Resumen: Medios tradicionales, redes sociales, reporteros, nuevos medios, blogue- ros, periodismo ciudadano, prensa en papel, contenido generado por el usuario, medios ciudadanos... Todo está cambiando en la era digital: la industria musical, la cinematográfica, la manera de informar e informarnos y, cómo no, los medios de comunicación. Conocer y saber qué está cambiando en este nuevo ecosistema mediático es imprescindible para innovar y afrontar esos retos con ciertas garantías. En este libro nos adentramos en el periodismo ciudadano, en la participación de los usuarios como generadores de información, convertidos ahora en creadores de sus propios medios(ciudadanos). La antigua audiencia pasiva ahora es activa: los usuarios se pueden informar unos a otros, tanto a nivel global como en los ámbitos más locales, haciendo un uso intensivo de las herramientas tecnológicas que tienen a su alcance, a través del gran canal de distribución que es Internet. Esta es una de las razones por las que los ciudadanos, implicados en tareas informativas (periodistas ciudadanos), se han convertido en el quinto poder, en los vigilantes del cuarto poder

The concept of student peer review has gained increased attention in higher education in recent years, in line with the growing focus on peer and collaborative learning (Falchikov, 2005; Van den Berg et al.; 2006). Peer review is a form of peer assessment that has been used for over three decades in a wide range of disciplines from Architecture to Computer Science to Music, just to name a few.

In thinking about the Wayback Machine and archiving webpages, this new tool brings to light archival possibilities for social media.

Wow, great article! This really complements the ideas we have been talking about this week regarding digital preservation. I've been thinking a lot about the idea of preserving and accessing closed social networks of the past this week, and didn't even think to make the connection to this weeks' readings until now. I actually introduced my roommate to the Wayback Machine this week and together we were able to find her tacky old Lord of the Rings themed archived geocities website (and it was even worse that I could have imagined! hilarity ensued.) Of course, we were able to access something like geocities because it's a website that's open and available to the public. But what about a social network that requires a username and password? I recently tried to see if I could access my old myspace profile, and was shocked to find that myspace has transformed itself into a music-sharing site with none of the old social networking features it used to have. The information that used to be contained -- and the interactivity that went along with it -- are gone! Not to mention that, if it were searchable via a tool like the Wayback Machine, one would need to remember the *exact* URL to find it (for this sad, sad, reason, I have not been able to find my tacky old geocities website from way back when). This is a great idea and I look forward to seeing how the project evolves. Thanks for sharing!

Teachers are discovering the value of imparting media-literacy skills, from critical analysis of news programs, commercials, and films to basic design and video-production techniques.

This is an excellent video summarizing all the skills and necessity of them in a participatory culture. Everyone is spending more and more time in the multimedia world these days, especially the youth, who can be considered the most vulnerable. An ability to perceive all the information we are getting through a critical lens is profound, as is an ability to dissect and understand the logic of multimedia. Learning the tricks of graphics, cinema, music studies (collectively called "communication studies"), young people learn to understand and create media, find new ways to express themselves efficiently in an ever-changing world and supplement the traditional ("written") curriculum, which is behind the needs of today's man. The point is illustrated nicely by George Lucas, founder of The George Lucas Educational Foundation (GLEF): "Everybody is affected by this, and it should be taught in school." I agree 100%.

Re-thinking communication skills is absolutely essential for all educators, since much of the communication students are faced with during a day comes in the shape of different kinds of media. But the result of this is also that we need to address the fact that not all educators are necessarily equipped to teach about media because it's rarely included in teacher's programs (especially if you were trained twenty or thirty years ago). So the video makes a lot of good points about media-literacy and hopefully our educational systems will make sure that educators are given the tools to include this in their classrooms.

Hi Kim, Thanks for sharing this great work by Lawrence Lessig published ten years ago.

This video highlights ways in which educators (and parents) can incorporate 21st century skills in their lessons to digital natives. Admittedly, as a teacher, I get overwhelmed by all of the information out there and feel pressure to use technology that I'm still learning to be comfortable with. This is a good video that can show you how to get started, geared more towards middle/upper school.

The video begins with 3 minutes of visuals and - very annoying - piano music. I would have turned it off after 30 seconds because I assumed that there would be 13 minutes of this. But since fraup74 says it was a good video I skipped ahead to see if there was more. Otherwise, I would not have persevered. In terms of content, it is a good basic resource (a woman speaks, using screenshots to show how to use online tools). The video is not very engaging.
