Learning In Burlington: BYOT and one-to-one initiatives are literacy initiatives - 0 views

  •
"As a school leader who recently sold my community on the importance of moving to a one-to-one environment where every student has access to a web-based device, I believe strongly that our students will be more literate than students in other schools who do not have access to web-enabled devices. A look at the world outside of our schools and the technological resources being accessed in so many professions that allow people to work "smarter" is a clear indication of the track that our students need to be on in order to be able to function in the "real world." The biggest stumbling block in schools even if we can get the devices is the proficiency level of the adults in the building in utilizing the technology resources effectively. This is not meant to be an indictment of educators, but it is a critical question that we all have to look at, assess, and then move forward. Technological tools/resources can assist educators in some of our biggest undertakings (i.e. common core standards integration, teacher evaluation, providing relevant professional development, etc.). However, because so many educators in schools are not comfortable with the most modern literacy skills we are not able to make better progress."

"This is by far the BEST stop motion app available. It is so easy to use which, as a parent of a 6 and 8 year old, is critical. Kids are able to use this with little to no parental guidance and more importantly, they LOVE this app. "

The Original Fantasy: Beginnings Part 1: Cast The Spell In The First Line - 2 views

  •
'Beginnings are important. They are your fishing lure, your bling, your spider's web, your black hole from which there is no return until series end. It is what a new reader will judge you on, an editor will judge you on, an agent will judge you on. Frankly anyone who can read, and is looking at your book will judge you on it. No pressure.'

Information Literacy Weblog: Using Flickr for scientific discovery - 1 views

"Not sure whether this is information literacy, but it is an example of knowledge being extended and disseminated using the internet. It is also an example of the power of browsing and encountering as information behaviour strategies, as the taxonomist came across the new species because he randomly browses pictures of insects on Flickr."

Library Currants: Finding fiction fast! - 1 views

  •
The National Yearof Reading launch is this week. To celebrate reading and make our fiction more user friendly we are rearranging it into popular genres. We already have an extensive Graphic novel collection which is housed separately and which has proved to be very popular both for casual in house reading and borrowing. It is brightly labelled and easy to find and browse so we decided to extend this idea to the rest of the fiction collection.

School Systems Blog - Project-Based Learning: What is it? - 1 views

  •
"Project-based learning (PBL) is a method used to cultivate learning and teach students 21st century skills. The idea is "built upon authentic learning activities that engage student interest and motivation," and "generally reflect the types of learning and work people do in everyday world outside the classroom" (pbl-online.org). During project-based learning, students are approached with a complex question, problem, or challenge, which they respond to through a lengthy process of analysis and reflection. These projects are carefully planned, managed, and evaluated-and in the end students have created a high-quality, meaningful product."

Quick Guide to Gamification - Online Universities.com - 0 views

  •
"This all sounds amazing, but it won't happen until game developers and educators can come together to create educational games that have rich content and the strong engagement that is currently only seen in the best commercial games. The real gamification of education is going to take years of serious effort to make happen, but that doesn't make it any less fun to think about right now. "

I have just completed this course. It was good for the background knowledge and access to resources, video etc. I would use it in conjunction with what I have researched is happening in schools. I feel more confident to apply the principles to my teaching.

Teaching with Infographics is Essential for Visual Literacy - 1 views

  •
"The importance of infographics in literacy education is essential. Literacy is more than just reading and writing. Literate people can infer meaning, communicate with others, and capture ideas in many different ways. With infographics, I hope that educators can broaden our students' visual literacy."

How to Create Your Own Search Engine - 3 views

  •
"One of the reasons that some teachers like to create their custom search engines is so that they can control which websites appear when their students search. You can also control how many sites appear in a search result by building a custom search engine. This can be useful with young students who are just learning to search and can be overwhelmed by the number of results or confused by content that is far above their reading levels. "

What is digital literacy? - 6 views

  •
"Digital literacy is the topic that made the etmooc learning space so irresistible to me… I think as educators we spout off about wanting our students to be digitally literate, but not many of us (myself included) have a firm grasp about what that actually means, and quite a number of us are still attempting to become digitally literate ourselves."

The Teacher's Quick Guide To Pinterest | Edudemic - 4 views

  •
"Pinterest is straightforward and doesn't require a lot of technological experience to get started. Educators should review their school district's policies to make sure they are in compliance before opening a Pinterest account as it is a public site and any ideas that are "pinned" may be re-pinned to another user's site. In order to create a Pinterest group for a course you are teaching, you will need to do the following:"
