The Scleroderma Foundation seeks applications from established investigators both inside and outside the field of scleroderma research for pilot studies designed to obtain preliminary data regarding a highly innovative and/or highly relevant theme related to the disease. The grant is intended to support pilot research likely to lead to more substantial research project grants from federal or non-federal sources. Applications may be submitted by U.S. nonprofit organizations, public and private, including universities, colleges, hospitals, and laboratories. Foreign organizations and institutions are eligible to apply as well. Applicants must have a doctorate degree in medicine, osteopathy, veterinary medicine, or one of the sciences; have completed a postdoctoral fellowship; and have been principal investigator on grants from the Scleroderma Foundation or other national, private, or government agencies in the past. Applicants may request up to $75,000 per year for up to two years.

In 1994 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) collaborated with a broad range of partners in clinical medicine and public health to develop an emerging infections strategy in response to the recommendations issued by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in its 1993 report, “Emerging Infections: Microbial Threats to Health in the United States.” Leading this strategy was the CDC Office of Infectious Diseases (OID)/National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID). One goal was to strengthen local, state, and federal public health infrastructures to support surveillance and implement prevention and control programs. The implementation strategy for this goal was to: 1) provide state-of-the-art training in diagnostic evaluation and testing for medical laboratory personnel to ensure the diagnosis and surveillance of emerging infections; and 2) establish a public health laboratory fellowship in infectious diseases that will train medical microbiologists in public health approaches to diagnosis and molecular epidemiology.

The Blueprint Neurotherapeutics Network (BPN) encourages applications from small businesses seeking support to advance their small molecule drug discovery and development projects into the clinic. Participants in the BPN are responsible for conducting all studies that involve disease- or target-specific assays, models, and other research tools and receive funding for all activities to be conducted in their own laboratories. In addition, applicants will collaborate with NIH-funded consultants and can augment their project with NIH contract research organizations (CROs) that specialize in medicinal chemistry, pharmacokinetics, toxicology, formulations development, chemical synthesis including under Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), and Phase I clinical testing. Projects can enter either at the Discovery stage, to optimize promising hit compounds through medicinal chemistry, or at the Development stage, to advance a development candidate through Investigational New Drug (IND)-enabling toxicology studies and phase I clinical testing. Projects that enter at the Discovery stage and meet their milestones may continue on through Development. BPN awardee institutions retain their assignment of IP rights and gain assignment of IP rights from the BPN contractors (and thereby control the patent prosecution and licensing negotiations) for drug candidates developed in this program.

On behalf of the Governor's Office of Health Transformation (OHT), and the Ohio Departments of Medicaid (ODM), Health (ODH) and Higher Education (ODHE), the Ohio Colleges of Medicine Government Resource Center (GRC) is requesting applications from qualified investigators through the Infant Mortality (IM) Research Partnership to identify interventions and resources needed to improve health outcomes for underserved populations and address the complicated health issue of infant mortality from a systems perspective. The IM Research Partnership seeks to fund multiple research projects in areas including but not limited to: systems dynamics modeling of the impact of the following efforts on infant mortality: improved access to care, safe sleep, and impact of progesterone; predictive modeling for infant mortality; spatial GIS modeling for identifying high-risk communities; and evaluation of the impact of OIMRI home visiting programs.

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), Bureau for Global Health, Office of Health Systems is organizing an Applicants' Conference to present, discuss, and respond to questions from interested parties about the new multiple-award Medicines Quality Assurance Systems Strengthening Program (MQASSP).

The purpose of the FOA is to support unbiased proteomics analysis of matched longitudinal CSF and plasma samples from Accelerating Medicine Partnership in Parkinson's disease (AMP PD) cohorts using a data independent acquisition (DIA) mass spectrometry platform, with the ultimate goal of identifying PD biomarkers for diagnosis, prognosis and progression. Proteomics data generated through this initiative will be broadly shared with the research community through the AMP PD Knowledge Portal to enable additional analyses and data integration across the various datatypes available through AMP PD. A staged approach will be used to first identify and address pre-analytical variables and then incorporate that information into the optimal design for the analysis of 4500 CSF and plasma samples.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites innovative research grant applications focused on identifying potential mechanisms and risk factors underlying HIV treatment associated neuropsychiatric symptoms and neurological toxicities experienced by some people living with HIV infection. Exploratory and high-risk research projects that may lead to identification of targets for therapeutic interventions or personalized medicine are appropriate for this FOA. Basic and preclinical research in domestic and international settings are of interest. Multidisciplinary research teams and collaborative alliances are encouraged but not required.

The Department of Biomedical Informatics hosts an annual internship program each summer which provides high school, undergraduate, and graduate students opportunities to pursue research projects in the field of biomedical informatics under the guidance of research and operational staff and renowned faculty mentors in the Department of Biomedical Informatics. Participants learn useful tools and technologies used in biomedical and clinical research and attend weekly seminars to learn more about the various fields and interdisciplinary interactions biomedical informatics facilitates. Interns also gain very useful presentation abilities through regular lab and programmatic presentation opportunities, including an end-of-program poster session. Many students who have participated in this program have gone on to pursue doctoral degrees in biomedicine, biomedical informatics, computer science, and electrical engineering or to complete degrees in medicine and nursing. The purposes of the NCIPC extramural violence prevention research program are to: Build the scientific base for the prevention of violence by helping to expand and advance our understanding of the primary prevention of interpersonal and self-directed violence. Encourage professionals from a wide spectrum of disciplines of epidemiology, behavioral and social sciences, medicine, biostatistics, public health, health economics, law, and criminal justice to perform research in order to prevent violence more effectively. Encourage investigators to propose research that involves the development and testing of primary prevention strategies as well as research on methods to enhance the adoption and maintenance of effective strategies among individuals, organizations, or communities.

This position has developed out of a collaborative research initiative between CHM and the International Diagnostics Centre (IDC) at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine on diagnostics for communicable disease. Recent research has demonstrated the importance of dynamic contextual processes and environmental factors in determining how individuals, populations, and health systems respond to novel technologies and disease control interventions. However, the role of socio-cultural factors is often unacknowledged in technology development, implementation, and assessments, with consequences for the uptake and efficacy of healthcare delivery and disease control in the population. The collaboration between CHM and IDC aims to promote cross-disciplinary research into diagnostic technologies, foregrounding the significance of socio-cultural contexts in the development, successful integration, and sustainable implementation of diagnostic technologies for infectious diseases in East Asia.

The Osler Library of the History of Medicine of McGill University sponsors a travel grant designed to assist scholars who need to travel and establish temporary residence in Montreal in order to use the resources of the Library. The Library has the largest collection of rare and secondary material in medical history in Canada, manuscripts and archives of such notables as Sir William Osler, Wilder Penfield, Norman Bethune and Maude Abbott, medical ephemera and 2,500 medical prints. Our monographic, serials and ephemera holdings are listed in the McGill Library Catalogue. The grant is available to historians, physicians, graduate students and others interested in medical history. The Library of Congress invites qualified scholars to apply for a post-doctoral fellowship in the field of health and spirituality. Made possible by a generous endowment from the International Center for the Integration of Health and Spirituality (ICIHS), the fellowship is named in honor of the Center's late founder, David B. Larson, an epidemiologist and psychiatrist, who focused on potentially relevant but understudied factors which might help in prevention, coping, and recovering from illness. The fellowship is designed to continue Dr. Larson's legacy of promoting meaningful, scholarly study of these two important and increasingly interrelated fields. It seeks to encourage the pursuit of scholarly excellence in the scientific study of the relation of religiousness and spirituality to physical, mental, and social health. The fellowship provides an opportunity for a period of six to twelve months of concentrated use of the collections of the Library of Congress, through full-time residency in the Library's John W. Kluge Center. The Kluge Center is located in the splendid Thomas Jefferson Building of the Library, and it furnishes attractive work and discussion space for its scholars as well as easy access to the Library's specialized staff and to the intellectual community of Washington. AOSSM, in partnership with Sanofi, offers a research grant program to fund investigations related to early osteoarthritis (OA) and/or prevention of OA progression. This grant reflects the growing recognition of the importance of osteoarthritis within sports medicine and orthopaedics. The grant will be for $50,000 to support either a clinical research study or a lab/basic science project.
