  • You can build it but they won’t come. All successful open source projects build communities of supportive engaged developers who identify with the project and keep it productive and useful.
  • Ongoing maintenance and distribution of the data hasn’t been budgeted for almost all the data sets we have today. This attitude has to change, and new projects give us the chance to get it right, but most existing datasets are unfunded for maintenance and release.
  • there are at least five different types of Open Data groupie: low-polling governments who want to see a PR win from opening their data, transparency advocates who want a more efficient and honest government, citizen advocates who want services and information to make their lives better, open advocates who believe that governments act for the people therefore government data should be available for free to the people, and wonks who are hoping that releasing datasets of public toilets will deliver the same economic benefits to the country as did opening the TIGER geo/census dataset.

    We live in a completely different world from the one in which books were the most important way of sharing knowledge and experience among people and the only way of passing it forward to next generations. We now write blogs instead of diaries; send SMS messages and Tweets instead of postcards; and use a Blackberry instead of a postman to bring us e-mail letters. Does Challenge:Future (C:F) need a book? The answer is Yes and No. Yes, because in a world where the only constant is change, a printed book is a frozen memory of a moment in time. It holds our thoughts, plans, ideas, and fears from a time that has passed and helps us remember how things once were. A book is something we will dust off one day, browse and rememberthe "good old days."

    When we study Marx in my graduate social theory course, it never fails that at least one student will say (approximately), "Class struggle didn't escalate in the way Marx expected. In modern capitalist societies class struggle has disappeared. So isn't it clear that Marx was wrong and his ideas are of little value today?" I respond by challenging the premise that class struggle has disappeared. On the contrary, I say that class struggle is going on all the time in every major institution of society. One just has to learn how to recognize it. One needn't embrace the labor theory of value to understand that employers try to increase profits by keeping wages down and getting as much work as possible out of their employees. As the saying goes, every successful capitalist knows what a Marxist knows; they just apply the knowledge differently. Workers' desire for better pay and benefits, safe working conditions, and control over their own time puts them at odds with employers. Class struggle in this sense hasn't gone away. In fact, it's inherent in the relationship between capitalist employer and employee. What varies is how aggressively and overtly each side fights for its interests.

Wenn man eines Tages ein eBook erfände, dass sich mit anderen verbinden würde sowie mit dem Netz hätte man eine Chance soziales Lesen einzuführen.
  • Überfluß Wir leben in den Zeiten des Überflußes, nicht Überfluß an Geld oder Wasser aber eben an digitalisiertem Wissen. Es gibt aber auch einen Überfluß an Mist, an Überflüssigem. Leider sind wir gut darin, mit dem Überfluß des Schlechten und Unnützen umzugehen (Spamfilter) nicht aber darin, mit dem vielen Wissen etwas anzufangen.

  • Transparenz als neue Authorität Wer also Einsicht in seine Methoden liefert, wie man auch bei Wikipedia erkennen kann, an den teilweise leidenschaftlichen Diskussion, der erhält auch Authorität. Weil man eben alles  nachvollziehen kann. Es steht ja auch jedem frei selbst an die Texte Hand anzulegen, wenn man meint, es besser zu wissen. Ein Lexikon eines großen Verlages tritt immer auf, als wäre das enthaltene Wissen irgendwo im Weltraum entstanden, wir können nicht erkennen, warum eine bestimmte Behauptung aufgestellt wurde. Bei Wikipedia ist das möglich. Fast jeder Satz wird umfassend diskutiert – zumindest bei vielen wichtigen Einträgen. Und genau das unterscheidet ja auch unser Selbstverständis jetzt im Gegensatz zu der Zeit vor dem Internet. Weil wir uns unserer Möglichkeiten und Verbindungen miteinander immer wieder im Web versichern können und damit einerseits mehr Wissen schaffen, das mit anderen zusammen erstellt wurde und gleichzeitig damit eine Verbindung der Menschen untereinander und mit dem Wissen immer wieder neu aktualisiert wird.

      Entscheidungen werden von mehr Leuten mitgetragen ... müssen dadurch aber nicht besser werden. Ich sehe die Gefahr des großen "Blufs" ... Zahlt es sich aus, die MAssen begeistern zu wollen (die anscheinend ja nicht von selbst kommen), ist eine kleine elitäre Gruppe hochgradig involvierter nicht besser? Surowiecky sagt, dass kogintionsprobleme (wie viele Drops sind im dem Glas, wie schwer ist die Kuh?) sehr gut von der Masse gelöst werden, über beteiligung im Government meint er: "making policy in a democracy is not a cognition problem; it is a cooperation and coordination problem with fuzzier and less definitive answers" und ist der Meinung Wisdow of the crowd wäre hier nicht direkt anwendbar.
