Share a Story 2012: A Quick Look Back

We had several notes over the weekend from folks who were "just now" catching up on Share a Story - Shape a Future 2012 and reading the posts. We hope you're still basking in all that great, positive energy!!

The Giving Tree Narrated by Shel Silverstein

Last week, we were delighted to discover that legendary children's author Shel Silverstein, of The Giving Tree fame, was also a prolific songwriter, whose songs were recently - and beautifully - covered by contemporary indie icons.

In June of 2010, members of the Georgia Library Association and the Georgia Public Library Service launched this bi-monthly educational webinar series. The series highlights trends, innovation, and best practices in Georgia libraries. The free sessions feature Georgia speakers, but they are open to library employees from all geographic (and astral) locations. Topics are chosen to be of interest to employees of all library types, and each session is approved for one Georgia Continuing Education (CE) contact hour.

"The findings show that New Jersey school libraries and school librarians contribute in rich and diverse ways to the intellectual life of a school, and to the development of students who can function in a complex and increasingly digital information environment," said Dr. Ross Todd, lead researcher in the study and CISSL director.

A FREE Internet safety and cyber citizenship program for 3rd through 8th grades

Academic standards define expectations for the educational achievement of Minnesota's public school students in grades K-12. The standards and benchmarks are important because they: 1) identify the knowledge and skills that all students must achieve by the end of a grade level or grade band; 2) help define the course credit requirements for graduation; and, 3) serve as a guide for the local adoption and design of curricula. Student mastery of the standards is measured though state and local assessments.

Banned Books Week is an annual event drawing attention to the concept of intellectual freedom and is celebrated during the last week of September. In 2011 ALA introduced Banned Websites Awareness Day to draw attention to problems Internet filtering can cause. In Colorado, the State Library, which is part of the Department of Education, produced five videos that illustrate what a highly effective school librarian looks like.
