he Society for the History of Children and Youth will award two $500 grants for events that take place in 2015 to projects deemed worthy by the Outreach and Executive Committees of the SHCY. $500 grants will help defray expenses for speakers, workshops, and other scholarly events fully or partially devoted to the history of children and youth. Funded events cannot conflict with the SHCY's 8th Biennial Conference (June 24-26, 2015 in Vancouver, British Columbia).

The Myer and Rosaline Feinstein Center for American Jewish History announces a new fellowship, the Frederic Fox Memorial Summer Fellowship, to support pre- and post-doctoral researchers' use of the Philadelphia Jewish Archives Collections in the Special Collections Research Center, Temple University Libraries. While the grant is for research that primarily uses the Philadelphia Jewish Archives Collections, applicants are encouraged to explore other Temple University resources in the Special Collections Research Center as well. Grantees are required to spend a minimum of one month at the SCRC facility over the course of the year.  Graduate students or recent Ph.D. graduates are eligible to apply for a grant of $2,000.  Smaller grants may also be awarded to help defray research expenses.

The Center for Cultural Diplomacy Studies (of the Academy for Cultural Diplomacy) offers educational and professional development opportunities for individuals interested in pursuing further education and careers in academia, diplomacy, government, and/or the private sector. The CCDS focuses in particular on exploring the  balance between hard and soft power, the process of globalization in an interdependent world, international economics & business multiculturalism, intercultural dialogue & exchange, human rights, religion, and the ability for culturally based initiatives to further mutual understanding and in turn to foster global peace and stability.

The Battelle Memorial Institute-Ohio State partnership fosters programs that examine the complex relationship between science and technology and broader social and cultural issues. Strong emphasis is placed on educational and public service projects rather than pure research. Interdisciplinary collaborations within the university and collaborations with other institutions are especially encouraged. Projects that address engineering-related topics or feature collaborations between engineering and the social sciences or arts/humanities are particularly welcomed.

The Max Planck Institute for Human Development, Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and Technische Universität Berlin offer six scholarships for a PhD in History at the International Max Planck Research School for Moral Economies of Modern Societies (IMPRS Moral Economies).   The PhD program of the IMPRS Moral Economies supports research projects that investigate the values, emotions, and habits that informed and inspired modern social formations, particularly in Europe, North America, and South Asia. The relationship between modern history of emotions and the development, consolidation and transformation of morals stands at the center of the research focus.

The NEA defines these efforts as Creative Placemaking.Through Our Town, subject to the availability of funding, the National Endowment for the Arts will provide a limited number of grants for creative placemaking projects that contribute towards the livability of communities and help transform them into lively, beautiful, and resilient places with the arts at their core. Our Town prioritizes partnerships between arts organizations and government, private, and nonprofit organizations to achieve livability goals for communities.Our Town offers support for projects in two areas:* Arts Engagement, Cultural Planning, and Design Projects that represent the distinct character and quality of their communities* Projects that Build Knowledge About Creative Placemaking

Applications are invited for a partial studentship on the Buckingham University MA in Decorative Arts and Historic Interiors starting September 2014. Generously funded by the Leche Trust, the bursary, worth £7500, will cover 82% of the course fees for EU students and 55% for international students. Priority will be given to applicants with excellent academic qualifications seeking, or currently pursuing, curatorial careers in museums or the built heritage. The bursary is also open to part-time students currently working in the field, who can take the course as a form of in-service training over two years. This unique one-year MA in French and British Decorative Arts and Historic Interiors provides sounds vocational and academic training, first-hand study of furniture, silver and ceramics in the context of historic interiors, numerous study trips to museums and historic house collections, (including a study week in Paris) and placements in museums and heritage institutions.

The Center for the Study of Humanities, Culture, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Boston invites applications for a 3-4 week short-term visiting fellowship for Spring 2015. The CHCS Flaherty Visiting Fellow will pursue a research project pertaining in some way to the study of public education. The Center is particularly interested in the work of scholars exploring the evolving meaning of "public"--whether in the arena of "real" life or on the representational level (or both).  Preference will be given to projects that will have special resonance for the University of Massachusetts Boston community on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the institution, and which take a truly interdisciplinary approach to the subject matter.

The German Historical Institute (GHI) in Washington, DC, is delighted to announce eight travel grants to young scholars (four from European and four from American institutions) in the field of German Studies for the 2014 German Studies Association (GSA) conference. Preference will be given to fellows whose projects fit into the GHI's research foci. We especially invite applications from doctoral students and postdoctoral scholars who will not receive funding from their home institutions. The travel grant aims to improve the professional opportunities for outstanding, internationally-orientated humanities scholars by enabling them to participate in the 2014 GSA conference in Kansas City, MO. Recipients will have to present their work at the 2014 GSA convention. Successful applicants from European universities will receive a travel grant of 1,700.00 Euro. Successful applicants from US institutions will receive a travel grant of 1,200.00 USD.

CAS Sofia provides in-residence fellowships of two- to five- month duration to post-doctoral non-Bulgarian researchers. Junior as well as Senior scholars are invited to apply. The selected Fellows are entitled to: A monthly stipend of 700 euro (liable to 10% income tax) to cover living expenses related to the stay in Sofia. Accommodation in Sofia, comprising living quarters and working space. The Fellows will also have free access to the CAS library and electronic resources/databases. Travel allowance (400 euro) Research expenses (100 euro p.m.)

NIJ seeks applications for the W.E.B. Du Bois Fellowship for Research on Race, Gender, Culture, and Crime FY 2014. The Fellowship program seeks to advance knowledge regarding the confluence of crime, justice, and culture in various societal contexts. The Fellowship places particular emphasis on crime, violence, and the administration of criminal justice in diverse cultural contexts within the United States.

Preservation and Access Research and Development grants support projects that address major challenges in preserving or providing access to humanities collections and resources. These challenges include the need to find better ways to preserve materials of critical importance to the nation¿s cultural heritage¿from fragile artifacts and manuscripts to analog recordings and digital assets subject to technological obsolescence¿and to develop advanced modes of searching, discovering, and using such materials. Applicants should define a specific problem, devise procedures and potential solutions, and explain how they would evaluate their projects and disseminate their findings. Project results must serve the needs of a significant number of humanists.

The Strong invites researchers to use its wealth of resources on the history of play and playthings. To encourage and support scholarship, The Strong awards research fellowships three times each year. Eligible research projects must benefit from access to collections held by The Strong, including: Publications and other materials in The Strong's Brian Sutton-Smith Library and Archives of Play Artifacts from the collections of The Strong Artifacts and other materials related to the work of the International Center for the History of Electronic Games (ICHEG) The Strong invites applications for research fellowships from academic professionals, independent scholars, museum scholars, and advanced graduate students at the Masters or PhD levels. All applicants must reside outside a 50-mile radius of The Strong. Fellowships are granted for periods from one week to three months in the following amounts: $500 stipend per week for a maximum of 3 weeks $1,750 stipend per month for a maximum of 3 months The Strong provides grants in two different programs: Strong Research Fellowships for scholarly research about play in all forms and dimensions related to the context, creation, and use of playthings and other play-related artifacts, including but not limited to toys, dolls, board games, video games, and other electronic games. Mary Valentine and Andrew Cosman Research Fellowships for scholarly research about games of all types and related topics of play.

EES offers residential research scholar grants to scholars working on policy relevant projects on the following countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, and Slovenia. Projects should focus on fields in the social sciences and humanities including, but not limited to: Anthropology, History, Political Science, Slavic Languages and Literatures, and Sociology.

This project takes as its focus the documentation and dissemination of performance art from the former communist and socialist countries of Central, Eastern and Southern Europe, from the period of c. 1960-1989. Performance art in the West emerged as a self-conscious genre, and a deliberate alternative to the production of painting and sculpture for display in the gallery space. However, in Eastern Europe, artists such as Jiří Kovanda (Czechoslovakia), Andris Grīnbergs (Latvia), and Ion Grigorescu (Romania) often created performance art for a select group of friends and colleagues, and even sometimes only for themselves. If in the West, documentation was often an essential component of performance art, and necessary to exhibit the work in the gallery, in the East, the recording of performances, by video or photography, was more haphazard. At times, artists were intent on documenting their work for posterity, in the hope that someday, somewhere (outside of the totalitarian regime) it would have an audience. At others, photographs were taken simply as a record, without any thought that they would ever be seen.

The Historical Library of the Harvey Cushing/John Hay Whitney Medical Library at Yale University is pleased to announce its seventh annual Research Travel Award for use of the Historical Library. The Ferenc Gyorgyey Research Travel Grant is available to historians, medical practitioners, and other researchers who wish to use the collections of the Harvey Cushing/John Hay Whitney Medical Library. In any given year the award is up to $1,500 for one week of research.  Funds may be used for transportation, housing, food, and photographic reproductions. The award is limited to residents of the United States and Canada. 

The Society for Army Historical Research provides grants to encourage and support research undertaken by those studying at Universities. These grants of one up to £750 and two sums of up to £250 each year are open to any student world-wide currently studying at a University or similar institution. Grants are made for research that relates to the British Army or of the Land Forces of the British Empire and the Commonwealth. This includes any aspect of the Army and its activities, including reserve or auxiliary units, (Militia, Yeomanry, Fencibles, Volunteers or Home Guard) or the land forces of the Crown, or the offices and institutions which supported them. This also includes armies of the countries of the British Empire or Commonwealth including forces maintained by non-Crown bodies within the Empire, such as the Honourable East India Company, or forces allied to and forming an integral part of the land forces operating on behalf of the Crown (North America Indians, for example). The Young Scholars Research Assistantship is a new program open to 1st and 2nd year graduate students in PhD programs. It presents an extraordinary opportunity to do research with a scholar during the summer in the humanities or social science field of your choice. Participants have the option of working with a professor in their vicinity or remotely with faculty outside their region. $3000 Stipend And More! In addition to gaining more research experience early in your academic career and the chance of co-authoring an article, the Assistantship provides a $3000 stipend. Participants will also receive an invitation to attend one of our summer or fall programs that match their interests, such as the Summer Research Colloquium at Chapman University.

The 15th David Nichol Smith Seminar organizing committee is pleased to announce that they will be able to offer a limited number of travel grants to expand postgraduate participation in the 2014 'Ideas and Enlightenment' conference. These are provided through generous funding contributions from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, the Putting Periodisation to Use Group, and the Sydney Intellectual History Network at the University of Sydney. These scholarships are part of an extended postgraduate program at DNS XV, which will be supported by the newly formed DNS Graduate Caucus. We anticipate that the program will include paired mentoring between junior and senior colleagues at the conference and a professional development workshop. Those awarded scholarships travel grants would be expected to be actively involved in this program.

The Southern Baptist Historical Library and Archives, Council of Seminary Presidents, SBC, sponsors a program whereby funds are made available periodically for partial support of research in the Southern Baptist Historical Library and Archives. The grants provide a maximum of $750.
