Intel Labs' Collaborative Efforts Speed Technological Breakthroughs, Shape Future of Co... - 0 views

  • As part of its strategy to increase collaboration across the industry and academic sectors, Intel Labs announced it will release source code for its Distributed Scene Graph 3-D Internet technology. This code is part of an ongoing effort to augment the OpenSim open-source virtual world simulator and will enable developers to build virtual regions where people can work or play online with a cast of thousands, instead of being limited to less than a hundred today – a more than 20 times improvement. Virtual environments have applications from entertainment and education to social networking. Intel showed an example of how the technology could enable a massive multi-player “game” to train first responders for different disaster scenarios.

EcoMUVE - 1 views

  •
EcoMUVE is an exciting new curriculum research project at the Harvard Graduate School of Education that uses immersive virtual environments to teach middle school students about ecosystems and causal patterns. EcoMUVE includes two one‐week computer‐based modules within a four week inquiry‐based ecosystems curriculum. The goal of the EcoMUVE project is to help students develop a deeper understanding of ecosystems and causal patterns with a curriculum that uses Multi‐User Virtual Environments (MUVEs). MUVEs are 3‐D virtual worlds that have a look and feel similar to videogames. They are accessed via computers and, in our case, recreate authentic ecological settings within which students explore and collect information. Students work individually at their computers and collaborate in teams within the virtual world. The immersive interface allows students to learn science by exploring and solving problems in realistic environments. The EcoMUVE project is supported by the Institute of Educational Sciences (IES), U.S. Department of Education.

OpenSim Terrain Tutorial via Blender - Part 1 - 0 views

  •
Blender 2.5 has a new import feature that can be used for making terrain in Blender. Most terrain tutorials are about getting terrain into Blender and little if anything about getting it out. Those that are about exporting terrain are mostly for Blender 2.49. There are enough changes between 2.49 and 2.59 that it is hard to figure how to accomplish 2.49 tasks in 2.59. This article is about importing terrain to Blender and exporting for use in Second Life and OpenSim. Part 1 is about getting terrain in and Part 2 about getting terrain out.
