The Association of Health Care Journalists has teamed up with the National Library of Medicine to present the AHCJ-NLM Fellowships. AHCJ will select four journalists to spend a week on the campus of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. The selected journalists will: Learn how to explore the latest NIH research Learn to understand and interpret biomedical statistics Take advantage of NLM's data, programs and resources for stronger stories Get hands-on training in PubMed, MedlinePlus, ClinicalTrials.gov, ToxNet and Household Products Database Enhance your medical and scientific reporting through this specialized fellowship. See a sample agenda as an example of the kinds of topics you'll be exposed to. Fellowship includes AHCJ membership (new or renewed), travel expenses within the United States and lodging. The dates of the 2013 fellowship are Sept. 15-19. Application deadline is Aug. 9.

The Course Hero-Woodrow Wilson Fellowship for Excellence in Teaching will support rising stars in the academy who love teaching, demonstrate excellence as educators, and are making their mark as exceptional researchers, poised to shape their fields. Designed for young scholars working towards tenure, the Course Hero-WW Fellowship is a "genius grant" that will emphasize the balance between scholarly excellence and commitment to teaching practice that draws on new approaches to pedagogy, creating a new level of engagement for students in and beyond the classroom. In short, Fellows will be emerging heroes in their fields, on a clear trajectory to become great college educators. In its inaugural year, the Course Hero-WW Fellowship will identify five outstanding junior faculty members. Fellows will receive a one-year grant of $40,000-approximately $30,000 to support the engagement of a student assistant and the balance to be used for research and travel support. Exceptional candidates teach in ways that build student confidence and mastery of a subject; encourage critical thinking; explore foundational concepts through the lens of broader themes and global events; promote the power of learning communities beyond the classroom; leverage technology to complement the classroom experience; consider and serve different learning styles; prepare students for lifelong learning; and can serve as replicable teaching models for other educators. Selection takes place in June 2018. The five Fellows will be invited to attend the Course Hero Education Summit in July 2018, where their Fellowships will be announced.

The Library of Congress invites qualified scholars to apply for a post-doctoral fellowship in the field of health and spirituality. Made possible by a generous endowment from the International Center for the Integration of Health and Spirituality (ICIHS), the fellowship is named in honor of the Center's late founder, David B. Larson, an epidemiologist and psychiatrist, who focused on potentially relevant but understudied factors which might help in prevention, coping, and recovering from illness. The fellowship is designed to continue Dr. Larson's legacy of promoting meaningful, scholarly study of these two important and increasingly interrelated fields. It seeks to encourage the pursuit of scholarly excellence in the scientific study of the relation of religiousness and spirituality to physical, mental, and social health. The fellowship provides an opportunity for a period of six to twelve months of concentrated use of the collections of the Library of Congress, through full-time residency in the Library's John W. Kluge Center. The Kluge Center is located in the splendid Thomas Jefferson Building of the Library, and it furnishes attractive work and discussion space for its scholars as well as easy access to the Library's specialized staff and to the intellectual community of Washington. If necessary, special arrangements may be made with the National Library of Medicine for access to its materials as well.

The Ohio Affiliate of  Prevent Blindness is accepting applications for its 2018 Young Investigator Student Fellowship Awards for Female Scholars in Vision Research. The Fellowship Program is designed to provide support for outstanding female scientists committed to pursuing biomedical, behavioral or clinical research careers relevant to the mission of Prevent Blindness - to prevent blindness and preserve sight.  Grants will be awarded for the summer 2018 session.  Awards will range from $3000-$5000 depending upon the availability of funds. The deadline for receipt of applications is Feb. 15, 2018. Applicants must be post-baccalaureate students enrolled in a master's or doctorate program during the summer of 2018, female, citizens or permanent residents of the United States, and conducting their research with a recognized academic institution in the State of Ohio. Applications from diverse fields in the health sciences including, but not limited to ophthalmology, optometry, nursing, genetics, public health, nutrition, gerontology, and bioengineering, are appropriate to the goals of this fellowship award. The Ohio Affiliate of Prevent Blindness encourages fellowship applications which investigate public health issues related to the burden of eye-related health and safety topics.

FSH Society research and fellowship grant awards provide vital start-up  funding for investigators in FSHD and research projects on FSHD. The research milestones and insights gained are demonstrably significant. The fellowship program allows innovative and entrepreneurial research to develop and ultimately to be able to attract funding from large funding sources such as the US National Institutes of Health (NIH). The FSH Society meets an important need in funding and developing new ideas and supporting new investigators in FSHD research by giving them the funds needed to develop data and to carry their ideas to the next stage of development.

The Journalist to Journalist Project of the National Press Foundation is working with the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease to offer all-expenses-paid fellowships for health journalists to cover the 44th Union World Conference on Lung Health in Paris, France. Fellowship winners will attend three days of expert training from Tuesday to Thursday, 29-31 October, then cover the conference through Sunday, 3 November 2013.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Health Policy Fellows program provides the nation's most comprehensive fellowship experience at the nexus of health science, policy and politics in Washington, D.C. It is an outstanding opportunity for exceptional midcareer health professionals and behavioral and social scientists with an interest in health and health care policy promoting the health of the nation. Fellows participate in the policy process at the federal level and use that leadership experience to improve health, health care and health policy. The fellowship requires, at a minimum, a 12-month residential experience in Washington, D.C., with additional support for health policy leadership development activities. The program will select up to six fellows.

The Center for Retirement Research at Boston College is inviting applications to its 2019 Dissertation Fellowship Program in the field of retirement income research.  Through the program, grants of up to $28,000 will be awarded to doctoral candidates to pursue cutting-edge research on retirement issues. Priority areas include Social Security, macroeconomic analyses of Social Security, wealth and retirement income, program interactions, international research, and demographic research. The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Award program supports the training of postdocs in new research areas and methods related to CF as well as the collection of data that can be sued to enable their transition into an independent research career. Research projects proposed through the program should seek to develop new information that contributes to the understanding and basic etiology and pathogenesis of cystic fibrosis. Preference will be given to recent graduates and those just beginning their research careers. Fellowship awards may be approved for up to a two-year period, with funding for year two contingent on submission and approval of a renewal progress report and the availability of funds.  

The purpose of this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) is to support the applicant's management of domestic fellowships for students or recent graduates of CEPH-accredited schools or programs of public health or CCNE-accredited baccalaureate and higher degree colleges of nursing. Fellowships and other similar experiential placements are vital to CDC's strategic interests to ensure students and emerging health professionals receive adequate hand-on experience in public health practice at CDC's domestic offices, at state, tribal, local, and territorial health departments, and at other community-based settings. For the purposes of this NOFO, fellowships are for recent graduates within five years of graduation. The overall goal is to create the opportunities for academia to develop qualified, knowledgeable and experienced students and emerging health professionals suitably prepared to serve in governmental public health practice, or able to apply public health concepts in various healthcare or other settings, to collectively meet the challenge of improving the population’s health. An application that exceeds the upper value of the specified dollar range will be considered non-responsive and will not receive further review.

Founded in 1985, amfAR, the Foundation for AIDS Research works to end the global AIDS epidemic through innovative research and evidence-based public policies. To advance this mission, the organization is inviting applications for the Allan Rosenfield Internship and Fellowship Program. Established to honor the distinguished public health leader Allan Rosenfield, M.D., dean for twenty-two years of Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health, chair of amfAR's program board, and a longtime member of the foundation's board of trustees, the Rosenfeld Fellowship program has been developed to advance the careers of exceptional college undergraduates and graduate students who aspire to become leaders in public health and the fight against the HIV/AIDS epidemic. To that end, the program trains fellows to become effective leaders in public health by immersing them in policy writing, research, and advocacy. Successful candidates are expected to conduct original writing and research related to the domestic and global HIV/AIDS epidemic as well as advocate to members of Congress and their staff, organize meetings and conferences, and participate in community briefings.

The Reynolds Associates, in conjunction with the Historical Collections (HC) unit of the Lister Hill Library, University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), are pleased to announce the availability of short-term awards of up to $1,000 to individual researchers studying one or more aspects of the history of the health sciences during the 2015 calendar year. Intended to support research using the HC unit as a historical resource, the fellowship requires the on-site use of at least one of the unit's three components, which are the Alabama Museum of the Health Sciences, Reynolds Historical Library and UAB Archives.

The Breakthrough Fellowship Award supports recent doctoral or medical graduates in pursuit of innovative, high-impact breast cancer research during their postdoctoral fellowship and allows them to obtain the necessary experience for an independent career at the forefront of breast cancer research. Those individuals should be exceptionally talented researchers who have demonstrated that they are the "best and brightest" of their peers. Applicants must demonstrate that the proposed research has high potential to lead to or make breakthroughs in breast cancer. Applicants for this award must also exhibit a strong desire to pursue a career in breast cancer research, with clear evidence for a researcher development plan that will lead to a successful independent career in breast cancer.

The AHCJ Reporting Fellowships on Health Care Performance are intended to support U.S.-based applicants who have interesting projects in mind for their news outlets that hold the promise of informing and educating the public. Applicants should have a working knowledge of the topic and a good idea of what it will take to complete the project. The project could take several forms. The fellow could choose to evaluate a local health system or a specific local or regional program or an aspect of the national system. An approach might be to compare two health care systems addressing a common problem - access to care for poor and uninsured patients, for example - to see why one community is performing better and why. Fellows pursuing projects such as these would want to consider public data and relevant academic studies in addition to interviews with health care and civic leaders, patients and others.

Focus on Short-term Risk for Suicide (up to $1.5 million over 3 years):Letter of Intent required for this application.  AFSP offers Suicide Research Grants in six categories. Distinguished Investigator Grants (up to $100,000 over 2 years):Grants awarded to investigators at the level of associate professor or higher with an established record of research and publication on suicide.  Standard Research Grants (up to $90,000 over 2 years):Grants awarded to individual investigators at any level. Linked Standard Research Grants (up to $225,000 over 2 years):Grants awarded to investigators at any level performing research involving three or more unique sites. Young Investigator Grants (up to $85,000 over 2 years):Grants awarded to investigators at or below the level of assistant professor. These grants must allocate $10,000 ($5,000 per year) of their award for an established suicide researcher to mentor the Young Investigator. AFSP is available to assist you in identifying a suitable mentor.  Postdoctoral Research Fellowships (up to $104,000 over 2 years):Grants awarded to investigators who have received a Ph.D., M.D., or other doctoral degree within the preceding six years and have had no more than three years of fellowship support. Fellows receive a stipend of $46,000 per year and an institutional allowance of $6,000 per year.  Pilot Grants (up to $30,000 over one or two years):Awarded to investigators at any level, these grants provide seed funding for new projects that have the potential to lead to larger investigations. These grants typically entail feasibility studies rather than hypothesis-driven research.
