The January 18 edition of Campus Technology includes the following article highlighting that Oracle released a new version of its PeopleSoft development and customization platform, PeopleTools.  The article notes that version 8.52 includes enhancements to the user interface and reporting tools, as well as iPad support for all versions of PeopleSoft.

Supervalu has enhanced its deployment of 2,200-plus iPads to managers across its enterprise by implementing the Oracle Identity Management 11g Release 2, providing secure, real-time access to back-office applications and business data from anywhere on the store floor. The Oracle solution replaced two separate directory environments with just one directory, with a 98% conversion rate for applications that integrate with the directory, minimizing downtime and user impact. The deployment also consolidated the directory server infrastructure from 15 servers down to five, reducing IT complexity and management responsibilities

While there's been much focus on consumer mobile devices, there's also much to be gained from using mobile devices equipped to help run the business. This is especially true for retailers when critical, day-to-day decision-makers are in the field visiting stores. Imagine a district manager walking into a store with an iPad that provides current sales trends, inventory reports or labor productivity for that store, complete with exceptions highlighted and the ability to drill into details...

Retailers are also benefiting from more pervasive access to real-time information. Data stored in superfast in-memory computer systems allows store managers to generate reports in real time instead of at the end of a day or week, and new data visualization technologies make that data more comprehensible and actionable. "Now this is on everyone's iPhone or iPad in real time," says Dorf. "The speed at which technology allows us to get access to information is changing things dramatically."
