The NIH Research Education Program (R25) supports research education activities in the mission areas of the NIH. The over-arching goal of this NIAAA/NIDA R25 program is to support educational activities that foster a better understanding of biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research on alcohol and other substance use disorders and their implications. To accomplish the stated over-arching goal, this FOA will support creative educational activities with a primary focus on Outreach. Specifically, this FOA will support projects designed to engage practicing health care professionals in education about current and emerging knowledge derived from scientific research on the neurobiology, epidemiology, prevention, and/or treatment of alcohol and other substance use disorders and related health conditions.

To accomplish the stated over-arching goal, this FOA will support creative educational activities with a primary focus on Courses for Skills Development. This FOA encourages applications from institutions that propose to establish new or to enhance existing team-based design courses or programs in undergraduate biomedical engineering departments or other degree-granting programs with biomedical engineering tracks/minors. This FOA targets undergraduate students. While current best practices such as multidisciplinary/interdisciplinary education, introduction to the regulatory pathway and other issues related to the commercialization of medical devices, and clinical immersion remain encouraged components of a strong BME program, this FOA also challenges institutions to propose other novel, innovative and/or ground-breaking activities that can form the basis of the next generation of biomedical engineering design education.

The Early Investigator Research Award supports NF-focused research opportunities for individuals in the early stages of their careers, under the guidance of a designated Mentor. This opportunity allows for early-stage investigators to develop a research project, investigate a problem or question in NF research, and further their intellectual development as an NF researcher of the future. The postdoctoral investigator is considered the Principal Investigator (PI) of the application and must exhibit strong potential for, and commitment to, pursuing a career as an investigator at the forefront of NF research; however, the PI is not required to have previous NF research experience. Applications must include at least one Mentor, appropriate to the proposed research project, who has experience in NF research and mentoring as demonstrated by a record of active funding, recent publications, and successful mentorship. The primary Mentor can be a junior faculty member, in which case the PI is encouraged to include a secondary Mentor with a more robust track record in NF research and mentorship. The selected Mentor(s) should also demonstrate a clear commitment to the development of the PI toward independence as an NF researcher.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites applications from institutions/organizations that propose to establish core centers that are part of an integrated and existing program of nutrition and/or obesity research. The Nutrition Obesity Research Centers (NORC) program is designed to support and enhance the national research effort in nutrition and obesity. NORCs support three primary research-related activities: Research Core services, a Pilot and Feasibility (P and F) program, and an Enrichment program. All activities pursued by Nutrition Obesity Research Centers are designed to enhance the efficiency, productivity, effectiveness and multidisciplinary nature of research in nutrition and obesity. The NIDDK Nutrition Obesity Research Centers program consists of 12 Centers, each located at outstanding research institutions with documented programs of excellence in nutrition and/or obesity research.

The Coordination Center for the Models of Infectious Disease Agent Study (MIDAS) program will serve as a hub for collaboration, testing and dissemination of research products from the network of MIDAS investigators. The Coordination Center will also serve as the primary repository for MIDAS related datasets, models and software. The Coordination Center will maintain, promote and maximize utility and use of the shared MIDAS resources. In addition, the Program Director(s)/Principal Investigator(s) of the Coordination Center will proactively develop collaborative activities and training opportunities intended to enhance the utility of MIDAS resources and to improve the training experiences for members of the MIDAS network and their graduate students and postdoctoral researchers. Limited funding will also be provided to allow the Coordination Center to conduct impactful research on the evaluation and meta-analysis of existing modeling resources for the study of infectious disease spread and intervention.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages applications from institutions/organizations proposing the development of targeted mass spectrometric assays (e.g. Multiple Reaction Monitoring) for proteins and peptides of primary interest to the type 1 diabetes research community (e.g. glucagon, somatostatin, C-peptide, insulin). The proposed assays should be highly reproducible, easily transferable to other laboratories, easy to multiplex, and validated in human plasma or serum.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites cooperative agreement applications that will contribute to a higher resolution understanding of the physical and functional organization of the human islet tissue environment by describing the composition (cellular and molecular) and function of important components of the pancreatic islet and peri-islet tissue architecture, the cell-cell relationships and means of communications used by cell types and cell subtypes within the pancreatic tissue ecosystem, and/or the contribution of adjacent (including acinar, ductal, lymphatic) and neighboring (intestinal, mesenteric and adipose) tissues to islet cell function and dysfunction. Successful projects will integrate the Human Pancreas Analysis Consortium (HPAC), that will consist of the research teams funded in response to this FOA with the Human Pancreas Analysis Program (HPAP), a resource-generation program that was funded in 2016 in response to RFA-DK-15-027. HPAC will become the fifth consortium of the Human Islet Research Network (HIRN, https://hirnetwork.org/ ). HIRN's overall mission is to support innovative and collaborative translational research to understand how human beta cells are lost in T1D, and to find innovative strategies to protect and replace functional beta cell mass in humans. This FOA will only support studies with a primary focus on increasing our understanding of human tissue structure and function, and human disease biology (as opposed to rodent or other animal models). This FOA is not intended to support the conduct of a clinical trial.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) requests applications to explore human pancreatic tissues for the discovery of early biomarkers of T1D pathogenesis, the description of specific signaling or processing pathways that may contribute to the asymptomatic phase of T1D, the development of clinical diagnostic tools for the detection and staging of early T1D in at-risk or recently-diagnosed individuals, and/or the identification of therapeutic targets for the development of preventative or early treatment strategies. Successful applicants will join the Consortium on Beta Cell Death and Survival (CBDS), whose mission is to better define and detect the mechanisms of beta cell stress and destruction central to the development of T1D in humans, with the long-term goal of detecting beta cell destruction and protecting the residual beta cell mass in T1D patients as early as possible in the disease process, and of preventing the progression to autoimmunity. The purpose of this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is to reduce risky alcohol use among women of childbearing age through system-level implementation of alcohol screening and brief intervention (SBI) in health systems providing women’s health services. Risky alcohol use can result in a variety of negative health and social consequences, such as motor vehicle crashes, intimate partner violence, and fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. It is costly, results in over 88,000 deaths annually, and can affect serious medical conditions, such as hypertension, liver disease and certain types of cancer. Health professionals are uniquely positioned to intervene with patients with acute and chronic health conditions caused or exacerbated by risky alcohol use. Alcohol SBI implementation efforts within health systems will focus on development and implementation of: a training and technical assistance plan; alcohol SBI protocols in primary care clinics; system-level approaches that facilitate uptake (e.g., electronic health record integration and performance metrics); an evaluation plan assessing feasibility and impact of system-level implementation; a dissemination plan on promising models and lessons learned; and a sustainability plan. Expected performance outcomes include documenting provider/clinic readiness to conduct alcohol SBI, documenting implementation barriers and proposed solutions, tracking clinic-level data on alcohol SBI, and assessing the use of system-level strategies.

This notice solicits applications for the FY 2018 Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) hereinafter referred to as the "National HCOP Academies." The purpose of this grant program is to assist individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds to enter a health profession through the development of academies that will support and guide them through the educational pipeline. Based on Section 739 of the Public Health Service Act, academies are expected to focus on: 1) promoting the recruitment of qualified individuals from economically or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds into health professions, including allied health programs; 2) improving retention, matriculation and graduation rates by implementing tailored enrichment programs designed to address the academic and social needs of economically or educationally disadvantaged students; and 3) providing opportunities for community-based health professions training in primary care settings, emphasizing experiences in rural and underserved communities.

The proposed Funding Opportunity Announcement supports the provision of technical assistance and training to National Comprehensive Cancer Control grantees and their coalitions by national organizations with demonstrated capacities and expertise in chronic disease prevention and health promotion. This effort will contribute to the full adoption of evidence-based and promising comprehensive cancer control interventions in the areas of primary prevention, screening, and survivorship. This effort also aims to improve comprehensive cancer control program capacity to expand the reach of the target audience, efficiently use resources, increase competence and commitment for health action and change, and increase ability to respond to emerging health issues.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages applications for Silvio O. Conte Centers for Basic Neuroscience or Translational Mental Health Research. The NIMH seeks teams of researchers working at different levels of analysis and employing integrative, novel, and creative experimental approaches to address high-risk, high-impact questions in basic neuroscience research, or in translational research with the primary objectives of: (a) advancing the state of the science in basic brain and behavior research that will uncover and dissect the underlying mechanisms that will ultimately provide the foundation for understanding mental disorders; (b) supporting the integration and translation of basic and clinical neuroscience research on severe mental illnesses; and/or (c) advancing our understanding of the neurobehavioral developmental mechanisms and trajectories of psychopathology that begin in childhood and adolescence. The Conte Centers program is intended to support interdisciplinary basic neuroscience or translational research demonstrating an extraordinary level of synergy, integration, and potential for advancing the state of the field. This program is intended only for projects that could not be achieved using other, more standard grant mechanisms. The Conte Centers program also provides an opportunity to establish interdisciplinary basic neuroscience or translational research experiences for students and post doctorates.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages R21 applications that propose to conduct secondary analyses of existing data sets relevant to diabetes and selected endocrine and metabolic diseases including thyroid, parathyroid and Cushings diseases and acromegaly; and genetic metabolic disease including cystic fibrosis, lysosomal storage diseases, and disorders of the urea cycle, amino acid metabolism and metal transport where the focus is on peripheral metabolism or organ function; obesity, liver diseases, alimentary GI tract diseases and nutrition; kidney, urologic, and hematologic diseases. The goal of this program is to facilitate research that explores innovative hypotheses through the use of existing data sets or data, for which the primary goal is data analysis and not preparation/presentation of data.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) is accepting applications for fiscal year (FY) 2018 National Center of Excellence for Tobacco-Free Recovery (Short Title: National Center - TFR). The purpose of this program is to establish a national center with specialized subject matter expertise to provide training and technical assistance to states, local governments, tribal communities, behavioral health organizations, primary care providers, clinicians, peers, families, and other stakeholders to help reduce tobacco use among persons with behavioral health disorders, with an emphasis on individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) and co-occurring disorders (COD). The expectation is that the National Center - TFR will build upon and expand SAMHSA' efforts to increase awareness, disseminate current research, educate behavioral health care providers, and create results-oriented collaborations among stakeholder organizations in an effort to reduce tobacco use among individuals with behavioral health disorders.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement is to solicit applications for the Vaccine Treatment and Evaluation Units (VTEUs) to implement clinical site protocols (clinical research, clinical trials) for evaluating vaccines, other preventive biologics, therapeutics, diagnostics, including prognostic and predictive markers, and devices for the treatment and prevention of infectious diseases as part of NIAID Infectious Diseases Clinical Research Consortium (IDCRC). A companion FOA solicits applications for the Leadership Group for the Infectious Diseases Clinical Research Consortium, hereafter referred to as the Leadership Group (LG), which provides for overall administrative and scientific leadership for the clinical research and clinical trials conducted. While the primary scientific focus will be on product evaluation for NIAID priority areas, including malaria/neglected tropical diseases, sexually transmitted infections, respiratory infections, and enteric diseases, the VTEUs must also provide surge capacity to address emerging infectious diseases.

PSC Partners Seeking a Cure is a nonprofit foundation whose mission is to provide education and support to patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis, their families, and their caregivers and to raise funds for research on the causes, treatments, and cures for PSC, an autoimmune disease that causes the bile ducts inside and outside the liver to become scarred, narrowed, and eventually blocked. The foundation offers grants of up to $60,000 over two years in support of projects that address a novel, basic, or clinical research question related to PSC and closely allied diseases (such as inflammatory bowel diseases, ulcerative colitis, or Crohn's disease) as they relate to PSC. Preference will be given to projects that have the potential to discover a cure for the disease and/or that identify novel therapies which may significantly delay time to liver transplantation, prevent disease recurrence following liver transplantation, and/or improve the quality of life of those with PSC.

This notice announces the opportunity to apply for funding under the Rural Health Network Development Planning Program ("Network Planning"). Health care networks can be an effective strategy to help smaller rural health care providers and health care service organizations align resources and strategies, achieve economies of scale and efficiencies, and address challenges more effectively as a group than as single providers. For example, a critical access hospital, a community health center, and a public health department may collaborate to form a network around a shared purpose. Other examples of health care providers could be: hospitals, public health agencies, home health providers, mental health centers, substance abuse service providers, rural health clinics, primary care providers, oral health providers, social service agencies, health profession schools, local school districts, emergency services providers, community and migrant health centers, federally-qualified health centers, tribal health programs, churches, faith-based organizations, and civic organizations that are/will be providing health care. The goals of the Network Planning program are centered around approaches that will aid providers in better serving their communities given the changes taking place in health care, as providers transition from focusing on the volume of services to focusing on the value of services. The intent is that rural health networks will expand access to care, increase the use of health information technology, explore alternative health care delivery models, and continue to achieve quality health care across the continuum of care from prevention and wellness to acute and long-term care.
