  • There are now several implementations of multi-user virtual environments (MUVEs) that have produced evidence of their educational validity. These implementations, however, do not make full use of the educational possibilities offered by MUVEs – namely the potential for students to learn through design and construct of artefacts within the virtual environment. This paper outlines a design-based research project that aims to implement and evaluate a MUVE that focuses on student design and construction of in-world artefacts. The discussion covers theoretical groundings, the challenges of construction and outlines a progression of activities that meet these challenges. An initial pilot study is described and reported.

EcoMUVE - 1 views

  •
EcoMUVE is an exciting new curriculum research project at the Harvard Graduate School of Education that uses immersive virtual environments to teach middle school students about ecosystems and causal patterns. EcoMUVE includes two one‐week computer‐based modules within a four week inquiry‐based ecosystems curriculum. The goal of the EcoMUVE project is to help students develop a deeper understanding of ecosystems and causal patterns with a curriculum that uses Multi‐User Virtual Environments (MUVEs). MUVEs are 3‐D virtual worlds that have a look and feel similar to videogames. They are accessed via computers and, in our case, recreate authentic ecological settings within which students explore and collect information. Students work individually at their computers and collaborate in teams within the virtual world. The immersive interface allows students to learn science by exploring and solving problems in realistic environments. The EcoMUVE project is supported by the Institute of Educational Sciences (IES), U.S. Department of Education.

How to Install Currency Into OpenSim | eHow.com - 0 views

  •
Unlike other online virtual world clients such as Second Life, OpenSimulator does not feature a method of exchanging or using currency. However, the online virtual world platform does feature protocol hooks that allow administrators to install currency modules. After installing the currency module, users can enjoy a greater level of social realism when playing OpenSimulator by buying and selling items with online currency. You will need the WAMP server suite already installed and functional, as changes will be made to the Apache HTTP server and MySQL database service located within the suite.
