The funding program is designed to be interdisciplinary and to facilitate projects in which there are varied dimensions to the examination of abandoned cities. At the same time, there should be a focus on causal correlations, both with regard to specific individual cultures and spanning all cultures, and on specifics of place and time. Thus far, such places have emerged for very different reasons, including military destruction, natural disasters, epidemics, environmental pollution, economic collapse, financial speculation, mobility, migration, centralization, deindustrialization, or post-colonial change, to name but a few. The aim of the program is to describe the tangible cultures of interpretation, knowledge and perception within these different contexts. Lost Cities are part of a distinct culture of memory, for example, which serves for the negotiation of identities, the preservation of knowledge cultures, the formulation of criticism of progress, or the construction of mythical or sacral topographies as part of a veritable "ruin cult". On this basis, the focus here should not be on the question of which factors led to the city's abandonment. Rather, it is the abandoned cities themselves that are of particular interest, as well as the different forms of their interpretation, instrumentalization and coding in various cultures and time frames.

The U.S. Embassy in Amman is pleased to announce a call for proposals for the 2018 Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP). The Fund was established by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs in 2001, to help countries preserve their cultural heritage and to demonstrate U.S. respect for different cultures around the world. Floor on Amount of Individual Awards: US $10,000 per project. Ceiling on Amount of Individual Awards: $200,000 per project.

The Center for Cultural Diplomacy Studies (of the Academy for Cultural Diplomacy) offers educational and professional development opportunities for individuals interested in pursuing further education and careers in academia, diplomacy, government, and/or the private sector. The CCDS focuses in particular on exploring the  balance between hard and soft power, the process of globalization in an interdependent world, international economics & business multiculturalism, intercultural dialogue & exchange, human rights, religion, and the ability for culturally based initiatives to further mutual understanding and in turn to foster global peace and stability.

The Max-Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity, Department of Religious Diversity in Göttingen is offering The Ph.D. fellowships are for 3-4 years. The dissertation will be defended at Utrecht University. The postdoctoral fellowships are for one or two years. The research will be done in collaboration with the Center for the Study of Ethnic and Cultural Diversity in China at Minzu University in Beijing. The projects have to be on the following topics: 1. The Study of the U.S. Branch, Office of Academic Exchange Programs, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), invites proposal submissions for the design and implementation of five different Study of the U.S. Institutes for Scholars and Secondary Educators to take place over the course of five to six weeks at U.S. academic institutions beginning in June 2016, pending the availability of FY 2016 funds. These Institutes should provide multinational groups of experienced foreign university educators, scholars, teachers, and other professionals with a deeper understanding of U.S. society, culture, values, and institutions. Four of these Institutes will be for groups of 18 foreign university level faculty, focusing on the themes of Journalism and Media, U.S. Culture and Society, U.S. Foreign Policy, and U.S. National Security Policymaking, each with a total duration of six weeks.

Purpose of Small Grants: PAS Bamako invites proposals for programs that strengthen cultural ties between the U.S. and Mali through cultural and exchange programming that highlights shared values and promotes bilateral cooperation. All programs must advance a U.S. Mission goal, include an American cultural element, or have a connection with American expert/s, organization/s, or institution/s in a specific field that will promote increased understanding of U.S. policy and perspectives.

The special programme "Islam, the Modern Nation State and Transnational Movements" is aimed at researchers who, with an eye to current developments, are examining the emergence of political movements in the Islamic world at the national and/or transnational level. Historical studies are encouraged and supported, together with projects in the areas of religious, cultural or political science: What emancipatory, what modern elements does political Islam promise and integrate? What developments, what connections, what similarities in the key categories, interpretations and claims are to be drawn between pan-Arabism and pan-Islamism at the close of the 19th century and the movements of today? What historical self-descriptions are recognizable in the concepts? Via what specific ideas of communalisation can social radicalisation and mobilisation for violence be legitimised? The special programme takes a look at the dynamics between Islamic teachings, Islamism, nationalism and transnational orientations and environments. Scientific discussion of the countries and regions of the Islamic world should bring together expertise possessing regional and thematic focus in order to allow the problems associated with areas of conflict to be expounded upon, particularly with regard to global influences and processes of cultural exchange. Proposals will be supported that address the particularities and contexts of cultural and historical environments and relationships. The projects' deliverables should be able to make a contribution to diverse and expert discussions in public and political circles. Applications are invited for funding research scholarships and research projects. PhD scholarships are only granted in connection with a research project.

The Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs is seeking applications from qualified organizations to implement Culture of Lawfulness (CoL) programs in Mexico. The overall objective of the CoL program, which is funded by the Merida Initiative, is to install a sense of individual responsibility for upholding the rule of law in Mexico and support the ability of Mexico's citizens to participate in the law enforcement process. Promoting the rule of law, and reducing insecurity and corruption, requires societal support by what has come to be known as a Culture of Lawfulness. In particular, INL aims to work with civil society organizations to implement programs that support CoL principles across a variety of sectors, mainly civil society, center of moral authority, public servants and law enforcement, education, children and youth.

The Office of Citizen Exchanges, SportsUnited Division, of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) announces an open competition for the FY 2016 International Sports Programming Initiative. Sports Diplomacy programs can be an important tool for advancing foreign policy goals and connecting with audiences with whom traditional diplomacy proves challenging, including at-risk youth, women, minorities, people with disabilities, and non-English speakers. Sports Diplomacy enhances cross-cultural understanding and opens new avenues of dialogue and collaboration between individuals and nations. In support of U.S. Department of State foreign policy objectives, ECA's sports diplomacy programs create both people-to-people and institutional linkages through sport. The Office of Citizen Exchanges welcomes proposals that directly respond to the Sport for Social Change theme outlined below. The award recipient will be responsible for planning, overseeing, and/or implementing the exchanges including the administration of at least four two-way exchange programs.

The Cultural Orientation (CO) Technical Assistance Program is managed by the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration of the Department of State (hereinafter referred to as the "Bureau"). The purpose of the CO Technical Assistance Program is to strengthen linkages between overseas CO programs for refugees approved for admission to the United States and reception and placement (R&P) activities conducted upon their arrival. This program serves to complement the Reception and Placement Program, the purpose of which is to promote the effective resettlement of all persons who are admitted to the United States under the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program, including assisting refugees to achieve economic self-sufficiency through employment as quickly as possible. The Bureau will enter into one Cooperative Agreement for an initial period beginning March 15, 2018, through March 14, 2019, subject to the availability of funds. Through the Cooperative Agreement, the Bureau will provide full financial support to the selected organization, based on the proposal submitted in response to this request. This financial support may be renewable for up to two additional years based upon budget submissions on an annual basis, as long as there remains a need for the program, the organization conducting the program maintains a strong performance, and subject to the availability of funds. At the end of three years, if the need for the program continues, the Bureau will re-compete the project, and the recipient of this award may participate in that process.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The U.S. Embassy in San Jose, Costa Rica announces a Notification of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to create social and economic opportunity to strengthen citizen security, and promote government transparency to encourage a culture that resists corruption. U.S. Embassy San Jose intends to issue four awards in an amount not to exceed $900,000 in total funding. The anticipated start date for this activity is September 30, 2015, and project periods should not exceed two years. This funding will support United States Government (USG) objectives under the Central America Regional Security Initiative (CARSI). Within Central America (Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama), the United States works with partner nations to strengthen institutions to counter the effects of organized crime, uphold the rule of law, and protect human rights. Institution building is coupled with prevention projects that dissuade at-risk youth from turning to crime and gangs and community policing projects that engage local communities on citizen security issues. U.S. Embassy San Jose invites qualified U.S. non-profit/non-governmental organizations (NGOs) having a 501(c)(3) status with the IRS or overseas-based NGOs, U.S. and overseas-based public and private institutions of higher education, and public international organizations to submit proposals that include an implementation strategy to address one of the following two objectives: 1. Provide job creation opportunities for youth and women in economically-disadvantaged communities. Applicants should deal specifically with the cultural history of the British Intelligence Service between 1900 and the Second World War and should focus in particular on how the Secret Intelligence was represented in the British literature and expert discourses during the first half of the twentieth century. The thesis is incorporated into a joint project with the University of Augsburg (Prof Gassert), Leeds (Prof Ball) and the London School of Economics (Prof Neitzel), where it will be supervised.

The Library of Congress invites qualified scholars to conduct research in the John W. Kluge Center using the Library of Congress collections and resources for a period of up to eleven months. Established in 2000 through an endowment of $60 million from John W. Kluge, the Center is located in the splendid Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress. The Kluge Center furnishes attractive work and discussion space for Kluge Chair holders, for distinguished visiting scholars, and for post-doctoral Fellows supported by other private foundation gifts. Residents have easy access to the Library's specialized staff and to the intellectual community of Washington. The Kluge Center especially encourages humanistic and social science research that makes use of the Library's large and varied collections. he $1,000 CORST Essay Prize recognizes the best essay on psychoanalytically informed research in the biobehavioral sciences, social sciences, arts, and humanities. The winning essay will be presented at the APsaA National Meeting and will be reviewed for publication by The Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association.

The Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program was established by presidential initiative in 1978. The goals of the Humphrey Program are to build mutual understanding and strengthen U.S. engagement with professionals from designated countries who are well placed to address their countries' development needs in key areas, including public health, education, sustainable development, and democratic institution-building. Each year the Humphrey Program brings accomplished professionals from approximately 100 countries in North Africa and the Middle East, Sub-Saharan Africa, East Asia and the Pacific, South Asia, Central Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, Eastern Europe, and Eurasia to the United States for one academic year, preceded by U.S.-based pre-academic English instruction for participants who need it. The list of eligible U.S. embassies and Fulbright commissions (posts) that may nominate candidates for the Humphrey Program is determined each year by ECA in consultation with the Department of State's six regional bureaus. The academic-year program combines non-degree graduate study, leadership training, and opportunities for substantive professional collaboration with U.S. counterparts. U.S. embassies or binational Fulbright commissions nominate candidates for the Humphrey Program based on the candidates's professional backgrounds, academic qualifications, and leadership potential. The Humphrey Program provides these emerging leaders with an opportunity to understand U.S. society and culture and participate with U.S. colleagues in current approaches to the fields in which they work, providing a basis for on-going cooperation between U.S. citizens and their professional counterparts in other countries.

The Office of Citizen Exchanges, Youth Programs Division, of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs announces an open competition for the Youth Leadership Program with Burma. Public and private non-profit organizations meeting the provisions described in Internal Revenue Code section 26 USC 501(c)(3) may submit proposals to conduct three- to four-week U.S.-based exchange programs for teenagers and adult educators. Participants will be high-school-aged youth and adult educators. Applicants should plan to provide U.S.-based programming for 17-18 youth and 2-3 adult participants from Burma. The activities for each program will focus on civic education, leadership, diversity, and community engagement and prepare participants to conduct projects at home that serve a community need.

The Center for the Study of Southern Culture (CSSC) and the Southern Foodways Alliance at the University of Mississippi announce a $1,000 research grant to catalyze scholarship on the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the desegregation of Southern restaurants.

The DAAD/AICGS Research Fellowship Program, funded by a generous grant from the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD), is designed to bring scholars and specialists working on Germany, Europe, and/or transatlantic relations to AICGS for research stays of two months each. Fellowships include a monthly stipend of up to $4,725, depending on the seniority of the applicant; transportation to and from Washington; and office space at the Institute. Please note that the DAAD/AICGS Research Fellowship supports fellows conducting research at AICGS in Washington DC. We are unable to support research in Germany/Europe. UTSAM invites applications for up to nine-month Doctoral Residency Fellowship starting in a mutually decided time after securing the founding. We are interested in proposals that involve comparative perspectives and methods of understanding security (conceptual and practical), Islamphobia and rising far right in general, and terrorism in particular.  UTSAM is an interdisciplinary forum for innovative research on socio-economic, political, and cultural explanations and analysis of security in global perspective, with a focus on the Middle East and Europe. The main goal of the UTSAM is to encourage research on security in a comparative perspective.
