The National Vaccine Program Office would like to announce the anticipated availability of funds for Fiscal Year (FY) 2018 cooperative agreement awards] under the authority of section 1702(a) of the Public Health Service Act. The FOA will solicit applications for projects conducting research through implementing and evaluating interventions related to fostering informed vaccine decision making by assessing or addressing vaccine confidence or hesitancy, particularly via vaccine education and communication. The work funded by NVPO cannot also be funded by other awards. The 2010 National Vaccine Plan (NVP) recognizes the importance of communication activities that are strategic, science-based, transparent, and culturally appropriate when it comes to utilizing communication to enhance informed vaccine decision making and vaccination acceptance. The National Vaccine Program Office (NVPO) collaborates with federal partners to provide strategic direction for the coordination of the vaccine and immunization enterprise for the National Vaccine Plan (NVP) implementation http://www.hhs.gov/nvpo/vacc _plan/2010%20Plan/nationalvaccineplan.pdf. NVPO will partner with 2-3 organizations to collaborate on projects that will fall specifically under goal 3 of the NVP (i.e., support communications to enhance informed vaccine decision-making) as well as within the recommendations of the National Vaccine Advisory Committee June 2015 Report: Assessing the State of Vaccine Confidence in the United States: Recommendations from the National Vaccine Advisory Committee. https://www.hhs.gov/sites/default/files/nvpo/nvac/reports/nvac-vaccine-confidence-public-health-report-2015.pdf. That report emphasized the importance of developing measurement tools, as well as interventions for supporting healthcare providers, communities, and policies which foster confidence in vaccines.

i. Purpose: The purpose of these activities is to support the goals of the HHS Action Plan for the Prevention, Care, and Treatment of Viral Hepatitis, 2014-2016 (available at http://aids.gov/pdf/viral-hepatitis-action-plan.pdf) by ensuring Hepatitis B-infected pregnant women are identified so that their infants can receive timely post-exposure prophylaxis, improvements in post-vaccination serologic testing to improve efficiencies, and data collection to assess infant outcomes ii. Outcomes: Increased identification of Hepatitis B-infected pregnant women; increased rates of post-vaccination serologic testing among infants born to Hepatitis B-infected pregnant women; and assessment of factors associated with infant outcomes iii. Strategies and Activities: Collaborations: To maximize opportunities for Hepatitis B prevention through vaccination, referral for care, and treatment of persons found to have chronic Hepatitis B infection, this FOA encourages Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention Program collaborations and service integration as a program imperative of the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention. Such collaborations can increase efficiency, reduce redundancy, eliminate missed opportunities, and improve outcomes through the use of shared data and services. a. With CDC-funded programs: Applicants should create and build upon internal health department collaborations to improve identification of Hepatitis B-infected pregnant women; screen their household and sexual contacts for Hepatitis B and complete vaccination of susceptible persons; refer persons with chronic Hepatitis B infection for care and treatment; and report infants, household, and sexual contacts with chronic Hepatitis B infection to the National Notifiable Diseases Surveillance System. b. With organizations external to CDC: Opportunities for collaboration with non-CDC organizations will be encouraged; non-CDC organizations may include commercial laboratories and health system

This research opportunity encourages studies that address scientific areas potentially relevant to vaccine safety such as 1) characterization of physiological and immunological responses to vaccines and vaccine components, including different adjuvants; 2) how genetic variations affect immune/physiological responses that may impact vaccine safety; 3) identification of risk factors (e.g., infection history, predisposition to or presence of allergic and/or autoimmune disease and biological markers that may be used to assess whether there is a relationship between certain diseases or disorders and licensed vaccines; 4) creation/evaluation of statistical methodologies for analyzing data on vaccine safety, including data available from existing data sources such as passive reporting systems or healthcare databases; or 5) the application of genomic/molecular technologies and systems biology approaches to evaluate vaccine safety. This FOA aligns with the research goals and objectives outlined in the U.S. National Vaccine Plan).

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has issued an Request for Proposals for research that will lead to the development of a universal influenza vaccine Part of the foundation's Grand Challenges program, the goal of the foundation's Ending the Pandemic Threat: A Grand Challenge for Universal Influenza Vaccine Development initiative is to identify novel, transformative concepts that will lead to development of universal influenza vaccines offering protection from morbidity and mortality caused by all subtypes of circulating and emerging (drifted and shifted) Influenza A subtype viruses and Influenza B lineage viruses for at least three to five years. It is envisaged that such a universal influenza vaccine would address the threat from both seasonal and pandemic influenza, thus alleviating the need for annual seasonal influenza vaccination campaigns, averting significant global morbidity and mortality, and better preparing the world for the next influenza pandemic. While other funders are supporting development of universal Influenza vaccines, three things set this Grand Challenge apart. The Gates Foundation seeks to fund ideas that are bold and innovative, bridging the funding 'valley of death' to translate these novel approaches into products ready for human clinical trials. It also aims to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and cross-fertilization of ideas from outside the traditional influenza research community. Third, it seeks completely transformative approaches rather than incremental research.

Other key partners include CDC, World Health Organization (WHO), the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Rotary International, American Red Cross, and the UN Foundation. UNICEF, in conjunction with CDC, will provide programmatic assistance and vaccines for supplemental immunization activities (SIAs) in priority countries as well as strengthening of routine immunization delivery systems and capacities in developing countries to achieve globally agreed goals for disease eradication, elimination and reduction. Additionally this agreement may be used to support activities to address other global health priorities in line with CDC goals. The purpose of this initiative is to stimulate basic research, discovery, and early translational research to enable and accelerate the generation of highly efficacious pre-erythrocytic stage malaria vaccines, including sporozoite-based vaccines    . Cross-fertilization and collaboration among investigators from malaria vaccine research and other basic research areas such as parasite biology, parasite genomics, pathogenesis, and host immunology are highly encouraged. The goal is to generate one or more promising vaccine candidates against human malaria that exhibit performance superior to currently available sporozoite-based vaccines and are suitable for further downstream process development and future clinical evaluation.

The COVID-19 Vaccine Challenge Series aims to find several digital solutions that will help ADB's developing member countries (DMCs) tackle a broad range of challenges as vaccines become available-from vaccine delivery and distribution, to public communication and education, to mobilization and monitoring of healthcare workers and volunteers, as well as safe and efficient administration of COVID-19 vaccines.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to support novel strategies for the rational design of vaccines against hepatitis C virus (HCV), to assess the vaccines for their ability to induce protective immune responses, and to select candidates for preclinical development and clinical testing. To this end, it will be critical to advance knowledge of the structural basis for broad immunological protection, and to elucidate correlates of HCV protection by leveraging samples from existing human cohorts and vaccine studies. This information will serve as a guide for the construction of new and improved candidate prophylactic HCV vaccines that will be assessed for immunogenicity and efficacy in appropriate animal models.

The purpose of this notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) is to: 1) obtain a better understanding of the factors contributing to disparities in vaccination coverage observed between adolescents living in rural areas compared to adolescents living in urban areas within the United States for all recommended vaccines, with a special emphasis on human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine; and 2) implement and evaluate an intervention(s) to improve vaccination coverage among adolescents living in rural areas.

The goal of the NOSI is to develop strategies and interventions to address vaccine hesitancy, uptake, and implementation among populations who experience health disparities in the US. The NOSI will solicit research to help understand and address misinformation, distrust, and hesitancy regarding vaccines (e.g., SARS-CoV-2, human papilloma virus, pneumococcal, influenza, hepatitis B, and herpes zoster) that target adults in the United States and territories, especially among populations who are at increased risk for morbidity and mortality due to long-standing systemic health and social inequities and chronic medical conditions. The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to solicit grant applications that propose to establish Consortia for HIV/AIDS Vaccine Development (CHAVD) to support a coordinated, multidisciplinary team(s) of researchers focused on iterative approaches to accelerate HIV vaccine development by addressing key immunogen design roadblocks to the discovery and development of a safe and effective antibody-mediated preventive HIV vaccine.

The goal of this non-research NOFO is to develop and implement programs designed to improve adult vaccination coverage rates, using the principles of the Standards for Adult Immunization Practice. This NOFO will have two components, one that focuses on influenza vaccination in high risk adults and another component that focuses on racial and ethnic disparities in adult vaccinations more broadly. It is anticipated that one award will be made per component. Interested applicants may apply for one or both components.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to support innovative studies to identify and understand the immunological responses that mediate protection from Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) infection or following vaccination with Bacillus Calmette-Gurin (BCG) or investigational vaccines. Studies may focus on any stage of mycobacterial infection and may include HIV-infected or uninfected individuals. Development of novel functional assays to assess host response and inclusion of immune profiling and systems biology approaches are encouraged. This FOA seeks to stimulate innovative research in deciphering immune mechanisms in humans required for protection from Mtb infection or tuberculosis (TB) disease, or induced by TB vaccines that go beyond what have traditionally been investigated in TB.

The purpose of this project is to obtain economic information about vaccines and immunization policies, programs, and practices using economic and decision analyses and other appropriate methods. The results of up to four economic studies will be used to help inform policy and the development of effective interventions. These studies will provide better understanding of the costs and benefits to relevant populations of health interventions related to vaccine-preventable diseases, as well as those diseases with potential vaccines in development.
