceptional children as well as characteristics of sound curriculum for gifted students. Several teaching strategies that enable the teacher to differentiate the core curriculum to meet the needs of not only the gifted student but all students in the classroom will be presented. Participants will come away with the ability to complete a comprehensive plan for their district and/or develop a differentiated curriculum unit or lesson.

What:
NICHD is recruiting volunteers for the national Safe to Sleep Champions Initiative, which engages physicians and other health care professionals, parents, grandparents and other family members, caregivers, and community stakeholders to serve as spokespersons for the Safe to Sleep campaign. The Safe to Sleep campaign not only addresses ways to reduce the risk of SIDS, but also ways to reduce the risk of other sleep-related causes of infant death, such as suffocation or strangulation. The goal of the Safe to Sleep Champions Initiative is to share the campaign messages about safe infant sleep practices through the use of media and community outreach efforts. The NICHD will host training webinars to equip participants with the information to serve as Champions in their local communities. To volunteer as a Safe to Sleep Champion, you must participate in one of the webinars.

This group is designed for parents who are dealing with specific challenges usually encountered once their adoptees are settled in (~ 1 year or more into the adoption), for parents with challenging children and interested others. CONNECT (formerly Together in Parenting) is a process-based support group lead by a licensed therapist that gives parents a venue in which to form an emotional connection with other parents experiencing similar issues with their children. Each month, we address concerns of parents who are present via peer support and therapeutic suggestions. Parents who are experiencing challenging times with their children find the support of other parents who have been on the adoption and parenting journey for some time to be invaluable.Therapeutic suggestions are offered when appropriate and helpful. For parents who need the support of other families who are at the beginning of the adoption journey and who would like information and the camaraderie of other families at the same early stage in the process, we offer the EQUIP support group. This session will explore free web-based tools that support the basic constructs of Universal Design for Learning. Strategies for engaging learners to write and express their knowledge creatively using these tools will be highlighted throughout the session. Participants will walk away with ideas that they can put to use right away without the need for purchasing new equipment or software.

Participants will explore a range of free web-based tools, such as PhotoPeach, GingerSoft, Animoto, and Read/Write/Think that can be used to support writing for students with diverse needs. They will learn how utilizing multimedia applications along with spelling and grammar supports can engage reluctant writers and promote the type of written language skills required in most standards based educational settings. Participants will learn how to maximize the use of tools that are free or low cost in these cost cutting times and how to integrate them with tools that they may already have. When:

Adaptive ball game - all equipment provided. We will have mitts of all sizes as well as soft and hard bats, softballs, wiffle balls and an auditory ball. Everyone hits, rounds the bases and scores. Bring snacks if you like, otherwise just bring yourself!

(If there is a "stay indoors" health advisory due to thick smoke, the game will be postponed.)

What:
It is well known among secondary teachers that an increasing number of students are ill equipped to read and comprehend the textbooks designed for proficient secondary readers.  Reading instruction is a responsibility shared by all teachers, regardless of level or content. Educators who accept this idea are already a step ahead - but for secondary teachers who may have never had the opportunity to learn how to teach basic reading strategies, the task is daunting.  This session will examine Before, During, and After reading strategies that can be applied in all content area classrooms and support increased comprehension of the text. When all subject area teachers have students use common strategies, it leads to greater independence, more responsibility in the learning, and increased student outcomes for all students.
