The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute invites cooperative agreement (U01) applications to investigate and define cellular and molecular events, including host genetic factors, underlying the pathogenesis of HIV-associated lung diseases (e.g., COPD and pulmonary hypertension). Biospecimens and clinical data from HIV-infected patients and controls should be utilized. Clinical translation is encouraged to the extent that it is possible. Both independent (site-specific) and collaborative research with other groups funded by this FOA will be conducted under this program. The goals are to identify disease sub-phenotypes, potential biomarkers to predict risk, progression, and outcome, and molecular targets to help design therapeutic interventions.

The Osler Library of the History of Medicine of McGill University sponsors a travel grant designed to assist scholars who need to travel and establish temporary residence in Montreal in order to use the resources of the Library. The Library has the largest collection of rare and secondary material in medical history in Canada, manuscripts and archives of such notables as Sir William Osler, Wilder Penfield, Norman Bethune and Maude Abbott, medical ephemera and 2,500 medical prints. Our monographic, serials and ephemera holdings are listed in the McGill Library Catalogue. The grant is available to historians, physicians, graduate students and others interested in medical history. It carries an award of $1,500 (Canadian), and must be held for 2-4 weeks during calendar year 2012. $2,000 will be made available to those requiring 4 weeks to complete their research.

The Paralyzed Veterans of America Education Foundation, a grantmaking organization of Paralyzed Veterans of America, seeks to fund innovative educational projects that enhance the quality of life of individuals with spinal cord injury or disease (SCI/D) and/or that increase the knowledge and effectiveness of health professionals in the SCI/D community. The foundation generally supports five types of projects: 1) Consumer, caregiver, and community education demonstration projects that seek to improve the health, independence, and quality of life of individuals with spinal cord injury or disease; 2) Professional development and education programs that improve the knowledge and competencies of professionals providing health care and related services to the SCI/D community, or fellowship/traineeship programs for professionals providing health care and related services to the SCI/D community; 3) Research utilization and dissemination projects that translate research findings into practice; 4) Assistive technology demonstration projects that improve the identification, selection, and use of assistive devices by people with SCI/D; and 5) Conferences and symposia designed to provide education and opportunities for collaboration among members of the SCI/D community.

The primary purpose of this funding opportunity is to create a national program for the exposure of undergraduate students, including those from underrepresented racial and ethnic minority populations, to public health and biomedical sciences.

Developed game applications must be designed to encourage participants to compete or collaborate to improve personal health while simultaneously contributing to the overarching goal of maximizing their community's health. The winner will receive $100,000. The second- and third-place winners will receive $50,000 and $25,000, respectively.

The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to provide support for New Investigators from backgrounds nationally underrepresented in biomedical research to conduct small research projects in the scientific mission areas of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS). The scientific mission areas of the Institutes and Office are: NIDDK -diabetes, endocrinology, metabolism, digestive diseases, hepatology, obesity, nutrition, kidney, urology, or hematology; NIMH factors contributing to mental disorders, the trajectories of mental disorders, pre-emption and treatment of mental disorders, identify and improve interventions for mental illness; and ODS all types of research in which the primary emphasis is the investigation of dietary supplements and/or their ingredients.

This Administrative Supplement Program intends to support gene function studies in collaboration with the NIH Undiagnosed Diseases Program (UDP) to investigate the underlying genetics, biochemistry and pathophysiology of newly diagnosed diseases identified through the UDP. In recent years, gene function studies combined with genetic and genomic analyses and metabolic studies have greatly improved diagnoses of these very rare diseases and advanced scientific knowledge of the underlying pathogenesis. This initiative is funded through the NIH Common Fund, which supports cross-cutting programs that are expected to have exceptionally high impact.

The purpose of this award is to introduce students to rheumatology- related health care by supporting full- time research by a graduate student in the broad area of rheumatic disease. Eligibility Only students enrolled in an accredited graduate school are eligible. Preceptors are responsible for selecting student applicants and must be members of ARHP or ACR. The purpose of this funding opportunity is to facilitate research to describe social contact and mixing patterns in the U.S. population. Results from this research will improve contact rate estimation and parameterization for infectious disease transmission models that can be used to evaluate infectious disease prevention and control strategies.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to encourage applications for projects that bridge biological mechanism to population level scales. By incorporating insights and data from one end of the cancer research spectrum into the framework of the other, projects should be able to cross-validate data gathered at different scales, and explore links between basic biology, population science, and potential health applications in treatment, prevention, diagnosis, and/or screening. Proposed projects should pose a challenging cancer research question that can be addressed by connecting these two ends of the research spectrum that would be difficult to address or explain through biological or epidemiological investigation alone. Only a single cohesive project integrating aspects from these two areas is allowed in each application.

The purpose of the Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (IMSD) Program is to develop the pool of a diverse group of highly trained undergraduate and graduate students who go on to research careers and will be available to participate in NIH-funded research. The program provides institutional grants to research-intensive institutions that propose well-integrated developmental activities designed to increase students' academic preparation and skills that are critical to the completion of the Ph.D. degree in biomedical and behavioral sciences.

The purposes of the NCIPC extramural violence prevention research program are to: Build the scientific base for the prevention of violence by helping to expand and advance our understanding of the primary prevention of interpersonal and self-directed violence. Encourage professionals from a wide spectrum of disciplines of epidemiology, behavioral and social sciences, medicine, biostatistics, public health, health economics, law, and criminal justice to perform research in order to prevent violence more effectively. Encourage investigators to propose research that involves the development and testing of primary prevention strategies as well as research on methods to enhance the adoption and maintenance of effective strategies among individuals, organizations, or communities.

This program will provide training for public-health professionals and students in basic and applied public-health science, and public-health program planning, implementation and evaluation on a regional level; 2. Strengthen regional, national and local capacity in Central America to conduct public-health science; to plan, implement and evaluate public-health programs and surveillance systems; and to develop interventions; 3. Support national and regional disease prevention, detection, and control efforts in Central America, including rapid response to public health emergencies; and 4. Incorporate lessons learned from evaluations and assessments of programs to control and eradicate diseases in Guatemala and the Central America Region, and ensure sharing of expertise with public-health partners in the Region.

The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM) is a Presidential award established by the White House in 1995. The purpose of the award is to recognize U.S. citizens or permanent residents and U.S. organizations that have demonstrated excellence in mentoring individuals from groups that are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education and workforce. Groups that are underrepresented in STEM include women, people with disabilities, underrepresented racial and ethnic minorities, as well as individuals from low socio-economic backgrounds and some geographic regions such as urban and rural areas. The PAESMEM program is administered by the National Science Foundation (NSF) on behalf of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP).
