The Smithsonian National Postal Museum (NPM) is pleased to announce, in conjunction with the Confederate Stamp Alliance (CSA), George W. Brett Memorial Scholarship, Washington 2006 World Philatelic Exhibition, National Philatelic Exhibitions of Washington D.C. (NAPEX) and the United States Stamp Society, annual scholarships for the research of postage stamps or postal history leading to publication of the research findings. The scholarships are available to PhD's, or doctoral candidates engaged in dissertation research, advanced graduate students, and/or other scholars so that the awardee may spend an uninterrupted block of time doing research in the NPM library and other Washington DC libraries on their projects and discussing their work with others. They are available for the research of postage stamps or postal history leading to publication on any topic supported by NPM collection or library, other Washington DC libraries, like the National Archives or the Library of Congress, or in State research libraries as described in the individual announcement. Interested persons, wherever resident, are invited to apply at any time with the deadline being September 1, 2014, for these scholarships for scholarly research of postage stamps or postal history. The annual scholarship, for a sum up to $2,000, shall be a contribution toward expenses for a visit(s) to Washington DC.

MA, MRes and PhD scholarships, School of History and Anthropology, Queen's University Belfast Deadline: 17 February 2014 The School of History and Anthropology, Queen's University Belfast, is one of the leading schools for historical and anthropological study in the UK and Ireland. Anthropology is listed in the UK top ten in the Guardian (2013), while History is listed in the global top 100 in the QS World Rankings (2013). The School is offering scholarships for highly qualified students beginning its MA, MRes and PhD programmes in September 2014. The range of scholarships available within the School provide for EU and international fees as well as a maintenance allowance. Deadline is April 15, 2013 for the Hanes Walton Award for Quantitative Methods Training which provides scholarships for recipients to attend the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) Summer Program in Quantitative Methods of Social Research at the University of Michigan. Scholarship recipients will receive a waiver of Program Scholar fees to attend the four and/or eight week ICPSR Summer Program. The scholarships are designed to encourage faculty and graduate students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), as well as women and minority graduate students and faculty at other institutions, to attend the Summer Program. There will be one award per category: (1) Graduate Students in PhD programs who have acquired ABD status; and (2) Tenure-Track & Non-Tenured Faculty. The National Conference of Black Political Scientists (NCOBPS) will also provide scholarship recipients with a travel stipend of up to $500.

Although humanities scholarship can be specialized, the humanities also strive to engage broad audiences in exploring subjects of general interest. They seek to deepen our understanding of the human condition as well as current conditions and contemporary problems. The Public Scholar Program aims to encourage scholarship that will be of broad interest and have lasting impact. Such scholarship might present a narrative history, tell the stories of important individuals, analyze significant texts, provide a synthesis of ideas, revive interest in a neglected subject, or examine the latest thinking on a topic. Books supported by this program must be grounded in humanities research and scholarship. They must address significant humanities themes likely to be of broad interest and must be written in a readily accessible style. Making use of primary and/or secondary sources, they should open up important and appealing subjects for a wide audience. The challenge is to make sense of a significant topic in a way that will appeal to general readers

Such scholarship might present a narrative history, tell the stories of important individuals, analyze significant texts, provide a synthesis of ideas, revive interest in a neglected subject, or examine the latest thinking on a topic. Books supported by this program must be grounded in humanities research and scholarship. They must address significant humanities themes likely to be of broad interest and must be written in a readily accessible style.

SOHA also offers two general scholarships to deserving oral historians and practitioners to attend the annual conference. Funding will include a cash award of $300 for each recipient, half of which will be disbursed prior to the conference, with the balance issued on the final day of the conference.  These awards will be applied toward hotel and travel expenses.  Free conference registration is included in the scholarship.  Additionally, a SOHA member point of contact/mentor for the conference will be provided upon request.  Students, teachers, independent oral historians, and individuals associated with nonprofit organizations are encouraged to apply. SOHA also offers up to three mini-grants, totaling up to $1500.  Funds may be used for interviewing, equipment, transcription, editing, publishing, and other oral history related expenses.  Students, teachers, and independent researchers, historical societies, archives, museums, and non-profits are encouraged to apply to conduct research on the Southwest.  First consideration is given to community-based projects concerning Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, and California, the states within the SOHA region. These grants support faculty development programs in the humanities for school teachers and for college and university teachers. NEH Summer Seminars and Institutes may be as short as two weeks or as long as five weeks. NEH Summer Seminars and Institutes ¿ extend and deepen knowledge and understanding of the humanities by focusing on significant topics and texts; ¿ contribute to the intellectual vitality and professional development of participants; ¿ build communities of inquiry and provide models of civility and excellent scholarship and teaching; and ¿ link teaching and research in the humanities. An NEH Summer Seminar or Institute may be hosted by a college, university, learned society, center for advanced study, library or other repository, cultural or professional organization, or school or school system. The host site must be suitable for the project, providing facilities for scholarship and collegial interaction. These programs are designed for a national audience of teachers. Program formats ¿ Seminar for school teachers¿sixteen participants (NEH Summer Scholars): A seminar enables sixteen participants (of whom two may be full-time graduate students who intend to pursue a K-12 teaching career) to examine an important text, study works of well-known authors, or review scholarship on a significant historical period or event. The principal goals are to deepen teachers¿ understanding of the subject at hand through reading, discussion, reflection, and writing, and to sustain their intellectual commitment to teaching. 

The Public Scholar program supports well-researched books in the humanities intended to reach a broad readership. Such scholarship might present a narrative history, tell the stories of important individuals, analyze significant texts, provide a synthesis of ideas, revive interest in a neglected subject, or examine the latest thinking on a topic. Books supported by this program must be grounded in humanities research and scholarship. They must address significant humanities themes likely to be of broad interest and must be written in a readily accessible style. By establishing the Public Scholar program, NEH enters a long-term commitment to encourage scholarship in the humanities for general audiences. In the early rounds of the competition, NEH especially welcomes applicants who are in the writing stages of their projects or who already have a commitment from a publisher.  However, the Public Scholar program also supports projects in the early stages of development.

NEH Summer Seminars and Institutes for Higher Education Faculty provide higher education faculty across the nation the opportunity to broaden and deepen their engagement with the humanities. The one- to four-week professional development programs allow participants (NEH Summer Scholars) to explore recent developments in scholarship, teaching, and/or curriculum through study of a variety of humanities topics. NEH Summer Seminars and Institutes * focus on the study and teaching of significant texts and other resources; * provide models of excellent scholarship and teaching; * contribute to the intellectual growth of the participants; and * build lasting communities of intellectual and professional collaboration. A program may take place at a college, university, learned society, center for advanced study, library or other repository, cultural or professional organization, or school or school system. The host site must provide facilities for collegial interaction and scholarship.

NEH Summer Seminars and Institutes for K-12 Educators provide school teachers across the nation the opportunity to broaden and deepen their engagement with the humanities. One- to four-week residential programs, led by scholars and K-12 professionals, allow participants (NEH Summer Scholars) to study a variety of humanities topics. Seminars and Institutes focus on the intellectual quality of humanities education and address recent developments in scholarship, teaching, and/or curriculum. NEH Summer Seminars and Institutes * focus on the study and teaching of significant texts and other resources; * provide models of excellent scholarship and teaching; * contribute to the intellectual growth of the participants; and * build lasting communities of inquiry. A program may take place at a college, university, learned society, center for advanced study, library or other repository, cultural or professional organization, or school or school system. The host site must provide facilities for collegial interaction and scholarship. The program may be held only in the United States and its territories. Seminars and Institutes are open to the entire spectrum of K-12 educators.

The Digital Humanities Start-Up Grants program awards relatively small grants to support the planning stages of innovative projects that promise to benefit the humanities. Proposals should be for the planning or initial stages of digital initiatives in any area of the humanities. Digital Humanities Start-Up Grants may involve * research that brings new approaches or documents best practices in the study of the digital humanities; * planning and developing prototypes of new digital tools for preserving, analyzing, and making accessible digital resources, including libraries' and museums' digital assets; * scholarship that focuses on the history, criticism, and philosophy of digital culture and its impact on society; * scholarship or studies that examine the philosophical or practical implications and impact of the use of emerging technologies in specific fields or disciplines of the humanities, or in interdisciplinary collaborations involving several fields or disciplines; * innovative uses of technology for public programming and education utilizing both traditional and new media; and * new digital modes of publication that facilitate the dissemination of humanities scholarship in advanced academic as well as informal or formal educational settings at all academic levels. Innovation is a hallmark of this grant category, which incorporates the "high risk/high reward" paradigm often used by funding agencies in the sciences. NEH is requesting proposals for projects that take some risks in the pursuit of innovation and excellence. We are now accepting applications for this three year programme, due to begin on 1st April 2014. The programme offers: - 9 partial scholarships (covering tuition fees and travel costs) - 1 full scholarship The programme aims to facilitate an enriching inter- and transdisciplinary research environment. As such we are inviting applications from potential and early-stage PhD candidates from a variety of disciplines. Both German and International applicants are encouraged to apply. Research proposals should be aimed at an investigation of communicative and discursive processes, within which the categories "Religion" and "Knowledge" become constructed and conventionalised. The relationship between discourses relating to religion and knowledge should be critically analysed with reference to specific contexts. The programme especially encourages a broad geographical spread of topics, as well as inter- and transdisciplinary approaches. Focus may be placed either on current academic issues or on the period of the late 18th century till present day.

The CHM master is a one year program in partnership with the Unesco Chair in Cultural Tourism and Development at the University of Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne under the direction of Prof. Fekri Hassan and Prof. Maria Gravari-Barbas. Its third edition will be offered from October the 7th 2013. Scholarships are available for candidate sending their cv, scanned copy of degree documents and motivation letter stating clearly that they apply for the scholarship!Please email your documents to heritagemaster@ufe.edu.eg before June the 23rd. It includes a variety of topics related to cultural heritage management structured in core courses and specialised courses in 1.Cultural Tourism, 2.Museum Studies, 3.Architectural and Urban Heritage. All courses and course materials are in English and address a public of graduated and professionals working in the field of heritage. Lessons are offered during three afternoons per week and often a field trip during the Saturdays is organised to combine an on site experience with the theoretical data. A summer internship has to be undertaken as integral part of the curriculum during the summer semester and at the conclusion of the courses a research master thesis will be presented in an oral examination session in front of a mixed commission of Egyptian and French experts and professors.

EES offers summer research scholarships to scholars working on policy relevant projects on East Europe. While Southeast Europe remains a primary focus, projects on Central Europe and the Baltic states are again eligible. Projects should focus on fields in the social sciences and humanities including, but not limited to: Anthropology, History, Political Science, Slavic Languages and Literatures, and Sociology. All projects should aim to highlight their potential policy relevance.

The Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute announces 2014 LEMKIN SCHOLARSHIP program for foreign students and PhD candidates. Raphael Lemkin scholarship is intended to enable foreign students, who specialize in genocide studies, especially in the Armenian Genocide, to visit Armenia for a month to conduct research in local scientific institutions and libraries.

The Woolf Institute in Cambridge, UK, has been dedicated to the provision of graduate and postgraduate study for more than 15 years. In partnership with the Cambridge Commonwealth, European and International Trust, the Woolf Institute established the Woolf Institute Cambridge Scholarships. These scholarships are intended to support outstanding research students at the University of Cambridge who have the potential to become exceptional leaders of the future.  Scholars will be selected from amongst applicants in the Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. Their research must be relevant to the focus of the Woolf Institute - the multi-disciplinary study of relations between Jews, Christians and Muslims.

As part of broader university-wide diversity and inclusion efforts, the Office of the President and the Office for the Advancement of Research and Scholarship (OARS) have issued a special call for proposals to conduct research, scholarship, or creative activities in the areas of social justice, human rights, diversity, and inclusion. Proposals may be submitted in any of these areas, but must address a scholarly question that will lead to testable objectives or measurable outcomes.

Students may apply to TECHNE for a doctoral award by submitting a TECHNE  application through Royal Holloway. The deadline for applications is Wednesday 19 February 2014. If you are interested in applying for a TECHNE award, the first step is to speak to a prospective supervisor or the Director of Graduate Studies in the relevant department. It is not possible to submit an application directly to TECHNE: you must apply through one of the member universities. Overseas students are not eligible for AHRC awards, and EU students are eligible for fees only. Two types of studentships are available: Doctoral Awards - circa 35 awards per annum for students who are applying to undertake PhD study.  This includes those who are applying initially as an MPhil student with the intention to upgrade to PhD study. Rates for 2014/15 are  £15,863 for maintenance and £3,996 for fees (three years full-time or part-time equivalen for five years). Students who apply for a TECHNE award will be considered automatically for a College Scholarship. Research Preparation Masters Studentships Three highly competitive studentships are avalable for students who need to develop expertise in a new subject area or to acquire acadmic skills before undertaking a doctorate. Particular consideration will be given to those with substantial experience of practice who need to acquire theoretical skills.  NB it will be necessary to re-apply for a doctoral award.  Rates for 2014/15 are £11,681  for maintenance and £3,796 for fees (full time).  Any difference between College fees and the AHRC fees award is waived. If you think you may be eligible please speak to the Director of Graduate Studies in the relevant department.

The Max Planck Institute for Human Development, Freie Universität Berlin, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, and Technische Universität Berlin offer six scholarships for a PhD in History at the International Max Planck Research School for Moral Economies of Modern Societies (IMPRS Moral Economies).   The PhD program of the IMPRS Moral Economies supports research projects that investigate the values, emotions, and habits that informed and inspired modern social formations, particularly in Europe, North America, and South Asia. The relationship between modern history of emotions and the development, consolidation and transformation of morals stands at the center of the research focus.
