Personalized Learning Definition - The Glossary of Education Reform - 2 views

I feel some teachers still feel this way.  Maybe it is a lack of understanding of the MANY different ways personalized learning can look
  • When investigating or reporting on personalized learning, it is important to determine precisely how the term is being used in a specific context.

In my experience, terminology can muddy the waters in many discussions on educational topics. It is important that everyone sitting around the table holds a similar definition of the topic being discussed or little headway will be made.
    • ksteingr

That is so true Denise. A shared definition of a concept is critical for change.
  • The conflation of related but distinct terms and strategies such “differentiated instruction,” “personalized instruction,” and “individualized instruction” has likely contributed to ongoing confusion and debates about personalized learning, particularly given that these distinct terms are commonly used interchangeably.
    • denise carlson

This makes me wonder how "competency-based" education fits in with these ideas. If i remember correctly, Kentucky has made some movement in that direction in the last couple of years.  In addition, the DE has a small group of folks working on CBE. Will this add to the confusion around personalized learning?

To me, the idea of using this time for small team time or working with mentors is positive. It would allow students to work on individual projects that go beyond or catch up with the work being done in a class, as one possibility.
  • Increasing the level of choice and personal responsibility students have in the instructional process.
    • ksteingr

If we are really going to explore Personalize learning, then we have to include student voices. They are as responsible, if not more, as we are for moving forward. They can "hold us" to the promise to give them different assignments and challenges. Even helping create these themselves. Not at all easy, but to keep online learning from just being a way for people to complete assignments remotely, we have to have a way for students to share what they are ready for next and what they have learned, individually.
  • Personalized learning is generally seen as an alternative to so-called “one-size-fits-all” approaches to schooling
    • Janet Wills

Is this another way to say differentiation?
  •  When investigating or reporting on personalized learning, it is important to determine precisely how the term is being used in a specific context.
  • Replacing more traditional homeroom periods or study halls with advisories—time in the school day for educators to meet with small groups of students and advise them on academic

Otus is new to me. Do any of you have experience with it? What are the major differences between Otus and Moodle. In another part of my life I'm trying to learn Blackboard and I'm not finding it very intuitive. How about Otus?

I certainly like the idea of being able offer flipped learning opportunities, however, technology in the students' homes needs to seriously be considered.  I am sitting here in rural Roland and my internet is taking forever to upload this video!  Very frustrating when I want to accomplish much but am restricted by the limits of my internet.  Same experience last Sunday and Monday when 28 days of OLLIE started...couldn't work from home.

The online access is awesome, but what about students who are not able to access the internet outside of school?  This seems like an opportunity gap.  Who do we address the opportunity gap for our lower income students?

Common Craft does an excellent job of creating videos that simplify new concepts.  It helps us engage in conversations, peeks our interest, and allows us to begin something new with less anxiety.  I really like using Common Craft videos!

Common Craft does an excellent job of simplifying new concepts that are easy to understand.  Their videos can get conversations started, peek our interests, and ease anxiety about change.  This video on blended learning shows how many classrooms are already in the blended beginning stage - teachers just don't label it.

Blended learning can be the best of two world's: face-to-face teaching and online learning. It can really take the knowledge teachers have of their students and use it to enhance the learning

This can be quite hard since I only have my students for 45 minutes.  They don't get to come for extra time or with a different grade/ability level because of scheduling.  Using online resources could help me implement more differentiation.

I've never actually had time to do much assessment.  I started this year experimenting with Google Classroom, and I think I could find ways to utilize that resource more for my formative assessments.

You don't have to make everything into an online version.  Showing students a recorder fingering works better when you can manipulate their fingers.

[Infographic] What Teachers and Parents Feel About Technology in the Classroo... - 4 views

This edtech infographic shows how teachers and parents feel about technology in the classroom.
  •
I'd like to know more about creating infographics. Any info appreciated! Thanks
  •
As a teacher and a parent, I feel too much of anything is not good. I do not like them sitting in front of a 'TV screen' during the day. I think it is too much screen time. There are also health issues to it. My daughter has fused bones in her neck because she has an iPad for school that all the teachers use and she looks down at it and has created problems in her neck. I realize we have to get the students ready for the high tech world they will live in, but before all the high tech, we did just fine with the 'old school' methods and helped teach the kids that came up with the technology. 'Old school' can't be that bad!

May one stream a Netflix Video for in-class use? | University of North Texas Libraries - 2 views

There is some helpful info from Carrie Russell, ALA Copyright Office (American Library Association) and yes you can. Her points were shared at a workshop. This doesn't summarize that, but is another reference point http://www.slj.com/2012/09/authors-illustrators/interviews/interview-alas-carrie-russell-talks-about-copyright-in-the-classroom/#_

I really appreciate this information, which is a bit different than past information. It does not, however, deal with the online aspect of a private account, which I think goes beyond the pieces of this. In other words, it seems that you could show a clip in a blended classroom, but you could not rip the content and then load it to your class site. I think I am correct on that.
  •
This is interesting because I have not used Netflix in my classroom, but I would not have thought about asking if it was alright to use.

Today's girls are tomorrow's engineers: creative, inquisitive, analytical, and smart. They can see solutions to everyday problems in random items like bags of apples and pencils. It's pretty amazing. And boy, do we need them. Here are three facts you probably didn't know about women and engineering. That's right.

I really love Google Classroom and it keeps getting better and better.  I think the learning curve is pretty low for most teachers and the students in 1 to 1 schools seem to like using it.
