I found this documentary very interesting even though I'm not an American. Especially the second part is very disturbing.

From June 2014, lecture at the Open Data Institute, UK. Professor Carr explains how the open web we know is just one of many attempts over the last century to build a planet-wide network of information. Why was this one successful? And will it continue to be so? Professor Leslie Carr is a Director of the Web Science Institute at the University of Southampton where he researches the impact of network technologies on our lives and economy, and in particular on the research and knowledge industries. Different parts of society have different objectives and hence incompatible Web requirements, e.g. openness, security, transparency, privacy."

"It's hard to explain to regular people how much technology barely works, how much the infrastructure of our lives is held together by the IT equivalent of baling wire. Computers, and computing, are broken." Love this one, because it explains in easy words the technological background why things (not) work as they work...

In an earlier issue of ETR&D, the editors provided an hierarchical framework of components to support learning and instruction. That hierarchy included information objects, knowledge objects, learning objects, instructional objects, courses, programs and ongoing efforts, with each subsequent component building on the former components.

This is a brief description of what indigenous knowledge is, and its importance to local cultures in Africa due to it being a system's foundation. The link also touches on the risks of losing this kind of knowledge with the increase of technology. Examples are of how people can be adversely affected by technology.

Interesting article including an interview about current challenges and strategic options for green OA repositories. The blog itself also contains many more articles in the field of open access.

Ms Kasian-Lew's article have a balanced view on the general fear about online privacy. We have no real choice but sharing in our digital world. I think we should learn to be aware of sharing and learn to live with a level publicity. I see it as a process of growing more conscious about our activities and the consequences. On the other hand we need to defend ourselves against the ill use of our shared information. We should inspire and support laws against it. And we might share good and bad examples and use the power of sharing. She is right awareness is fine, fear does not help.

Os comparto el link de Fundación Civio, asociación sin ánimo de lucro que trabaja en aras de la transparencia en las administraciones públicas. El acceso a la información pública en España está muy lejos de otros países como UK o USA

Esta es una iniciativa a través de la cual se reforman diversos artículos de Ley de Ciencia y Tecnología y la Ley General de Educación del país de México, con la finalidad de establecer que cualquier investigación realizada en las instituciones públicas, o con recursos públicos, o con el uso de la infraestructura financiera por los recursos públicos estén disponibles en formato de acceso abierto a través de plataformas en línea.

Open access, be it via institutional repositories or publishing using OJS, is fast becoming the norm for sharing research output. Africa needs to get onto the open access bandwagon.

The inventor of the world wide web believes an online "Magna Carta" is needed to protect and enshrine the independence of the medium he created and the rights of its users worldwide. Sir Tim Berners-Lee told the Guardian the web had come under increasing attack from governments and corporate influence and that new rules were needed to protect the "open, neutral" system.

"You might as well have come into our archives and burned our documents." An example of different ways of knowing between different cultures, and the opportunities for misunderstanding.

This is an interesting presentation given at 'EUNIS 2014 Conference: Higher Education in the Digital Era' by professors from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). Although the presentation concentrates on UAB experience and the COURSERA platform, it gives also a European perspective on use of MOOCs. According to the presentation, there were 510 MOOCs in April 2014 in Europe. Some findings are especially thought provoking. The UAB course on Egyptology had 25350 initially enrolled students. Only 1/3 of them watched the first video, and a completion certificate was issued to only 2950 students (11.7%). Another course (Pre-Calculus) had only 0.01% completion ratio. Something to really think about!
