PSC Partners Seeking a Cure Invites Applications for Research Grants | RFPs | PND - 0 views

  •
PSC Partners Seeking a Cure is a nonprofit foundation whose mission is to provide education and support to patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis, their families, and their caregivers and to raise funds for research on the causes, treatments, and cures for PSC, an autoimmune disease that causes the bile ducts inside and outside the liver to become scarred, narrowed, and eventually blocked. The foundation offers grants of up to $60,000 over two years in support of projects that address a novel, basic, or clinical research question related to PSC and closely allied diseases (such as inflammatory bowel diseases, ulcerative colitis, or Crohn's disease) as they relate to PSC. Preference will be given to projects that have the potential to discover a cure for the disease and/or that identify novel therapies which may significantly delay time to liver transplantation, prevent disease recurrence following liver transplantation, and/or improve the quality of life of those with PSC.

The FDA Center for Drug Evaluation and Research seeks to support efforts to research, identify key issues, and convene appropriate subject matter experts to help advance regulatory science to promote the increased availability of safe and effective drugs to the public. This effort will inform regulatory science by advancing the scientific discussion of key research topics of interest to both FDA and external stakeholders such as the pharmaceutical industry, healthcare professionals, patients, and academic researchers. FDA seeks support to address research needs identified in the 2018 reauthorization of the Prescription Drug User Fee Act (PDUFA VI) and requirements under the 21st Century Cures Act. The research areas identified in PDUFA and the 21st Century Cures Act represent key scientific priorities identified by FDA, Congress, and stakeholders that, if advanced, will help expedite the development of drugs and improve efforts to assess their safety and effectiveness, thereby increasing the availability of safe and effective drugs to the public.

National Stop Transmission of Polio (NSTOP) initiative supporting polio eradication in ... - 0 views

  •
Polio is a crippling and potentially fatal infectious disease and is considered by the World Health Organization (WHO) to be a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) with a target of eradication by 2015 and polio free certification date of 2018. There is no cure, but there are safe and effective vaccines. CDC Director Thomas Frieden, MD, MPH, has designated polio eradication an agency-wide priority through activation of the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) for the last 32 months for global polio response activities. The US congress has included a significant increase in polio funding for fiscal year 2014 with a mandate to work with all government and non-government partners to eradicate polio (Congressional committee records, 2013). CDC is one of five spearheading partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) providing technical and financial support to implement polio eradication activities globally. GPEI has four strategies to meet this target for polio eradication: routine immunization, supplementary immunization, acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) surveillance, and targeted “mop-up” campaigns. Although the entire African region is at risk, polio remains endemic in Nigeria and ongoing outbreaks have occurred in central and east African countries. Until polio transmission is interrupted in these countries, polio will remain a risk throughout the region and the world. This program will support the US Government endorsed GPEI and the Global Immunization Vision and Strategy, 2006-2015. As evidenced by recent outbreaks and WHO/CDC risk assessments (‘Assessing the Risks for Poliovirus Outbreaks’, MMWR, September 2013), public health workers at the local and national level in polio endemic Nigeria, polio outbreak countries in east and central African countries and other at-risk countries in the African region do not have the adequate expertise to conduct polio activities effectively for urgent and sustained polio eradic

NineSights Community - Request for Proposal: 2aNicotine Reduction 2c - 0 views

  •
Nicotine is a substance that occurs naturally in tobacco leaves. American Blend cigarettes use three different types of tobacco ranging in nicotine content:  (1) Flue-cured tobacco with leaf ranging from 15 to 45 mg/g and stem from 3 to 7 mg/g, (2) Burley tobacco with leaf ranging from 15 to 50 mg/g and stem from 3 to 7 mg/g, and (3) Oriental tobacco with leaf ranging from 5 to 20 mg/g (this type is not stemmed).  Given these ranges and common blending approaches, the nicotine content in most American Blend cigarettes ranges from 14 to 27 mg/g. There exists the possibility that future governmental regulations will require a significant reduction in the concentration of nicotine in tobacco products. Existing extraction technologies can reduce the amount of nicotine by 90% but are very expensive, or they eliminate the sensorial characteristics and flavor compounds of tobacco as well. NineSigma's client desires a cost-effective technology to significantly lower levels of nicotine in tobacco leaves by 50% or more.
