The DISCONEX research group "The Discursive Construction of Academic Excellence. Classifying Academic Researchers in the Social Sciences and Humanities", led by Professor Johannes Angermuller (Centre for Applied Linguistics, University of Warwick) is looking for candidates for a funded PhD position at the crossroads of language and society. Against a background in poststructuralist and constructivist social theory, DISCONEX studies the cultures, practices and knowledges of academic researchers in the social sciences and humanities. By having recourse to qualitative methods, the group will empirically investigate the social uses of academic publications in the social sciences and humanities (for more details http://www.johannes-angermuller.net/DISCONEX, another two stipends will be available from the French partner institution, CEMS/EHESS). The PhD projects will be in the domain of the Social Sciences and Humanities Studies and should focus on the social dynamics of scientific communities in two interdisciplinary fields (for example in letters/linguistics/philosophy and in sociology/anthropology/media and culture studies, in English and possibly in French or German).

The Sociology Program supports basic research on all forms of human social organization -- societies, institutions, groups and demography -- and processes of individual and institutional change. The Program encourages theoretically focused empirical investigations aimed at improving the explanation of fundamental social processes. Included is research on organizations and organizational behavior, population dynamics, social movements, social groups, labor force participation, stratification and mobility, family, social networks, socialization, gender, race and the sociology of science and technology. The Program supports both the collection of original data and secondary data analysis and is open tothe full range of quantitative and qualitative methodological tools. Theoretically grounded projects that offer methodological innovations and improvements for data collection and analysis are also welcomed. As part of its effort to encourage and support projects that explicitly integrate education and basic research, the Sociology Program provides support to improve the conduct of doctoral dissertation projects undertaken by doctoral students enrolled in U.S. Institutions of Higher Education (IHEs) when the dissertation research is conducted in a scientifically sound manner and it offers strong potential for enhancing more general scientific knowledge. The Sociology Program funds doctoral dissertation research to defray direct costs associated with conducting research, for example, dataset acquisition, additional statistical or methodological training, meeting with scholars associated with original datasets, and fieldwork away from the student's home campus. The Association for Jewish Studies is pleased to announce the Berman Foundation Dissertation Fellowships in Support of Research in the Social Scientific Study of the Contemporary American Jewish Community. The Berman Fellowships - two awards of $16,000 each for the 2014-15 academic year -aim to support the development and expansion of the field of the social scientific study of Jewish Americans and the contemporary Jewish-American experience; enhance funding opportunities for up-and-coming scholars in the midst of institutional cutbacks in higher education; and encourage graduate students in sociology, social psychology, social anthropology, demography, social work, economics, and political science to expand their research to include the study of North American Jewry. Fellowships will be awarded for one academic year, with the possibility of renewal for a second year. Preference will be given to applicants seeking support for doctoral research, but requests for funding to support the writing phase of the dissertation will also be considered. Support for this project is generously provided by the Mandell L. and Madeleine H. Berman Foundation.

The Max-Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity, Department of Religious Diversity in Göttingen is offering The Ph.D. fellowships are for 3-4 years. The dissertation will be defended at Utrecht University. The postdoctoral fellowships are for one or two years. The research will be done in collaboration with the Center for the Study of Ethnic and Cultural Diversity in China at Minzu University in Beijing. The projects have to be on the following topics: 1. The Society for Personality and Social Psychology has established a fund devoted to increasing diversity within personality and social psychology. As part of this initiative, eligible undergraduate students are invited to apply for an award that will cover the expense of registering for the SPSP annual conference. The SPSP Diversity and Climate Committee will also host a reception for award recipients during the conference (time and location to be announced). Undergraduate award winners are encouraged to attend this reception. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS Be currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree program majoring in psychology or be a graduate of such a program and currently working in areas related to psychology. Preference will be given to currently enrolled undergraduates.  Not have received this award in the past.  Be a member of an underrepresented group in social/personality psychology (these groups include, but are not necessarily limited to, ethnic and racial minorities; first-generation college students; lesbian, gay and bisexual students; transgendered students; and students with a physical disability).

The ABOG fellowship supports socially engaged projects that promote art as a catalyst for social change; projects that feature artists in leadership roles; dialogue-based projects that emphasize active and sustainable partnerships with communities; and projects in which artists engage community members as equal partners on locally relevant issues, or globally relevant issues as they apply to the local context. Projects in which co-creation with non-artists is part of the process are highly encouraged.

The Surdna Foundation is accepting proposals through its Artists Engaging in Social Change funding area for one- or two-year support for extraordinary artist-driven projects. Grants of up to $150,000 over two years will be awarded in support of compelling artists projects developed in response to specific challenges in their communities, as well as projects by artists whose work over the long term has increased social engagement without necessarily being explicitly defined as "activist."  All artistic disciplines will be considered, including cross-disciplinary work. The funds are designated for one-time project support and cannot support organizations' ongoing programs, operations, capital, or endowments, although up to 15 percent administrative overhead is allowed. To be eligible, projects must be artist-led and demonstrate a deep commitment to a community, as demonstrated by the process through which the work is developed and the theme or themes on which it is focused. Applicants can be at any stage of their careers but must have a track record of developed work that demonstrates their capacity to complete the proposed project and to manage the level of funds requested. Both 501(c)(3) organizations and individual artists are eligible to apply, but artists and collectives that are not incorporated as 501(c)(3)s must apply under a fiscal sponsor. SSHM invites submissions to its 2014 SSHM Undergraduate Prize Competition. Up to 6 prizes will be awarded for the best unpublished original research essays in the social history of medicine. We will consider two groups of undergraduate students: humanities and social science students, and medical, healthcare and allied science students.

The CSWE Gero-Ed Center will provide a travel scholarship for a baccalaureate or master's level social work student with an interest in aging to attend the 2013 CSWE Annual Program Meeting (APM) and its Gero-Ed Track events. The student awardee will receive a complimentary APM registration and $500 to be used toward travel expenses. The student will be expected to write a short reflection about his or her experience at APM that will be featured on our website.

The Disability Determination Process (DDP) Small Grant Program is a one-year $10,000 stipend program awarded to graduate-level students to conduct supervised independent research on improving the Disability Determination Process for the Social Security Administration's (SSA's) disability programs - Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI).

The NIH Research Education Program (R25) supports research education activities in the mission areas of the NIH.  The over-arching goal of this NIDDK R25 program is to support educational activities that enhance the diversity of the biomedical, behavioral and clinical research workforce.  This R25 program encourages Professional Societies to design and implement educational programs with the goal of recruiting of individuals from underrepresented backgrounds to pursue careers in the biomedical, behavioral, clinical, and social sciences workforce. Applications from Professional Societies supporting the NIDDK mission areas are encouraged to develop educational programs aimed at recruiting talented , fellows, and junior faculty from groups underrepresented in biomedical, behavioral, clinical, and social sciences research in the NIDDK mission areas. Professional Societies should propose an educational program based upon an educational experiment which includes a diversity management plan for the Society which should enhance the diversity of the biomedical research workforce, and the pool of individuals from under represented groups in the organization's programs and leadership.

NIJ invests in doctoral education by supporting universities that sponsor students who demonstrate the potential to successfully complete doctoral degree programs in disciplines relevant to the mission of NIJ and who are in the final stages of graduate study. Fellows receive an annual stipend of $30,000 for up to two years for completion of their dissertation and related research at their academic institution. Up to fifteen fellowships are awarded annually. Fellows must be enrolled in a doctoral program at an accredited academic institution in the United States and are selected from a range of academic disciplines, including but not limited to social work, public health, medicine, public policy, education, economics, psychology, and epidemiology.

This Programme grants 4 PhD scholarships and further financial support throughout the preparation of the PhD dissertation. It has been selected for funding by the Portuguese Agency for Science and Technology (FCT) for the next 4 editions. This is an international and inter-university programme,with the participation of the most relevant Portuguese History departments from the University of Lisbon (Institute of Social Sciences and Faculty of Letters), ISCTE- Lisbon University Institute, Portuguese Catholic University and University of Évora. Classes run in Lisbon from 15 September 2013 onwards. Courses and seminars run predominantly in English. Enrolled students receive monitoring assistance by tutors and supervisors.

The National Science Foundation's Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences (BCS), Division of Social and Economic Sciences (SES), National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES), and the SBE Office of Multidisciplinary Activities (SMA) award grants to doctoral students to improve the quality of dissertation research. These grants provide funds for items not normally available through the student's university. Additionally, these grants allow doctoral students to undertake significant data-gathering projects and to conduct field research in settings away from their campus that would not otherwise be possible. Proposals are judged on the basis of their scientific merit, including the theoretical importance of the research question and the appropriateness of the proposed data and methodology to be used in addressing the question. In an effort to improve the quality of dissertation research, many programs in both BCS and SES, the Research on Science and Technology Surveys and Statistics program within NCSES, and the Science of Science and Innovation Policy program in SMA accept doctoral dissertation improvement grant proposals. Requirements vary across programs, so proposers are advised to consult the relevant program's webpage for specific information and contact the program director if necessary.
