With over 500 million users, Facebook is the undisputed king of social media. Many users are now turning to Facebook first to learn about businesses and organizations. So, how can a non-profit make the most of Facebook?

A detailed list of things non-profits can do to improve the way they use facebook. I'm sure it is surprising for organizations to find out how much work is truly involved in keeping a social media account up to date and relevant.

Wikipedia turns ten years old this month. Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia that is open to anyone with an internet connection to write on any topic that they see fit. IT is more of a starting place for research on things because of its open user format, but those dedicated to Wikipedia usually come in and remove any nonsense that a person, place, or event may accumulate. The founders of Wikipedia could have easily made a fortune, but in turn decided to make Wikipedia a non-profit, charitable business.

I like this article because it has applications to things like oil pipelines. Whenever I hear of a leak in a pipeline I wonder why technology fails to automate a relatively quick solution. A website, www.protectyourtexasborder.com, launched March 3rd, which was originally intended to be a forum for farmers, ranchers, and other border dwellers to discuss border violence spawned by illegal immigrants and drug smugglers, has "turned into a political hot potato". It has spawned some senators to call for its removal because it "exaggerates the problem" faced on the borders. U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes, D-El Paso, has spearheaded the campaign for its removal, citing it as a waste of tax payer dollars as well as breeding hate speech and other such things.

The disasterous earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear meltdown that is being experienced in Japan has had some policymakers in the US crying for reexaminations into our own infrastructure to make sure that if we were struck by some sort of natural disaster our infrastructure would fair better than Japans. The head of California's state office of technology sees social media as a "force multiplier" and is aggressively expanding the state's mobile presence this year, aiming to double the number of mobile apps offered in 2011. Adrian Farley, the acting director and chief technology officer of OTech, told OhMyGov.com in an exclusive interview that the state of California, one of the earliest adopters of social media in government, had been very fortunate in experiencing almost no cultural pushback in attempts to integrate social media into official public communications. 

The Kentucky Office Of Homeland Security (KOHS) has released an iPhone app that allows users to be "the eyes and ears" of Kentucky in hopes to prevent domestic terror attacks. The app allows users to submit information on suspects who act strangely, ask questions about building security, or other such things. The app also allows users to submit information anonymously.

The Microsoft Unlimited Potential Blog discusses important themes from from the 2011 Nonprofit Technology Conference. It will be interesting to look back on this later and see just how much things have changed.

This blog not only gives nonprofits ideas on how to do things bigger and better to make a difference. Many of the ideas can be done on an individual level as well.

These topic seem are important on how its educated us about what technology does to the nonprofit or government. some of the things they Author point out were impactful, innovation, and tranformative all these words were used for the change a technolgy could do to the alter the nonprofit or government programs. i think that it useful to have these technology that support our ideas about negative impact that could damage nonprofit work in some ways.

Although this article is a a couple years old I think it raises many good points in regards to the public sectors use of technology compared to that in the Business world. I think the author was correct in his assumptions that inefficiencies in the technology are in large part due to the lack of competition in the government. Perhaps, if the government were to do like the article suggests, and base their e-government procedures off of a business model than things may run a bit more easily.
