The National Institutes of Health (NIH) will award Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Institutional Research Training Grants (T32) to eligible, domestic institutions to enhance predoctoral and postdoctoral research training, including short-term research training, and help ensure that a diverse and highly trained workforce is available to meet the needs of the Nations biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research agenda. Research training programs will incorporate didactic, research, and career development components to prepare individuals for careers that will have a significant impact on the health-related research needs of the Nation. 

The annual Pancreatic Cancer Action Network-AACR Pathway to Leadership grant program represents a joint effort to ensure the future leadership of pancreatic cancer research by supporting outstanding early career investigators, beginning in their postdoctoral research positions and continuing through their successful transition to independent research. A five-year grant of up to $600,000 will be awarded to support a highly promising postdoctoral or clinical research fellow who is in the mentored research phase and ready to transition to an independent research career.

The Lung Cancer Research Foundation supports research on innovative strategies for better treatments, screening, and prevention of all cancers of the lung. The foundation's goal is to fund promising scientific and clinical research initiatives that lead to more positive outcomes and improved quality of life for all lung cancer patients. To that end, LCRF has issued a Request for Proposals designed to provide critical seed support for cutting-edge scientific research on all lung cancers. Through its Research Grant program, the foundation will support projects with a focus on basic science, translational research, clinical research, supportive care, and quality of care/outcomes.

The Innovator Award supports visionary individuals who have demonstrated exceptional creativity, innovative work, and paradigm-shifting leadership in any field including, but not limited to, breast cancer. The Innovator Award will provide these individuals with the funding and freedom to pursue their most novel, visionary, high-risk ideas that could accelerate progress to ending breast cancer. Since the intent of the Innovator Award mechanism is to recognize these remarkably creative and innovative, visionary individuals rather than projects, the central feature of the award is the innovative contribution that the Principal Investigator (PI) can make toward ending breast cancer. The PI should have a past record of challenging the status quo, shifting paradigms by changing a field of research or approach to patient care, exhibiting high levels of creativity, and demonstrating promise for continued innovation in future work. These rare individuals will be able to articulate a vision for ending breast cancer that challenges current dogma and demonstrates an ability to look beyond tradition and convention. The PI is also expected to be established in his/her field and have demonstrated success at forming and leading effective partnerships and collaborations. To further the development of innovative individuals and spark the generation of novel ideas, applications are required to incorporate the mentoring of promising junior investigators. Experience in breast cancer research is not required; however, the application must focus on breast cancer, and the PI must maintain a 50% dedication of his/her full-time professional effort during the award period to breast cancer research. The FY19 PRCRP Horizon Award supports junior-level scientists in conducting impactful research with the mentorship of an experienced cancer researcher (i.e., Mentor). The intent of the Horizon Award is to recruit junior-level scientists to perform research in one of the FY19 PRCRP Topic Areas. The Horizon Award challenges junior scientists to develop and implement research in the cancer field. This opportunity allows for junior investigators to develop a research project, investigate a problem or question in the field of cancer, and further their intellectual development as a cancer researcher of the future. Under this award mechanism, the junior investigator is considered the Principal Investigator (PI), and the application should focus on the PI's research and career development. It should be clear that the proposed research is intellectually designed by the PI with assistance from the Mentor. Preliminary data are not required. However, logical reasoning and a sound scientific rationale for the proposed research must be demonstrated. Clinical trials will not be supported by this mechanism.

The FY19 PCRP Translational Science Award mechanism supports translational research that will develop promising ideas in prostate cancer into clinical applications. Translational research may be defined as an integration of basic science and clinical observations. Observations that drive a research idea may originate from a laboratory discovery, population-based studies, or a clinician's firsthand knowledge of patient care. The ultimate goal of translational research is to move a concept or observation forward into clinical application. As such, applications must include a detailed transition plan that articulates the pathway to moving the project's findings to the next phase of development after successful completion of the award, and how the Principal Investigator (PI) will continue advancing the research toward making a clinical impact, even if clinical impact is not an immediate outcome. However, PIs should not view translational research as a one-way continuum from bench to bedside. The research plan must involve a reciprocal flow of ideas and information between basic and clinical science. The potential impact of the research is expected to be significant and go beyond an incremental advance. Proposed projects may include basic, translational, population science, and/or clinical research, but must demonstrate clinical relevance.

The Research Specialist Award is designed to encourage the development of stable research career opportunities for exceptional scientists who want to continue to pursue research within the context of an existing NCI-funded basic, translational, clinical or population science cancer research program, but not serve as independent investigators. These scientists, such as researchers within a research program, are vital to sustaining the biomedical research enterprise. The Research Specialist Award is intended to provide salary support and sufficient autonomy so that individuals are not solely dependent on NCI grants held by others for career continuity.    

The Caring for Carcinoid Foundation-AACR Grant for Carcinoid Tumor and Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumor Research represents a joint effort to promote and support innovative cancer research. This grant is available to full time, independent junior and senior investigators to develop and study new ideas and innovative approaches that have direct application and relevance to carcinoid tumors or pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors. Proposed research may be in any discipline of basic, translational, clinical, or epidemiological cancer research. Applications are invited from researchers currently in the field as well as investigators with experience in other areas of cancer or biomedical research who have promising ideas and approaches that can be applied to carcinoid tumor or pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor research.

The AACR-Millennium Fellowship in Lymphoma Research represents a joint effort to encourage and support a postdoctoral or clinical research fellow to conduct lymphoma-based research and to establish a successful career path in this field. The research proposed for funding may be basic, translational, clinical or epidemiological in nature and must have direct applicability and relevance to lymphoma. The fellowship provides a one-year grant of $55,000 to support the salary and benefits of the fellow while working on mentored lymphoma-related research. A partial amount of funds may be designated for non-personnel expenses, such as research/laboratory supplies, equipment, publication charges for manuscripts that pertain directly to the funded project and other research expenses. It is anticipated that three fellowships will be funded.

The OCRP Investigator-Initiated Research Award is intended to support meritorious basic and clinically oriented research in ovarian cancer; clinical trials will not be supported by this award mechanism. Research projects may focus on any phase of research from basic laboratory research through translational research. The rationale for a research idea may be derived from a laboratory discovery, population-based studies, a clinician's first-hand knowledge of patients, or anecdotal data. The application must demonstrate logical reasoning and a sound scientific rationale established through a critical review and analysis of the literature for the application to be competitive. Applications must include preliminary data that are relevant to ovarian cancer and support the proposed research project.

The purpose of the Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) program is to stimulate research in educational institutions that provide baccalaureate or advanced degrees for a significant number of the Nation's research scientists, but that have not been major recipients of NIH support. AREA grants create opportunities for scientists and institutions otherwise unlikely to participate extensively in NIH research programs to contribute to the Nation's biomedical and behavioral research effort. AREA grants are intended to support small-scale research projects proposed by faculty members of eligible, domestic institutions, to expose undergraduate and/or graduate students to meritorious research projects, and to strengthen the research environment of the applicant institution.   

The purpose of the NCI Pathway to Independence Award for Outstanding Early Stage Postdoctoral Fellows (K99/R00) program is to increase and maintain a strong cohort of new and talented, NCI-supported, independent investigators. This program is designed for postdoctoral fellows with research and/or clinical doctoral degrees who do not require an extended period of mentored research training beyond their doctoral degrees. The objective of this award is to facilitate a timely transition of these fellows from their mentored, postdoctoral research positions to independent, tenure-track or equivalent faculty positions. The program will provide independent NCI research support during this transition to help awardees to launch competitive, independent research careers. Researchers in the scientific areas of data science and cancer control science are especially encouraged to apply. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is designed specifically for applicants proposing research that does not involve leading an independent clinical trial, a clinical trial feasibility study, or an ancillary clinical trial. Applicants to this FOA are permitted to propose research experience in a clinical trial led by a mentor or co-mentor. Applicants proposing a clinical trial or an ancillary clinical trial as lead investigator, should apply to the companion FOA (RFA-CA-20-015).

These problems and paradoxes phrased as questions are not intended to represent the full range of NCI's priorities in multiple myeloma research. Rather, they are meant to challenge cancer researchers to think about and elucidate specific problems in key areas of multiple myeloma and disparities research that are deemed important but have not received sufficient attention. The FOA includes six Multiple Myeloma PQs that represent diverse fields relevant to multiple myeloma disparities research, but all are framed to inspire interested scientists to conceive new approaches and/or feasible solutions. Each research project (application) proposed in response to this FOA must be focused on addressing one particular research problem defined by one specific MMD PQ selected from the list. Projects proposed to address specific MMD PQs may use strategies that incorporate ideas and approaches from multiple disciplines, as appropriate. Transdisciplinary projects are encouraged as long as they serve the scientific focus of the specific PQ chosen.

The St. Baldrick's Foundation works hard to be sure that every dollar makes the biggest impact possible in childhood cancer research. The Foundation has held several Research Priorities Summits with many of the country's leading pediatric oncology researchers participating to advise the staff and board of directors on funding priorities. The St. Baldrick's team and Scientific Advisors meet regularly to be sure St. Baldrick's funds make the greatest impact on pediatric cancer research. Current funding priorities are divided into four categories: * New discovery research * Translational research and early phase clinical trials * Phase III clinical trials & infrastructure support of participating institutions (primarily the fall grant cycle) * Education of new pediatric oncology researchers In addition to research to understand the biology of childhood cancers and discover leads to more effective treatments, topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Adolescents & young adults * Survivorship, outcomes, and quality of life * Supportive care * Epidemiology and pediatric cancer predispositions * Precision medicine * Alternative & complementary therapies

The AACR and its Chemistry in Cancer Research Working Group established this award in 2007 to recognize the importance of chemistry to advancements in cancer research. The award will be given for outstanding, novel and significant chemistry research, which has led to important contributions to the fields of basic cancer research, translational cancer research, cancer diagnosis, the prevention of cancer or the treatment of patients with cancer. Such research may include, but is not limited to, drug discovery and design; structural biology; proteomics, metabolomics and biological mass spectrometry; chemical aspects of carcinogenesis; imaging agents and radiotherapeutics; and chemical biology. The winner of the Eighth Annual AACR Award for Outstanding Achievement in Chemistry in Cancer Research will give a 50-minute lecture during the AACR Annual Meeting 2014 in San Diego, CA, USA (April 5-9, 2014), receive a commemorative award, a $10,000 honorarium, and receive support for the winner and a spouse to attend the Annual Meeting.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) will award Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Short-Term Institutional Research Training Grants (T35) to eligible, domestic institutions to develop and/or enhance research training opportunities for predoctoral students interested in careers in biomedical, behavioral or clinical research. Many NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs) use this NRSA program exclusively to support intensive, short-term research training experiences for health professional students (medical students, dental students, and/or students in other health-professional programs) during the summer. This program is also intended to encourage training of graduate students in the physical or quantitative sciences to pursue research careers by short-term exposure to, and involvement in, the health-related sciences. The training should be of sufficient depth to enable the trainees, upon completion of the program, to have a thorough exposure to the principles underlying the conduct of biomedical research.

The FY19 PRCRP Impact Award supports hypothesis-driven, high-impact research. The Impact Award mechanism encourages applications with mature research projects that specifically focus on critical scientific or clinical cancer issues, which, if successfully addressed, have the potential to make a major impact on at least one of the FY19 PRCRP Topic Areas. Important factors under consideration will be continuity of research, clinical applicability, and leveraging of clinical samples and trials. Through the Impact Award, the PRCRP seeks to build foundations for finding cures in under-funded, under-studied, and/or lethal militarily relevant cancer or research areas. With the Impact Award, PRCRP offers the unique opportunity to find commonalities in research across multiple cancers that advance the broader cancer field and to address cancer funding disparities within the FY19 PRCRP Topic Areas. The Impact Award supports identifying scientific outcomes through rigorous, robust research that are translatable toward treatment and/or preventive strategies. Research proposed should aim to accelerate promising findings toward clinical applicability and leverage research results to maximize impact.
