Stereotypes of People in Poverty - 10 views

  •
This is basicly breaking the stereotypes that some people think of others who are in poverty. I really amazed me how common poverty is. I used to think it was made-up.

I thought this website was improtant because it showspeople about what some one living in poverty actually looks like. They could have a job. You might see them everyday and not know what they are living like. We know that the only way to break stereotypes is to educate. This article does just that
  •
Ithought it was sad how it stated that poor people have usaully have jobs but they don't pay enough to suport them. so they work more hours than what my parents work.
  •
Some of this stuff is good to know. Some good facts about people in poverty.
  •
I love how this site breaks so many stereotypes of people in poverty. When you general think about poverty, you think of "Hobo's" or a dingy, dirty white guy with fingerless gloves and a sign. This hows that not all poor people are like that, only a tiny percentage are.
  •
i think this article was pretty interesting...it really did break a lot of stereotypes like how people in poverty don't have jobs-a lot of them actually do. they just don't pay enough.

I thought this website was interesting because it put a label on "developed" or "developing" countries when really all countries how some sort of poverty or suffering in their economy.
  •
This has a lot of facts about poverty around the world. Very sight exploding
  •
This article is very insightful, becauswe not only is it telling you about poverty in the U.S., but in other countries! Showing you the wages, perctentages, and what makes a country "developed," or "developing.

Factors of Poverty; The Big Five - 3 views

  •
This article is about what causes poverty. I like how it goes into the social and cultural details that come with poverty. It talks about mental aspects of poverty, not just physical.
  • ...2 more comments...
  •
You are right! I really like how it had many aspects to how poverty effects people. I thought it was a very interesting article.
  •
This article is full of information about how poverty starts and keeps on growing with no help of stopping it. There are many factors and causes that are explained on how families or individuals can't pull themselves out of poverty. I think that when they were explaining the causes of disease, then said that the knowledge of a cause won't solve it, but knowing the factors that lead it it will help us to better understand the ways to fix it. I think that this is very true and should be aware to all.
  •
Very in depth. I love the detail they put into it. It talks about all of it instead of just one part of it.
  •
Factors do not cause problems, but merely contribute to make the matter worse. This article speaks of the five major factors of poverty: Disease, Ignorance, Apathy, Dishonesty, and Dependency. The article speaks on each matter in turn, and explains each topic. I found this article quite intriguing, and very truthful. It definently deserves a read-through.

Poverty is poison - 9 views

  •
It's mostly about the effect poverty has on people (like children) throughout their life. "many children growing up in very poor families with low social status experience unhealthy levels of stress hormones, which impair their neural development."
  • ...4 more comments...
  •
Its about when young kids are born into a family thats poor and it affects the stress hormones and its also about paul krugman talking about the change in poverty, through out the years.
  •
I feel horrible for kids growing up in poverty. It's not their fault what family they are born into, but they still have to deal with it. This article tells about how growing up in poverty poisions your mind. You are an outcast, and are looked down upon. It messes with your homones and can damage your views of yourself and others. Because of this, a lot of kids are never able to get out of living in poverty, continuing the awful cycle.
  •
I find it so sad that poverty is a cycle like that. Poverty stops you from being able to et good jobs and make enough money to get out of poverty.
  •
I was suprised to hear that "American children born to parents in the bottom fourth of the income distribution have almost a 50 percent chance of staying there"
  •
I thought the quote "poverty in early childhood poisons the brain," was really interesting. If you are in poverty as a child you feel ashamed and never are brought out of it, then making your children live it in their lives too. I thought that quote was very strong.
  •
it makes me extermly upset to know that a childs brain devlopment can be damaged by their finachal situation. its just not right.

This website gives a nice summary about poverty and some stats. It also gives some other info about poverty. I like this because the paragraphs are short and they give good info on poverty.
  •
I thought that it was really sad when they said that one of the reasons people are in poverty is because they are disabled mentally or physically. Another reason that people are in poverty is because they have little to no education which is one reason they can't get a job. I thought that these were reasons that we take for granite everyday. We complain about going to school, but i bet most people in poverty wish they were where we are now.

Consequences of poverty - 3 views

  •
This article is about the effcts poverty has on children. It gives the consequences poverty sometimes causes for children living in it. Children living in poverty are more likely to have behavior problems, as well as emotional and physical problems. I felt upset reading about the consequences that children living in poverty had to deal with because it wasn't their fault they were poor.

This article is about some of the long term effects that poverty can cause for children in poor families. I think that it is really sad that a child's potential can be limited so much by not having enough money.
  •
I really like how this article goes into the mental aspects of children who live in poverty. It's interesting and sad to learn how many behavioral problems children can have when they grow up not having money.
  •
I think its sad how it talks about how children are limited in their futures because they were born into poverty. I think its good that it shows how there is poverty even in the US. A child could have amazing potential and cant get anywhere because they are in poverty.
  •
I like how it gives the numbers. It helps me to have a better view. For example, I knew that poorer people are more likely to do worse in school, I just didn't know how much. Twice as much as a nonpoor person.

NCCP Child Poverty - 1 views

  •
Gives percantage of children living in poverty and the effects of poverty on children. It also includes what the federal poverty line is. I was shocked by how many kids are living in poverty and how strongly it affects almost all aspects of their lives.
  •
I thought it was really interesting when they said that the children living in poverty that go to school can't learn because they have problems at home that keep them from reaching their potential in school. This reminded my about maslows heirarchy and how if they don't have a strong base(home) everything else will fall apart.

Statistics about the Homeless - 1 views

  •
this article talks about who are homeless and the percents of each homeless group. IT was really touching because it showed that everyone is affected. It really made me feel sad when I saw that 36% of homeless people are families
  •
it makes us relize how we shouldnt take things for granted, and just should be thankful for what we have, becuase some people dont even get the love and support we get. they just have nothing. ):
  •
I found this article interesting becasue it gives statistics about peopl who are homless, like 28% don't have enough to eat, compared to the 12% of adults who are hungry nut have homes." and "22% have been physically assulted". It gave me a different perspective about people who are homeless.

Causes of Poverty - 9 views

This article is mainly about how poverty is caused and why
  •
This site will tell about facts and causes of poverty. It really amazed me how most of humanity lives on just a few dollars a day.
  •
This article contains the causes of poverty as well as possible solutions. This article aslo has many other arrticles within it about poverty. I was amazed at some of the statistics this article gave but also hopeful that the problem is being addressed and solutions are being thought of.
  •
This website Starts with some poverty facts like that 1 out of 2 children live in poverty. Then it continues with an article. Almost Half the world lives on 2.50 a day. Less than one per cent of what the world spent every year on weapons was needed to put every child into school by the year 2000 and yet it didn't happen. It also has some solutions to poverty.
  •
This article had several subsections about things like major causes and poverty around the world. It had a lot of statistics about poverty that I didn't know before like the fact that less than 1% of what the world spends on military wepons was needed to put every child in schools by 2000 but id didn't happen, or that 1 out of 2 children live in poverty around the world. It was really sad.
  •
Almost half of the people in the world live on $2.50 or less per day. 1 billion children are in poverty. Growing countries with growing economies put financial stress on people in poverty because things cost a lot of money to provide the government with money. I thought this was interesting learning about how poverty affects the world and how not much is being done for people in poverty.
  •
Sometimes it isn't your fault for being in poverty. You may be born in poverty, and you may have not have a lot of money to begin with. But some people have addictions to drugs, alcohol, gambling etc.
  •
This site gives reasons for poverty as well as data. This site is a compilation of a lot of articles on poverty through 2000.
  •
this article has a lot of facts and statistics about poverty. It was really shocking to see that 80% of the world lives on less than $10 a day. and that Less than 1%of what the world spent every year on weapons was needed to put every child into school by the year 2000.
  •
Wow, my gosh. I feel so bad for those people that can barely even stay alive because they can't afford food... I really can't imagine what it's like to feel like that D:
  •
Many people are confused why people are getting into poverty. Here is some good explainations. This really helped me understand more.
  •
i cant imagine that happeneding to me or let alone anybody else!!! i want to buy food for all people in poverty now!
  •
This gives you facts of poverty around the world. 22,000 children die around the world thats sad for so many people kides because the cause the poverty. We need to stop this.
  •
The article gives many facts about the world wide issue, poverty. Almost half the world - over 3 billion people - live on less than $2.50 a day. Ths also gives graphs and stats about the percent of people in the world at different poverty levels. It gives many other graphs and stats too but i found this one the most interesting.
  •
wow 2.50 dollars? dang thats horrible. thats like lunch for us.. its pretty depressing that these people live like this. this topic just makes me really depressed..
  •
This article talks about what causes poverty.
  •
    no really? sorry but really
  •
This is about what the causes of poverty are and what people going through poverty have to live with every day. I was surprised that over 3 billion people have to live off of less that $3 a day considering how much things cost here. A school lunch for us is around there so that is like just eating one meal every day.
  •
I think that the charts and graphs on this website were interesting. It's shocking that over 3 BILLION people around the world are living off of less than $3 a day.
  •
that is sooooooo big and i agree with kayla! i cant belive that people are living off of 3$ a day! i could never do that! rhat is less than what we pay for lunch!
  •
this artical shows the percent of people in the world at different poverty levels each year
  •
Wow...this article really grabs you with the first few facts. I find it heartbreaking that 1 in 2 children, over 1 billion in all, live in poverty. When one is born into poverty, it's hard to leave it. These 1 billion children may never know what it's like to not be hungry.

..:: Causes of Poverty ::.. - 10 views

This article is about the causes of poverty. Poverty is caused by overpopulation, unequal distribution of resources, costs of living, inadequate education, and unemployment. I was upset by the some of the causes of poverty, but hopeful too, because some of the causes could be changed in order to end poverty.

this website talks about the many different factors that can play in peoples lives that will lead to them being in poverty
  •
i think poverty will eventually be bred out wether from the most poor starting to die out and it will make it easier to help the smaller less scattered groups or somebody acually finds a decent way to help them all
  •
This article gives some basic causes of poverty and information on each of them. This article made me realize that it may not be the people's fault that they are struggling, but their environment plays a big part in it too.
  •
This article is about the suspected reasons for poverty. It provides detailed explanations for each cause of poverty; Overpopulation, Global Distribution of Resources, Costs of Living, Inadequate Education and Employment, Enviromental Degradation, and others. Reading this article, I felt guilty because of the standars of living in the U.S. I felt that in America, we worry about which new car, or designer clothing to buy, when people in developing countries worry about having enough in their gardens to feed their families. Our standards of living seem so silly compared to the standards in poverty stricken countries.
  •
I didn't know poverty was caused by so many things. This site is really informational too.
  •
Yes, their are many causes of poverty, but more importantly the efects, like malnutrition, homelessnes, and much, much more! It's crazy!
  •
I think that poverty in some places can be like a cycle, once someone gets into poverty, it is almost impossible to get out.
  •
I agree Jake. I think that poverty is a never ending cycle, After reeading alot of these articles, I think the best solution would be to educate people so they can get their own jobs and make an income to end poverty.
  •
i disagree with jake and tara. I think that poverty is not a never ending cycle, because if everyone heard about these people and we convinced them to donate 10-100$ every month or so, then we can end poverty!. Here is website where you can donate money: http://donate.worldvision.org/OA_HTML/xxwv2ibeCCtpSctDspRte.jsp?go=section&section=10324&xxwvNavItemId=0&
  •
This article is extremly useful to me since i'm thinking about doing my report thing on causes. but its amazing how many causes there are and what they are.
  •
I think that the most prominent reasons for poverty are inadequate education and pverpopulation. This makes more sense to why the US has a lot of poverty.

This article is about the countries that are effected most by poverty and gives plenty of solutions to poverty. One example of a solution is to improve the training and equipment of agricultural farmers to increase crop yields and conserve the environment.
  •
This shows the solutions to world poverty and it shows the amount of poverty all over the world.
  •
This article explains the different "Types" of poverty, like in the U.S compared to africa. It also gives solutions to abolish this mess.

I like that site 'cause it tells you how poverty can be solved. oh, and I like the graphs because they give you an idea of where poverty is in the world if you don't know.. c:

i think that this website has some good information but people arent commenting correcy bout it (this doesot as a comment, to the teachers)

if i could, i would totally go to africa and give everysingle child something to help them through the hard times. Just a little teddy bear will do the trick, just to have something to hold and love. that makes them feel happy inside. This artical is about how africa is such a poor country and they need halp and fast. children are getting water from streams that other people have to use the restroom in and take showers with. its so sad. D: my heart aches for them.

I wonder how accrate that survey was because I don't think people would tell the truth about how they are living. Some people are too proud. I didn't know that the level of kids living in poverty was so high before the economy got this bad!
  •
I think it's really sad that so many children are homeless. When you think of homelessness, adults usally come to mind. It is scary and alarming how many children and teens are homeless, especially if you put yourself in their shoes. I doubt I would survive.
  •
If i was one of those kids i would go mad out of my mind. Think of the kids who are 9 and younger live out side don't have food every day. How would you fill?
  •
That just feels so unfair that kids are just born into this kinda thing. It's pretty sad that they can't get the right education to be successful in their lives because they were born poor :(((((

More people die as a result of extreme poverty than of any other cause. I wanna know what from poverty, from not being able to buy food or is it from not being able to go to a doctor when they are sick? Is it both? I wanna know what exactly is it. I was hurt to find out the 10 million kids in developing countiers die before the age of 5. Its painful to hear about thoose things and now at this moment i am woundering what is for lunch and i had breakfast this morning and that i am already 13 and have had a nice life so far but some kids wont even get to be my age.
  •
Thia gives a lot of facts about poverty, that you would not think about, i can't believe that their are 1.37 billion people living on less than 1.25 a day
  •
I can not believe how sad some of this facts are. I did not know that 1/3 of deaths are accounted for by poverty (hunger, homlessness) That was outragous. I really liked how quick and easy the facts were, so you learned lots in a short amount of time.
  •
These statistics account for one third of all human deaths. More people die as a result of extreme poverty than of any other cause. This article says that !8 million people die every year because of poverty and hunger. That is only 1/3 of people accounted for. There is still 2/3 that people dont evenknow about.18 million is a lot of people. But 18 million is only the number of people recorded who died. There are millions of others dieing every year more than recorded. That was a major shock to me. I dont understand how this many people alone struggle with hunger. They could go days without food in their bodys. That just amazes me.
  •
Its so so sad to see all of the people effected by poverty, and how many people die from it
