The June 20 edition of Campus Technology includes an article highlighting six project management practices when implementing a new IT project. One practice focuses on "invest in discovery," which notes that The City University of New York (CUNY) chose Oracle PeopleSoft to handle integration work when replacing its systems for finance, human resources and student administration. CUNY asked Oracle to participate in an extensive discovery process before the contract was signed. The article explains that the process gave both sides a chance to understand each requirement in depth, helped CUNY avoid major fees during the implementation phase, and gave CUNY an opportunity to understand Oracle's implementation methodology.

Meanwhile, Saks is working with Oracle in an ambitious project called Project Evolution that will deliver new computer systems including merchandising and finance. That will help Saks meld its online business with its physical stores. For example, by fall 2013, the company plans to be able to fulfill online orders from its Saks Fifth Avenue stores.

Saks is working hard to cater to shoppers who are buying both in the stores and online. During a conference call with investors, Saks CEO Steve Sadove talked about how important it is to merge its physical stores with its online business. The company is investing in an ambitious multi-year project with Oracle called "Project Evolution" that will help create a more seamless operation. By 2013, it expects to fulfill online orders from its Saks Fifth Avenue stores.

The April 28 edition of The Chronicle of Higher Education includes the following article highlighting the open-source software market in higher education, with a focus on the Kuali Foundation.  The article includes comment based on an interview with Mark Armstrong, vice president for higher education product development, Oracle, who notes that when building an ERP-scale product via open-source, it is really difficult to sustain long term.  Additionally, the article further discusses that Oracle remains a big supporter of community-sourced projects and that Kuali has produced interesting and creative work, challenging the notion that the ERP marketplace lacks competition and that for-profit vendors mercilessly bilk colleges.

The Aug. 15 edition of GreenTechMedia includes the following article discussing the future of the smart grid. The article highlights smart grid expert Andres Carvallo's presentation from The Soft Grid 2012 conference, and notes his comments regarding utilities' adoption of cloud computing and the utility "big data" challenge. The article mentions that Austin Energy is working on with Oracle on an IT-based project. The article also includes a comment from Oracle Utilities' Linda Jackman noting that utilities have their own reasons to keep as much of their IT work in-house as possible, but investor-owned utilities in particular are under pressure to spend on IT capital expenses, which they can recover in rate cases, rather than on operational expenses like cloud services that do not offer such guaranteed payback.

Austin University and to help improve their student service and information availability while simplifying technology management.

In spite of a credit card breach a few months back, execs with Neiman Marcus are pleased at the pace with which the company is growing, especially in the online arena. In a keynote address last week at the two-day Oracle Industry Connect conference in Boston, Karen Katz, president and chief executive officer of Neiman Marcus Group Ltd. LLC, said the $5 billion retailer is in the midst of its largest-ever capital project, overhauling its merchandising system using Oracle. "It is big, scary and risky, and the only path we could have taken," said Katz. In addition, the company is making more tech enhancements to its 41 stores, including working further on its new app, which allows sales associates to chat with customers, send them product collages and make merchandise suggestions.

The July 24 edition of University Business includes the following article highlighting Stephen F. Austin University's (SFA) implementation of Oracle Exadata Database Machine to improve registration and student system reliability. The article notes that the implementation enables students to register for classes more quickly with virtually no system bottlenecks or downtime. Further, due to the improved system reliability and scalability, SFA's systems and administration team has been able to reduce staff overtime by eliminating the need to work nights and weekends to address performance issues.
