Eleanore's Project: Sponsor a Wheelchair, Sponsor a Child Campaign - 1 views

  • We are having a Sponsor a Wheelchair, Sponsor a Child campaign.  For March 2010, Eleanore’s Project has 181 requests for wheelchairs in Peru. We would like to fulfill all of them...and we can’t do it alone. We are asking supporters of Eleanore's Project to help us by sponsoring a wheelchair. A $300 wheelchair sponsorship can do a lot! You will receive a photo of the child and wheelchair you sponsored. A team of professional therapists will customize each wheelchair to fit each child and provide training to families. A child will be able to leave home; sit at a table with family and friends; live with greater independence; enjoy better health, respect and dignity; and even go to school.

Underwater Wheelchair Inspires Disability Awareness - 0 views

  • Artist Sue Austin has been wheelchair-bound since 1996. Instead of allowing her circumstances to hinder her art, she uses it as a vehicle — so to speak. Austin has created, with the support of diving experts, an underwater wheelchair outfitted with a propeller and fins that allow her to steer. With it, she gracefully hovers through the deep ocean, mingling with fish and flying past coral reefs. The wheelchair is equipped with a clear fin, making the artificial device seem slightly less out of place in the serene ocean.

Tongue piercing lets paralysed drive wheelchairs - Story - World - 3 News - 0 views

  • An experimental device is letting paralysed people drive wheelchairs simply by flicking their tongue in the right direction. Key to this wireless system: Users get their tongue pierced with a magnetic stud that resembles jewellery and acts like a joystick, in hopes of offering them more mobility and independence. Researchers reported Wednesday that 11 people paralysed from the neck down rapidly learned to use the tongue device to pilot their wheelchairs through an obstacle course full of twists and turns, and to operate a computer, too.

  • Zipping along in his wheelchair, Scott Dorfman often must rely on others to open doors for him. But a new device developed by a group of high school students is changing that. The tool called the Operational Portable Entry Device, or O.P.EN., has a mechanical arm with a clamp at one end. It is designed for a wheelchair user like Dorfman, 28, who has cerebral palsy, to open doors without having to lean out of the chair. The device is adjustable and works on a variety of door handles.

Fishing from a wheelchair - 0 views

  • From his home on the Neal Ranch, 14 miles west of Philipsburg, David Riggs is a short off-road drive from a favorite fishing spot on Rock Creek. The bank is flat. The trout are plentiful. Moose, deer and bighorns occasional wander across the secluded backdrop. Riggs, 43, came to realize the picturesque potential for anglers — in wheelchairs. He recently installed a handicap access gate that opens to 60 feet of creek frontage about a mile west of the Kyle G. Bohrnsen Memorial Bridge.

Unbounded brilliance: Augustana student has defied disability, despair to dazzle | argu... - 0 views

  • This mass of flesh in the wheelchair - obese, constricted, imperfect - is Chris Johnson's body. It is, he says, "his monster." It's a cruel joke of Mother Nature, explained in words such as "cerebral palsy" and delivered in humorless punch lines that, instead of laughter, can leave him lonely, melancholy and despairing.Chris Johnson knows them all. But know this about Johnson - the brain damage that he experienced at birth 30 years ago relegated his body to a wheelchair but did not limit the boundaries of his mind.As proof, he will roll across the stage May 22 at Augustana College's commencement ceremony, a double major in French and English with a 3.95 grade-point average and a story of inspiration.

Planners for the new stadium known as Target Field, say they intentionally went above and beyond the accessibility requirements mandated by law. For example, all of the entrances are wheelchair accessible even though laws only require a portion to be.
