There are 5.4 million individuals who self-identify as American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) in the US, and there are 567 federally registered tribes. While characterized by many strengths and resiliencies, as a whole, AI/AN populations experience significant disparities compared to the general population across a range of health conditions and outcomes, including infant mortality, alcohol-related mortality, substance abuse, unintentional injury, homicide, suicide, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, obesity, chronic kidney disease, asthma, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, selected cancers, and other chronic diseases. Premature death rates, while decreasing in other US racial/ethnic minority populations over the past 15 years, are increasing among AI/AN populations. However, the examination of data on AI/AN populations in aggregate may obscure the significant heterogeneity within the AI/AN population due to tribal affiliation, geographic region, and other factors. For example, gastric cancers affect AI/AN populations in different parts of the country at different rates ranging from 6.1/100,00 in the Eastern US to 24.5/100,000 in Alaska. At the same time, national survey and epidemiological studies often do not report data on AI/AN populations because the numbers are too small or AI/AN individuals are folded into the highly heterogeneous "Other" category, thus not available to interpret any health outcomes specific for AI/AN populations. For these reasons, there is a critical need to build a more comprehensive evidence base regarding the health of AI/AN populations.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to solicit applications to support screening of target-based pharmaceutical libraries to identify candidate therapeutics against select eukaryotic pathogens and subsequent preclinical development activities.

The Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative is aimed at revolutionizing neuroscience through development and application of innovative technologies to map neural circuits, monitor and modulate their activity, and understand how they contribute to thoughts, sensations, emotions and behavior. NIH has issued a variety of Funding Opportunity Announcements (FOAs) that will support projects that apply technologies to understand neural circuit function in the context of specific circuits, resulting in a diverse portfolio of research into the fundamental biology of nervous system function. The purpose of this announcement is to notify the research community that NIH welcomes BRAIN Initiative applications targeting central nervous system nociceptive and pain circuits, as appropriate to the goals and requirements of specific BRAIN Initiative FOAs. Pain conditions represent an important public health problem and NIH continues to support research into pain pathologies through normal Institute and Center appropriations. However, pain and nociception are also components of normal nervous system function, and the BRAIN Initiative is committed to understanding pain circuits along with brain circuits underlying other sensory, motor, cognitive and emotional functions. It is expected that the unique opportunities of the BRAIN Initiative will enable production of detailed maps of pain circuits, and the adoption of powerful new tools for monitoring and modulating pain circuit activity, leading to significant advances in the understanding of pain and nociception. Office of Research on Women's Health (ORWH) is updating the trans-NIH Strategic Plan for Women's Health Research. NIH is publishing this Notice to solicit input from the basic, clinical and translational scientists as well as advocacy and patient communities on topics under consideration for the next strategic plan. ORWH was established in the Office of the NIH Director by the Public Health Service Act to (a) identify projects and multidisciplinary research related to women's health; (b) encourage research on sex differences and promote coordination among research entities; (c) assist NIH efforts to include women as subjects in clinical research; and (d) develop opportunities and support for women in biomedical careers. These efforts will continue to be part of the office's core mission. ORWH is tasked with the development of a trans-NIH strategic plan for women's health research that promotes allocation of NIH resources for conducting and supporting these research efforts across NIH Institutes and Centers.This Request for Information (RFI) seeks feedback on 3 cross-cutting themes and goals under consideration for the next trans-NIH strategic plan for women's health research. These themes will stimulate new research areas, priorities, and approaches to help put science to work for the health of women.

The American Psychological Foundation provides financial support for innovative research and programs that enhance the power of psychology to elevate the human condition and advance human potential, both today and for generations to come. As part of this mission, APF is accepting applications for its APF Trauma Psychology Grant. Through the annual program, a single grant of up to $3,000 will be awarded in support innovative work aimed at alleviating trauma. To be eligible, applicants must be an early-career psychologist (no more than ten years postdoctoral); be affiliated with a nonprofit charitable, educational, or scientific institution, or governmental entity operating exclusively for charitable and educational purposes; have a demonstrated knowledge of trauma and trauma research; have demonstrated competence and capacity to execute the proposed work; and, if human participants are involved, have IRB approval from his/her host institution before funding can be awarded.

The When Everyone Survives Foundation was founded to advance cures and treatment for leukemia through support for innovative research. To that end, the foundation has issued its 2018 Request for Proposals for leukemia research. One-year grants of up to $50,000 will be awarded in support of innovative laboratory, translational, or clinical research related to acute leukemia. Renewal of initial research support may be considered for one or more additional years based on productivity. New and established investigators are eligible to apply.

Founded in 1996, the Marsha Rivkin Center for Ovarian Cancer Research supports public early detection screening for ovarian cancer, produces nationally and internationally attended research symposia, and provides funding for innovative ovarian cancer research and scholar grants to up-and-coming investigators. The center is accepting applications for pilot study projects in ovarian cancer research. Through the center's Pilot Study Program, approximately ten one-year grants of $75,000 will be awarded to support investigator-initiated projects in all areas of ovarian cancer research. Projects designed to analyze data from already funded clinical trials also will be considered. Priority will be given to proposals that are innovative, multi-disciplinary, and likely to lead to the submission of grant applications for independently funded investigations. Investigators at all levels are encouraged to apply.

Founded in 1972, the Tourette Association of America has emerged as the premier national nonprofit organization working to make life better for all people affected by Tourette and tic disorders. The association advances its work by raising public awareness and fostering social acceptance; working to advance scientific understanding, treatment options, and care; educating professionals to better serve the needs of children, adults, and families challenged by Tourette and tic disorders; advocating for public policies and services that promote positive school, work, and social environments; providing help, hope, and a supportive community across the nation; and empowering its community to deal with the complexities of this spectrum of disorders. To that end, grants of up to $150,000 over two years will be awarded for basic and clinical studies related to any aspect of Tourette syndrome. To be eligible, investigators are required to have an advanced degree such as a PhD, MD, or equivalent or be an allied professional with an advanced degree in a related field. Investigators from nonprofit and for-profit organizations are eligible to apply. Pre-proposals must be received no later than November 1, 2017. Upon review, selected applicants will be invited to submit a full application by February 15, 2018.

The Epilepsy Foundation has announced its seventh annual epilepsy "Shark Tank" competition for the most innovative ideas in epilepsy and seizure treatment and care. Selected finalists will receive international recognition and compete for grants totaling $150,000 to support the development and commercialization of important new products, technologies, or therapeutic concepts. As many as six finalists will be selected to present at the 2018 Epilepsy Pipeline Conference (San Francisco, February 22-23, 2018). Each presenter will have five minutes to present the concept, followed by five minutes of questioning. The event will feature live voting among audience members and a panel of judges (Sharks) representative of industry, advocacy, investors, and the research and medical communities. The winning project(s) deemed to be the most innovative will be announced at the conclusion of the competition. To be eligible, applicants must demonstrate an ability to move the proposed plan to completion, showing how the prize can accelerate any step along the path to market. Inventors who submitted ideas in previous Shark Tank competitions are encouraged to re-submit their ideas if substantial progress has been made.

The American Association for Cancer Research is accepting applications for its AACR NextGen Grants for Transformative Cancer Research program. The annual program is designed to stimulate highly innovative research from young investigators. Three-year grants of up to $450,000 will be awarded in support of creative, paradigm-shifting cancer research that might not be funded through conventional channels. The funds are intended to support expenses related to the research project, which may include salary and benefits of the grant recipient, postdoctoral or clinical research fellows, graduate students (including tuition costs), and research assistants; research/laboratory supplies and equipment; travel applicable to the research project; publication charges for manuscripts that pertain directly to the funded project; and other research expenses and indirect costs. Research projects must represent a highly innovative approach to a major contemporary challenge in cancer research. The research, which can be in any area of basic, translational or clinical science, must have the potential to lead to groundbreaking discoveries in the field and transform our understanding of the tumorigenesis process and/or ability to treat, detect, or prevent cancer. To be eligible, applicants must have a doctoral degree in a related field and not currently be a candidate for a further doctoral degree. In addition, at the start of the grant term on July 1, 2018, applicants must hold a tenure-eligible appointment at the level of assistant professor; have held this appointment for no more than three years; and work at an academic, medical, or research institution anywhere in the world. AACR membership is required.

This initiative will support exploratory projects that exploit HIV or host genomic or nucleomic information to understand HIV latency in individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs).

The FY17 HRRP TRA mechanism is being offered in this first year of the program to support preclinical translational research that will accelerate the movement of promising initiatives relevant to hearing restoration into clinical applications. The ultimate goal of translational research is to move an observation forward into clinical application and accelerate the clinical introduction of healthcare products, technologies, or practice guidelines. Observations that drive a research idea may be derived from a laboratory discovery, population-based studies, or a clinician's first-hand knowledge of patients and anecdotal data. However, Principal Investigators (PIs) should not view translational research as a one-way continuum from bench to bedside. The research plan should involve a reciprocal flow of ideas and information between basic and clinical science.

The FY17 HRRP FRA is intended to support functional hearing restoration research that develops and validates assessment techniques and treatment methods using patient-centric outcomes to identify potential predictive indicators for successful treatment of individuals living with functional auditory system deficits. The research in this area should result in refined diagnostic tools and improved evaluation of the effectiveness of therapeutic approaches. Applications involving multidisciplinary collaborations among academia, industry, the military Services, the VA, and other Federal Government agencies are highly encouraged. Under this award mechanism, research may support correlative or observational studies that are associated with an ongoing or completed clinical trial.

The NIH Research Education Program (R25) supports research education activities in the mission areas of the NIH.  The over-arching goal of this NIDDK R25 program is to support educational activities that enhance the diversity of the biomedical, behavioral and clinical research workforce.  This R25 program encourages Professional Societies to design and implement educational programs with the goal of recruiting of individuals from underrepresented backgrounds to pursue careers in the biomedical, behavioral, clinical, and social sciences workforce. Applications from Professional Societies supporting the NIDDK mission areas are encouraged to develop educational programs aimed at recruiting talented , fellows, and junior faculty from groups underrepresented in biomedical, behavioral, clinical, and social sciences research in the NIDDK mission areas. Professional Societies should propose an educational program based upon an educational experiment which includes a diversity management plan for the Society which should enhance the diversity of the biomedical research workforce, and the pool of individuals from under represented groups in the organization's programs and leadership.

The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to allow for investigator initiated research that will further the understanding of potential risk factors for ALS, while supporting the National ALS Registry's mission.

Improved Quality and Sustainability of Medication Assisted Treatment in Ukraine under the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

NHGRI invites applications for research developing comparative approaches that can be used to understand genome structure and function and the relationship between genomic features and phenotypes. This program supports studies that enable the use of a diverse array of species to advance our ability to understand basic biological processes related to human health and disease, as well as studies that develop novel analytical tools and resources for the comparative genomics research community.

The purpose of this NOFO is to:Support government of SA in ensuring provision of high-quality, high-volume, cost-efficient VMMC services to males aged 15-34 through implementation of innovative demand creation strategies;Ensure that VMMC services are integrated and implemented as a package of comprehensive HIV prevention;To coordinate the forecasting, procurement, QA, distribution and storage of VMMC surgical kits and commodities; andSupport the transition of direct VMMC service delivery to the NDoH facilities according to guidance provided by PEPFAR in SA.

This notice solicits applications for the Health Center Program's Service Area Competition (SAC). The Health Center Program supports public and private nonprofit community-based and patient-directed organizations that provide primary health care services to the Nation's medically underserved. The purpose of the SAC NOFO is to ensure continued access to affordable, quality primary health care services for communities and vulnerable populations currently served by the Health Center Program. This NOFO details the SAC eligibility requirements, review criteria, and awarding factors for organizations seeking funding for operational support to provide primary health care services to an announced service area under the Health Center Program. For the purposes of this document, the term "health center" encompasses Health Center Program award recipients funded under the following subsections: Community Health Center (CHC - section 330(e)), Migrant Health Center (MHC - section 330(g)), Health Care for the Homeless (HCH - section 330(h)), and/or Public Housing Primary Care (PHPC - section 330(i)).
