El contenido fundamentalmente disponible en la Web y los medios electrónicos ha cambiado la dinámica de cómo operan y administran su misión las bibliotecas. Lo que está llevando hacia un cambio en cuanto a las responsabilidades y competencias profesionales; los bibliotecarios en esta era digital proporcionan acceso, orientación y formación a los materiales físicos y electrónicos en línea sin dejar de atender las tareas fundamentales que han contribuido a la esencia a la profesión durante siglos.

The wonderful blog, Hack Library School, has recently posted a piece on open access publishing. This piece is a great overview, which covers many of the basic concepts covered in Module 6. The article discusses what open access is (and what it isn't) and some of the biggest discussion points on the issue today. It's a great overview and well worth the read if you want an overview or a refresher on the topic!

This blog covers a lot of relevant concepts related to OA, but a finer point need to be clarified. Regarding Google Scholar, not everything retrieved from GS is OA. GS is a web crowler, it crows wherever it is allowed, including references and citations to articles behind paywalls. On the other hand, many librarians are working to make their paid journals subscriptions available to their faculty and students via Google Scholar. So when faculty/students are on their universities' network, they can search GS, find articles from journals. If their library subscribes to that journal, there is a good chance a link to the full text will be available.

I agree with the point that "findability" for green OA articles is a current problem. We need a PubMed or Web of Science for green OA articles!

a. Although this is a psychology article, it poses an important concern over the rise of internet addiction in connected populations. This article is relevant to this course, as it relates to the notion of critical consumption; some users are unable to filter information effectively, which should be recognized as a concern. Young states many statistics from educators and researchers discounting internet use in the classroom as it is far too distracting and the loss of productivity (in both students and the workforce) is immense.

Some might argue that this article shows the downside of connected learning and e-resources, however this is not the case. Certain web activities mentioned in the paper such as chat rooms, social media, and video games are not the focus of this course. Open Knowledge deals with the light side of the internet, which is the interconnectivity, the accelerated learning, and the ability to publish ones own content. The internet can definitely be misused, but not every web activity is "junk food". If someone obsessively became a mathematician and ultimately ended up being the best mathematician in the world due to "addiction" people would call him or her a genius. The trick is to filter which content and activities one engages in.

When we are browsing online, we do not think about electronic privacy and the personal information our computer leaves. Some may be aware of this, but some are not. Companies and other electronic sites are collecting our private information when we are browsing online. They keep track on the things we buy and things we may search. We need to protect our Internet privacy while surfing the Web and monitor the information our computer sends out. Another option you can do is to control your personal information online and offline. Although IP addresses can provide a fairly detailed summary of our computer, Web browser cookies provide a more complete profile of a user's preferences. Three types of cookies are sent out when we surf the Internet. The three types of cookies are session cookie, persistent cookie, and third-party ad-serving cookie. I had heard about it through a computer specialist a few years back. Since then, we try to be more careful but I think that if someone wants information from you the wil get it anyway.

Very good essay about the future of books. I particularly liked chapter two where you get a kind of mixed image of the current state of the book; on the one hand, it is stated that e-book sales are declining to the benefit of the physical book, but on the other hand it discusses how giants like Amazon has a very negative effect on the book business. Interesting for sure!

This is a great follow-up reading to the core reading for module5 from J. Willinksky (2006). I thought it was timely now though written 12 years ago, due to the surge in citizen video journalism and ease of access to government websites now for public policy information, voting and campaigning.

There are two versions (at least) of this text. One earlier version is a first draft of sorts "A BOOK CROWDSOURCED IN ONE WEEK MAY 21-28, 2010" http://hackingtheacademy.org/ The url supplied above (http://quod.lib.umich.edu/cgi/t/text/text-idx?cc=dh;c=dh;idno=12172434.0001.001;rgn=full%20text;view=toc;xc=1;g=dculture) gives you access to the slicker version. Both can be read online. The text professes to a hacker ethos: "1 The world is full of fascinating problems waiting to be solved. 2 No problem should ever have to be solved twice. 3 Boredom and drudgery are evil. 4 Freedom is good. 5 Attitude is no substitute for competence." One of the opening chapters encourages academics to "get out of the business." "Burn the boats/books" focuses on the need to move away from "librocentrism." Something I hadn't thought of: "A PDF document is not a web-based document. It is a print-based document distributed on the web." This is to make the point that online materials should be interactive, which a pdf is not. The focus is hacking scholarship, teaching, and institutions. Seems worth dipping into here and there .

El objetivo de este documento es proponer a las bibliotecas universitarias una estrategia tecnológica para adaptarse a los cambios que se están produciendo en los ámbitos del aprendizaje y la investigación. Los principales cambios a los que nos vamos a referir son: la web es la nueva plataforma para la comunicación de la información, esta web está orientada no sólo a los humanos sino también a las máquinas y está potenciando el trabajo en red y en colaboración. Por otra parte, esta forma de trabajar está generando un nuevo concepto de unidad de información, modelada no sólo por la necesidad de representar nuevas formas de publicación (texto, data, simulaciones…) en las nuevas prácticas científicas, sino también por los cambios en la naturaleza de las herramientas de creación y los entornos en que se usan. Finalmente, cada vez más, los usuarios no sólo consumen información, sino que también quieren participar en su generación (blogs, wikis, youtube, slideshare...). Se describen las implicaciones que esos cambios están teniendo en el entorno de las bibliotecas universitarias: la importancia del e-learning, los CRAI y el nuevo modelo de comunicación y publicación científica y se indican algunas líneas de actuación para orientar la estrategia tecnológica de las bibliotecas a la luz de estas transformaciones: nuevo concepto de unidad de información, interoperabilidad, flexibilidad y arquitecturas abiertas.

In the whole article, there's one quote from Clive Thompson got my attention, "Twitter is the place where you could be like 'here's my one thought' and then link somewhere. I no longer needed to write a one-paragraph blog post about it, and Twitter scratched that itch and gave it a larger audience than it might have had." While people addict to twitter for fun, the fact is Twitter is actually a very good platform to share and learn knowledge.
