The Dolph Briscoe Center for American History at the University of Texas at Austin announces the 2013-2014 William and Madeline Welder Smith Research Travel Award. Five fellowships of up to $1,000.00 each will be given, and the aid may be used any time from September 1, 2013 to August 31, 2014. Through the Smith Travel Award, the Briscoe Center for American History will assist masters, doctoral, and post-doctoral students with costs associated with travel to Austin, Texas. The award is intended for students who need to conduct in-depth research in the holdings of the Briscoe Center and who reside outside of the Austin metropolitan area.

Grants support the development and implementation of an integrated set of courses and student engagement activities focusing on significant humanities content. A common topic, theme, or compelling issue or question must link the courses and activities. The linked courses (a minimum of three) may fulfill general education or core curriculum requirements but could also be designed primarily for students in a particular major or course of study. The Humanities Connections program gives special encouragement to projects that foster collaboration between humanities faculty and their counterparts in the social and natural sciences and pre-service or professional programs in business, engineering, health sciences, law, computer science, and other non-humanities fields.

Together with University Advancement, the Office for the Advancement of Research & Scholarship (OARS) is rolling out an new crowdfunding platform called HawksNest. Through HawksNest, alumni, family, and friends of the university can directly support the research, scholarship, and service projects of Miami University students, faculty, and staff. This is how HawksNest works: * Any Miami University student, faculty, or staff member may complete an online application to have a project considered for funding. * An internal review team assesses applications and posts approved projects on HawksNest for a maximum of 45 days. * Potential donors visit the site to learn about and pledge funds to approved projects. * Once a funding goal has been met, the project can begin! * Project managers use the site to keep donors up-to-date with information on the project's progress.

The Posen Family Foundation has announced a call for applications for the 2019-21 cohort of Posen Society of Fellows, a program that supports doctoral students in modern Jewish history and culture. Designed to provide early-career support, the two-year fellowships include opportunities to participate in public engagement events and attend annual gatherings of noted academics and writers. All applicants should have completed their comprehensive exams and have their dissertation prospectus approved before January 15 of the first year for which they apply. The foundation is particularly interested in projects that would speak to a wider public beyond the academy, and applications should include an explanation for how the dissertation addresses issues of relevance to such an audience. Each fellow will receive a total of $40,000 over two years. Eligible scholars should be completing a doctoral dissertation on a topic related to modern Jewish history or culture. Fellowships are open to doctoral students and writers of all religions and nationalities. Application forms will be made available on November 10. The Association of Historians of American Art (AHAA) offers two grants of $500 each to defray College Art Association conference expenses, including transportation, housing, and registration fees, for presenting members. The first grant is for an ABD graduate student in American art history who is currently enrolled in a graduate program and will travel to CAA's annual conference to appear on the meeting program. The second grant is to support a contingent faculty member or museum staff person whose work engages with the art of the United States, does not have access to travel funds from their institution of employment, and will travel to CAA's annual conference to appear on the meeting program. Applications for Travel Grants are due by December 1 and must include a short cv and letter of interest. The letter should indicate which award is being applied for - Professional or Graduate Student - and must include the applicant's paper and session title as they appear on the CAA program. For the Professional award, applicants should also address their institutional affiliation. The two winners of the AHAA Travel Grant must be members of AHAA at the time of their application. All qualified candidates will be entered into a lottery and the winners selected at random. Applicants will be notified via email by December 15. The participation is open for young researchers, Ph.D. candidates and MA students. The organizing committee will award ten grants, covering the expenses for board and lodging. Travel expenses up to 200€ will also be covered. Applications must be sent per e-mail to: segreteria.isig@fbk.eu. The deadline is the 20th of October 2017. Applications must include an academic curriculum and a letter of presentation by an academic tutor or a renowned scholar stating the relevance of the applicants' research. The working languages of the conference will be Italian, German and English. Attendance to all the sessions is compulsory for grant recipients. 20th Century Japan Research Award for 2017-2018 The Nathan and Jeanette Miller Center for Historical Studies and the University of Maryland Libraries invite applications for two $1,500 grants to support research in the library's Gordon W. Prange Collection and East Asia Collection on topics related to the period of the Allied Occupation of Japan and its aftermath, 1945-1960. Holders of a Ph.D. or an equivalent degree are eligible to apply, as are graduate students who have completed all requirements for the doctorate except the dissertation. The competition is open to scholars in all parts of the world and from any discipline, but historical topics are preferred. University of Maryland faculty, staff, and students may not apply. More information can be found on the Prange Collection website. The application deadline is November 17, 2017. The grant must be used by October 26, 2018. Grant funds will be disbursed in the form of reimbursement for travel, lodging, meals, reproductions, and related research expenses. Such costs as computers or software are not eligible.

Boren Awards fund U.S. undergraduate and graduate language study and research abroad in world regions critical to U.S. national interests (including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East). The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded. The Boren Scholarships provide up to $20,000 for undergraduate students for language‐focused study abroad. The Boren Fellowships provide up to $30,000 for graduate students to fund language study, graduate‐level research, and academic internships abroad. The U.S. Embassy, Bucharest invites non-profit Romanian organizations and institutions, with activity and experience in the field of education and civic engagement, and with no political affiliations, to apply for a grant of up to $90,000 to develop a curriculum on the history of communism. The project should be designed to train a group of ten trainers - selected through competition - to teach based on this curriculum, and organize two one-week summer camps for 75 undergraduate university students each from all fields of study and representing all parts of Romania, to learn about the history of communism. The program should be planned for a 15-month period, to start in October 2019, include one event in December 2019, such as a two-day seminar. A summer camp should be planned to take place before the end of August 2020; the program must include follow-up activities to be conducted by each of the ten trainers and 150 students by the end of November 2020.

Historically, grants through the program have supported research projects on a range of topics and disciplines, including education, psychology, sociology, economics, history, and anthropology; they also employ a wide range of research methods. Examples of recently funded projects include an experimental study of how college students use visual representations in solving math problems; a study exploring the process of racial and rural identity formation among African American high-school students who attend de facto segregated schools in the rural South; and a mixed-methods study focusing on the different types of knowledge novice and experienced teachers draw on in teaching for reading comprehension.

The National Historical Publications and Records Commission seeks projects that encourage public engagement with historical records, including the development of new tools that enable people to engage online. The NHPRC is looking for projects that create models and technologies that other institutions can freely adopt. In general, collaborations between archivists, documentary editors, historians, educators, and/or community-based individuals are more likely to create a competitive proposal. Projects that focus on innovative methods to introduce primary source materials and how to use them in multiple locations also are more likely to create a competitive proposal. Projects might create and develop programs to engage people in the study and use of historical records for institutional, educational or personal reasons. For example, an applicant can: * Enlist volunteer "citizen archivists" in projects to accelerate access to historical records, especially those online. This may include, but is not limited to, efforts to identify, tag, transcribe, annotate, or otherwise enhance digitized historical records. * Develop educational programs for K-12 students, undergraduate classes, or community members that encourage them to engage with historical records already in repositories or that are collected as part of the project. * Collect primary source material from people through public gatherings and sponsor discussions or websites about the results. * Use historical records in artistic endeavors. This could include K-12 students, undergraduate classes, or community members.

This Programme grants 4 PhD scholarships and further financial support throughout the preparation of the PhD dissertation. It has been selected for funding by the Portuguese Agency for Science and Technology (FCT) for the next 4 editions. This is an international and inter-university programme,with the participation of the most relevant Portuguese History departments from the University of Lisbon (Institute of Social Sciences and Faculty of Letters), ISCTE- Lisbon University Institute, Portuguese Catholic University and University of Évora. Classes run in Lisbon from 15 September 2013 onwards. Courses and seminars run predominantly in English. Enrolled students receive monitoring assistance by tutors and supervisors.

THEN/HiER supports projects related to history teaching and learning in Canada initiated, organized, and carried out by graduate students in history and history education. We will consider requests for support up to a maximum of $2,500. The next deadline for submissions is May 1, 2013.

The Filson fellowships and internships encourage the scholarly use of our nationally significant collections by providing support for travel and lodging. Internships provide practical experience in collections management and research for graduate students. Fellows as well as interns are expected to be in continuous residence at The Filson. Application deadlines for all fellowships and internships are October 15th and February 15th each year (or the Monday following the 15th if it falls on a Saturday or Sunday). Applications are reviewed two times a year. The Society's collections are especially strong for the frontier, antebellum, and Civil War eras of Kentucky history. The fellowships are designed to encourage research in all aspects of the history of Kentucky and the regions of the Ohio Valley and the Upper South. Applicants should indicate how The Filson's collections are relevant to their research topics and will have the opportunity to present the results of their research to scholars and the general public as appropriate. The Filson anticipates that fellows will publicize the results of their research in Ohio Valley History, a peer-reviewed journal published jointly by The Filson, the Cincinnati Museum Center, and the University of Cincinnati.

Named for Benjamin Quarles and Nathan Huggins, two outstanding historians of the African American past, the Huggins-Quarles Award is given annually by the Organization of American Historians to one or two graduate students of color to assist them with expenses related to travel to research collections for the completion of the Ph.D. dissertation. These awards were established to promote greater diversity in the historical profession.

The Smithsonian National Postal Museum (NPM) is pleased to announce, in conjunction with the Confederate Stamp Alliance (CSA), George W. Brett Memorial Scholarship, Washington 2006 World Philatelic Exhibition, National Philatelic Exhibitions of Washington D.C. (NAPEX) and the United States Stamp Society, annual scholarships for the research of postage stamps or postal history leading to publication of the research findings. The scholarships are available to PhD's, or doctoral candidates engaged in dissertation research, advanced graduate students, and/or other scholars so that the awardee may spend an uninterrupted block of time doing research in the NPM library and other Washington DC libraries on their projects and discussing their work with others. They are available for the research of postage stamps or postal history leading to publication on any topic supported by NPM collection or library, other Washington DC libraries, like the National Archives or the Library of Congress, or in State research libraries as described in the individual announcement. Interested persons, wherever resident, are invited to apply at any time with the deadline being September 1, 2014, for these scholarships for scholarly research of postage stamps or postal history.
