  • There are now several implementations of multi-user virtual environments (MUVEs) that have produced evidence of their educational validity. These implementations, however, do not make full use of the educational possibilities offered by MUVEs – namely the potential for students to learn through design and construct of artefacts within the virtual environment. This paper outlines a design-based research project that aims to implement and evaluate a MUVE that focuses on student design and construction of in-world artefacts. The discussion covers theoretical groundings, the challenges of construction and outlines a progression of activities that meet these challenges. An initial pilot study is described and reported.

Designing Digitally, Inc. Wins 2011 Air Force Research Lab Virtual World Contract - 0 views

  • STEM, which stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics, is an educational initiative dedicated to helping high school and college students prepare for the workforce and the post-secondary educational system. STEM education is designed to knock down barriers to learning by integrating the four distinct subjects into one for teaching and learning. The idea is to allow students to explore math and science in a more interactive, hands-on manner so they can develop critical thinking skills to solve problems.

Designing Digitally, Inc., the web-based training firm that specializes in E-learning, virtual worlds, and 3D simulations, was recently awarded a 2011 Air Force Virtual World contract from the United States Air Force Research Laboratory located in Dayton, Ohio. This means the simulation experts at Designing Digitally, Inc. will dedicate the next year to creating an OpenSim virtual world grid, called Virtual Discovery Lab (ViDL), in which high school and college students can explore these technical topics in a hands-on, educational environment.

PIXIEVIEWER - A web based virtual world viewer - 4 views

  •
Pixieviewer is a browser based viewer for virtual 3D environments. It is designed to run on any device (including tablets and mobile phones) which supports modern HTML5 capable browsers like Firefox, Chrome, Safari and others. It can either be connected to a standalone backbone called Pixiegrid as also has a (planned, in dev) connector to Opensimulator based virtual 3D worlds. Pixieviewer directly supports 3D mesh objects created with popular tools like blender etc.

This innovative concept is extremely easy to use: just draw an outline from a background image to make a 3D textured model! Or you can use a blank view and just draw the shapes you want from scratch. It's the most intuitive approach to sketch out the shapes and enhance them with textures and photographs. Archipelis Designer does all this. Clearly, It's the easiest way to build Second Life content.

Let-Us-Learn is an international project that aims to investigate the potential of a 3D virtual learning environment (3DVLE) designed to engage learners in collaborative, creative problem solving activities in which numeracy, literacy, life skills and creative activities are embedded in a motivating game-like environment. The general idea is make OpenSim technology into a learning environment for students in countries such as South Africa and Uganda (among others). Teaching everything from farming techniques and household economics, to multiplication tables.
