The Epilepsy Foundation has announced its eighth annual epilepsy "Shark Tank" competition for the most innovative ideas in epilepsy and seizure treatment and care. Examples of novel ideas include a system to detect seizures with the capacity to provide early warning to the patient or family; a treatment that stops a seizure from progressing; a system that helps patients manage their daily treatment; a device that prevents physical injury that patients may experience when in seizure; or an entirely new product concept with the promise to dramatically improve the lives of people with epilepsy. Selected finalists will receive international recognition and compete for grants totaling $200,000 to support the development and commercialization of their new product, technology, or therapeutic concept. As many as six finalists will be selected to present at the 2019 Anti-Epileptic Drug & Device Trials, May 22-24, 2019, in Miami. Each presenter will have five minutes to present the concept, followed by five minutes of questioning. The event will feature live voting among audience members and a panel of judges (Sharks) representative of industry, advocacy, investors, and the research and medical communities. The project (or projects) deemed to be the most innovative will be announced at the conclusion of the competition.

The purpose of this FOA is to solicit applications for an Epilepsy Center without Walls (CWOW) focused on collaborative preclinical and clinical research to prepare for translational and clinical development of disease modifying or prevention therapies for epilepsy. An additional goal is to develop community partnerships and community resources to advance development of such therapies.   

This notice announces the opportunity to apply for funding under the Innovations in Access to Care for Children and Youth with Epilepsy Program. The purpose of this program is to support those working to improve access to coordinated, comprehensive, quality care for children and youth with epilepsy (CYE) in medically underserved and/or rural areas. The project will support recipients of funding under the Transforming Health Care for CYE program (HRSA-19-060) and provide national leadership and resources on practices, policies, and tools to improve the care of CYE. The recipient will coordinate HRSA-19-060 grant recipient activities and provide HRSA-19-060 grant recipients with technical assistance, training, and education to implement telehealth and telemedicine strategies and improve youth health care transition processes, communication and collaboration between primary and specialty care, data collection, quality improvement, and evaluation. Additionally, the recipient will analyze, compile and disseminate evidence-based and innovative practices, policies, tools, and resources related to health care management of CYE and develop partnerships with national organizations and key stakeholders to improve health care of CYE, especially those residing in rural and/or medically underserved areas.

The purpose of this FOA is to solicit applications for an Epilepsy Center without Walls (CWOW) focused on multidisciplinary, collaborative research to further the development of disease modifying or prevention therapies for epilepsy.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to encourage cooperative agreement (U54) applications from multidisciplinary groups of investigators to accelerate the rate of progress in determining the functional, pharmacological, neuronal network and whole animal consequences of genetic variants discovered in patients with various types of epilepsy and to develop strategies for establishing diagnostic criteria and identifying potential targets for intervention.

1) Philip R. Dodge Young Investigator Award: An award for basic science or clinical research by promising young investigators who are members of the Child Neurology Society. Applications will be judged on the basis of originality, scientific merit, succinctness, and relevance. The recipient of the Dodge award will receive a grant-in-aid of $20,000 and will be invited to present their work at the 46th Annual Meeting of the Child Neurology Society in Kansas City, MO on October 6, 2017. 2) Child Neurology Shields Research Grant: The grant supports translational or clinical research by a child neurologist or developmental pediatrician early in his/her academic career. The selected investigator will receive a $100,000 grant of $50,000 per year for two years. 3) Pediatric Epilepsy Research Foundation (PERF) Scientific Research Grant: The grant supports clinical or basic science research by a child neurologist or developmental pediatrician early in his/her academic career. The selected investigator will receive a $100,000 grant of $50,000 per year for two years.

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) is seeking a Data Coordinating Center (DCC) for biospecimen and consent related activities for the Sudden Death in the Young (SDY) Case Registry. SDY is a tragic event with longstanding impact on families and communities. Although the causes of SDY are myriad, sudden unexpected infant death (SUID), sudden cardiac death and sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) are three examples that have inspired public health efforts at prevention. Yet fundamental gaps in knowledge about incidence, mechanisms, and risk factors for SDY limit the identification of effective prevention efforts. This acquisition is for one contract for a SDY Data Coordinating Center with subcontracts and/or other mechanisms as needed to accomplish all necessary work described in the Statement of Work.

The intent of the FY17 ERP IDA is to solicit research to understand the magnitude and underlying mechanisms of PTE. The FY17 ERP IDA offers two levels of funding. Funding Level I is intended to support high-risk or high-gain research from Principal Investigators (PIs) at or above the level of a postdoctoral fellow (or equivalent), but below the level of Assistant Professor (or equivalent). Note that PIs submitting Funding Level I applications will be required to verify their eligibility for this award. Funding Level II is intended to support a more mature, hypothesis-driven research project. To be considered for an FY17 ERP IDA Funding Level II, the PI must be an independent investigator at or above the level of Assistant Professor (or equivalent). While not required, applications to either Funding Level I or II should provide relevant preliminary data. Preliminary data for either Funding Level may come from the PI's published work, pilot data, or from peer-reviewed literature. The requested budget level should be appropriate for the scope of research proposed.For Funding Level I:The anticipated direct costs budgeted for the entire period of performance for an FY17 ERP IDA award will not exceed $300,000. The maximum period of performance is 2 years. For Funding Level II:The anticipated direct costs budgeted for the entire period of performance for an FY17 ERP IDA award will not exceed $500,000. The maximum period of performance is 3 years. FY17 ERP IDA Focus Areas: The research impact for the FY17 ERP IDA is expected to benefit the military, Veteran, and civilian communities.
