The purpose of this funding is to support etiologic and effectiveness research on driving while polysubstance impaired. Specifically, research is solicited to identify risk and protective factors associated with polysubstance impaired driving and its associated deaths and injuries, or to identify effective interventions to prevent polysubstance impaired driving and its associated deaths and injuries. Polysubstance impaired driving includes driving while impaired by alcohol plus at least one other drug, such as marijuana or opioids. Research Priority #1 is to conduct etiologic research to inform our understanding of the characteristics of and risk and protective factors associated with impaired driving when alcohol plus other drugs (such as marijuana or prescription or illicit opioids) are involved. Research Priority #2 is to conduct effectiveness research to evaluate interventions most effective at preventing driving while impaired by alcohol plus other drugs (such as marijuana or prescription or illicit opioids).

NHTSA is responsible for reducing vehicle-related fatalities and injuries on our nation's highways through education, research, safety standards and enforcement activity. States are responsible for laws regulating individual conduct and behavior within their jurisdictions. This includes the regulation of impaired driving. The DOT has a long history of development and evaluation of prosecutor training for the prosecution of impaired driving cases. Beginning in 1991, the DOT committed to developing a comprehensive prosecutorial impaired driving program and other highway safety issues to support States and provide prosecutor training. Previous efforts have created five (5) training courses that State prosecutors may use and developed the delivery of the training to States. These training courses include courtroom preparation for law enforcement as law enforcement and prosecutors work closely to reduce drug impaired driving through enforcement and adjudication. NHTSA's support for prosecutor training development has continued and this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) provides the opportunity to further develop and evaluate training that will increase the knowledge and skills of State and local prosecutors involved in impaired driving cases.

This announcement solicits applications for the Improving Timeliness of Newborn Screening Diagnosis program. The purpose of the initiative is to improve the time to diagnosis and treatment for babies undergoing newborn screening (NBS) who receive a presumptive positive result. This initiative will fund one organization that will facilitate and coordinate collaborative learning and quality improvement (QI) activities by newborn screening programs using strategies that improve newborn screening timeliness. The overall goal for this initiative is to increase the number of states that meet the Secretary¿s Advisory Committee on Heritable Disorders in Newborns and Children (SACHDNC or Committee) recommendations on timeliness and the number of infants receiving timely diagnosis and treatment. The SACHDNC¿s duties include providing advice and recommendations to the Secretary concerning grants and projects awarded under section 1109 of the PHS Act and making systematic evidence-based and peer-reviewed recommendations to the Secretary that include the heritable disorders that have the potential to significantly affect public health, for which all newborns should be screened. In order to achieve the best outcomes for babies, the Committee has discussed the following time periods to improve notification of results*: 1) Presumptive positive results for time-critical conditions should be communicated immediately to the child¿s healthcare provider but no later than the fifth day of life. 2) All presumptive positive results for all other conditions should be communicated to the child¿s healthcare provider as soon as possible but no later than seven (7) days of life. 3) All NBS results should be reported within seven (7) days of life. *On February 12, 2015, the DACHDNC will finalize these recommendations. The purpose of this funding is to provide state health departments the guidance and resources they need to address the problematic opioid prescribing driving the prescription drug overdose epidemic. States receiving funding must address prescribing on multiple fronts. Awardees must expand and enhance their state PDMP and implement health insurer or health system interventions. States may also choose to also conduct policy evaluations or implement other prescribing innovations. These activities will impact the patient and provider behaviors driving the epidemic in the medium term and ultimately improve the health outcomes associated with this public health problem.

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society mobilizes people and resources to drive research for a cure and to address the challenges of people affected by MS. To that end, the society is accepting applications for its Pilot Grant Program, which provides high-risk pilot grants for the testing of novel ideas that may serve to advance its mission of stopping MS progression, restoring function, improving quality of life, and preventing MS. The program supports fundamental as well as applied studies, non-clinical or clinical in nature, including projects in patient management, care, and rehabilitation.

The mission of the Simons Foundation Autism Research Initiative  is to improve the diagnosis and treatment of autism spectrum disorders through the funding, catalyzing, and driving of high-quality research. To that end, the program is seeking applications for SFARI awards from individuals eager to conduct bold, imaginative, rigorous, and relevant research.

The current FOA aims to support HIV preventive interventions in Mozambique targeting KP and OVP in provinces of Mozambique characterized by high prevalence of HIV, rapid development and increasing number of multinational companies, transport corridor areas, high mobility and transient male workforce, increased tourism, and increased HIV risk from commercial sex work and transactional sex, which together constitute some of the main factors driving the epidemic in Mozambique. A successful FOA respondent will support the adoption of combination prevention approaches targeting behavioral, biomedical, and structural interventions to ensure effective reach and impact on target population. Interventions aim to increase knowledge of HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among KP and other priority populations, reduce sexual risk behavior, increase knowledge and access to preventive commodities among target population. Interventions will also promote HIV testing and counseling (HTC) and create demand for the uptake of HTC services by KP and OVC, increase access to HIV, STI and tuberculosis (TB) services in addition to other health care services, and support access to universal coverage of HIV treatment for all eligible PLHIV within KP and OVP.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, Center for Mental Health Services is accepting applications for a fiscal year (FY) 2015 Suicide Prevention Resource Center grant. The purpose of this program is to build national capacity for preventing suicide by providing technical assistance, training, and resources to assist states, tribes, organizations, SAMHSA Garrett Lee Smith and other SAMHSA grantees, and individuals to develop suicide prevention strategies (including programs, interventions, and policies) that advance the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention (NSSP), with the overall goal of reducing suicides and suicidal behaviors in the nation. This work includes support of the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention (Action Alliance), and working to advance high-impact objectives of the NSSP. The Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SPRC) is the nation's only technical assistance center whose mission is to advance the NSSP, a roadmap for action that if fully implemented would significantly reduce the number of suicide attempts and deaths within this country. Full implementation of the NSSP requires multiple approaches at multiple levels among multiple entities. Effective approaches require a comprehensive, sustained, data-drive strategy; an active, effective community component as well as an active, effective, clinical systems approach; and community systems that include a wide range of public and private partners. SPRC's work must target approaches, systems, and entities with the highest potential to prevent suicidal crises and save the most lives. All of SPRC's efforts are driven by the ultimate goal of reducing suicide attempts and deaths in this country. The SPRC grant closely aligns with SAMHSA's Strategic Initiative on Prevention of Substance Abuse and Mental Illness. The broad goal of the Interdisciplinary Research Leaders (IRL) program is to produce diverse interdisciplinary leaders who conduct and apply high-quality, community-engaged, action-oriented, equity-focused, health research in order to drive improvements in the health of communities. Accordingly, the program will recruit and select a diverse cohort of mid-career researchers and community members to become IRL program fellows. Each cohort of fellows will participate in a three-year program. During this time, fellows will receive leadership training, the opportunity for cutting-edge research method exploration, mentoring, networking opportunities, and fellowship and research funds, so that they may better effect change and become the next generation of leaders in population health and health equity research.

The ultimate goal of translational research is to move an observation forward into clinical application and accelerate the clinical introduction of healthcare products, technologies, or practice guidelines. Observations that drive a research idea may be derived from a laboratory discovery, population-based studies, or a clinician's first-hand knowledge of patients and anecdotal data. However, PIs should not view translational research as a one-way continuum from bench to bedside. The research plan is encouraged to involve a reciprocal flow of ideas and information between basic and clinical science. The GWIRP Qualitative Research Award mechanism is being offered for the first time in FY17. Qualitative research is a form of social inquiry that seeks to understand the human experience by exploring how people interpret and make sense of their experiences and the world in which they live. The intent of the FY17 GWIRP Qualitative Research Award is to support qualitative research studies that seek to understand the experiences, perceptions, barriers, and beliefs of Veterans suffering from GWI and those responsible for their care. Observations that drive a research idea may be derived from basic discovery, population-based studies, a clinician's firsthand knowledge of patients, or anecdotal data.

Established in 1950 in Rye, New York, by a group of families deeply impacted by muscular dystrophy, the Muscular Dystrophy Association today works to drive scientific research and innovation in care to serve those impacted by neuromuscular disease. In support of that mission, MDA is accepting applications for its clinical research program. Through the program, grants of up to three years in duration will be awarded to researchers focused on the understanding and treatment of neuromuscular disease, including natural history studies, clinical biomarker studies, outcome measure studies, non-interventional clinical research studies, and clinical trials of existing, approved, or repurposed drugs or non-drug interventions. The program also supports clinician-scientists in training, research networks, and travel costs to conferences. Founded in 2009 by two sisters from Brooklyn, the Tell Every Amazing Lady (T.E.A.L.) About Ovarian Cancer Louisa M. McGregor Ovarian Cancer Foundation works to drive medical research, provide survivor support, and promote public awareness and education of the signs, symptoms, and risk factors of ovarian cancer. To that end, the foundation is accepting applications for its 2019 Medical Research Program. Through the program, grants of up to $40,000 will be awarded to investigators working to advance research on ovarian cancer. To be eligible, applicants must be affiliated with a nonprofit institution in the United States.
