More follow-up on useful links to help a nonprofit organization use social media. A lot of the time, for any agency, posting event invitations is the best bet in getting a response from "fans" of your organization

One very revealing panel (in a web-streamed Advocacy Live event in March) included Eric Jones, the top technology person for Iowa Senator Tom Harkin, who provided tips and advice about ways that online organizers might boost their campaigns' impact on members of Congress and their staffers. Heads up on a local technology event, February 16th, at 5:30pm at Wealthy Street Theater. Keith Brophy will be discussing new tech trends for 2011 that will effect the way we do business, connect with one another, and what we can look forward to in the future. I've heard of these presentations before, and that they are both entertaining and interesting. If I didn't have night classes, I'd probably be going!

Wikipedia turns ten years old this month. Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia that is open to anyone with an internet connection to write on any topic that they see fit. IT is more of a starting place for research on things because of its open user format, but those dedicated to Wikipedia usually come in and remove any nonsense that a person, place, or event may accumulate. The founders of Wikipedia could have easily made a fortune, but in turn decided to make Wikipedia a non-profit, charitable business.

An increase in demand for EVENTjournal.com (an online journal that helps non profits put together fundraising EVENTs) has forced its expansion.

This article details results of a fundraising survey for 2010. The biggest finding is that online contributions are rising in 2010. This makes the process more important. It is unclear if the trend is strictly temporary. The increased awareness of events in conjunction with social media appears to be generating more donations. More data is needed to make a definitive assessment than this article provides.

I know they've held similar events in Lansing and Ann Arbor (not sure about Grand Rapids). I've heard mixed longer term results from the work: some of it sticks, some doesn't. Would be interesting to do a "one-year later" follow up on these.

This article is increasingly helpful for NPO's who are burdened by e mail. There are several strategies outlined which seek to make e mail a more organized, and, thus effective, tool.

With so many organizations out there competing for attention and money, having a solid social media strategy is going to be paramount to success in the future. This Webinar looks pretty interesting, and should help to sort out some of those issues for NPOs of any size. I would be really interested to hear Brooke McMillan talk about managing the Livestrong presence online, and how they look at Social Media as a fundraising tool.
