The goal of the intended FOA is to establish Study Sites for PRS Methods and Analysis for Populations of Diverse Ancestry to collaboratively generate and refine PRS for populations of diverse ancestry by integrating existing datasets with genomic and phenotype data for a range of complex diseases and traits. Together with a Coordinating Center (described in a separate FOA), grantees funded under the intended FOA will form a Consortium with the primary objectives of: 1) leveraging genetic diversity to develop methods and improve the applicability of PRS to predict health and disease risk across diverse populations, and for a broad range of health and disease measures; and 2) optimizing the integration of large-scale, harmonized genomic and phenotype data to facilitate collaborative analysis, dissemination of PRS-related data, and development of related methods and resources.

The NCI's Diversity Training Branch (DTB) and the Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities (CRCHD) announce the availability of the "Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Award to Promote Diversity" for career development of individuals with a health professional doctoral degree from groups currently underrepresented on a national level in the biomedical, clinical, behavioral, and social sciences. The NCI recognizes a unique and compelling need to promote diversity in the patient-oriented research workforce.   

The Council on Undergraduate Research (CUR) is pleased to offer a limited number of conference grants. These grants will be used to subsidize the cost of attendance for individuals to attend either CUR Dialogues 2015: Climbing the Ladder to Funding Success: Diverse Sources, Diverse Pathways or Undergraduate Research Programs: Building, Enhancing, Sustaining. Nominees are asked to provide contact and demographic information, a statement of expenses, a statement describing financial need, and a statement on expected outcomes from attending the conference. Historically under-represented groups and first-time attendees will be given priority. The review committee will work to ensure awardees represent a diverse subset of the applicants, specifically across discipline/CUR Division and geographic location. Awardees will receive the conference grant as a rebate after their confirmed participation in the conference, and the submission of reimbursement paperwork.

The purpose of the NCI Mentored Research Scientist Development Award (K01) is to enhance the diversity of the NCI-funded cancer research workforce by supporting eligible individuals from groups that have been shown to be underrepresented in the biomedical, behavioral, social and clinical sciences. This FOA provides salary and research support for a sustained period of "protected time" for intensive research career development under the guidance of an experienced mentor, or sponsor. The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to encourage institutions with expertise and innovative strategies for developing research and mentoring opportunities for undergraduate students from backgrounds underrepresented in biomedical research to submit applications for 6 month planning grants for the NIH Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity (BUILD) initiative. The BUILD initiative aims to increase the diversity of the NIH-funded workforce by supporting collaborative programs that include novel approaches for enhancing undergraduate education, training, and mentorship, as well as infrastructure support and faculty development to facilitate those approaches. BUILD planning grants are intended to help institutions develop the necessary partnerships and infrastructure needed to be competitive for the BUILD initiative.

The NIH encourages institutions that seek to engage undergraduate students in innovative mentored research training programs to submit applications for cooperative agreement awards through the NIH Building Infrastructure Leading to Diversity (BUILD) initiative, one of three new Common Fund initiatives that together aim to enhance diversity in the biomedical, behavioral, clinical, and social sciences research workforce. Addressing a major leakage point in the research workforce pipeline, BUILD awards are intended to support the design and implementation of innovative programs, strategies and approaches to transform undergraduate research training and mentorship. BUILD awards will also support institutional and faculty development to further strengthen undergraduate research training environments.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) solicits applications from institutions/organizations to participate as "Minority/Underserved Community Sites" for the National Cancer Institute (NCI)-supported Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP). NCORP is a community-based research network that: Designs and conducts clinical trials and other human subject studies for adults and children in cancer control, prevention, screening, and care delivery, as well as quality-of-life studies embedded within treatment trials; Incorporates the needs of diverse populations such as, adolescents and young adults (AYAs), and the elderly; racial and ethnic minorities; sexual and gender minorities; and rural residents into studies and takes steps to enhance participation of these groups; Enhances patient and provider access to treatment and imaging trials conducted under the National Clinical Trials Network (NCTN); Integrates cancer disparities research within the community network. NCORP consists of three components each with its own FOA: NCORP Research Bases; NCORP Community Sites; and NCORP Minority/Underserved Community Sites (covered by this FOA). The NCORP Minority/Underserved Community Sites will accrue diverse patients/participants to NCI-approved, cancer control, prevention, and care delivery research studies designed by NCI's NCORP Research Bases as well as treatment trials within the National Clinical Trials Network Groups (NCTN).

The Mark Foundation Endeavor Awards support collaborative research projects that bring together investigators with diverse areas of expertise to tackle challenges in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer. These grants are awarded to teams of three or more investigators to generate and integrate data from diverse lines of research and transform those insights into advances for cancer patients that could not be achieved by individual efforts.

The NIH Director's New Innovator Award Program supports early stage investigators of exceptional creativity who propose highly innovative research projects with the potential to produce a major impact on broad, important areas relevant to the mission of NIH. For the program to support the best possible researchers and research, applications are sought which reflect the full diversity of the research workforce. As an initiative of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, the Aspiring Physicians & Research Scientists Conference is a two-and-a-half day enhancement program that focuses on science innovation and world-class care. Cleveland Clinic physician and research scientist-led presentations and mentoring/coaching sessions provide students a unique opportunity to interface with our world renowned staff. An abstract poster competition provides students the opportunity to showcase their research. Our target audience includes underrepresented minority science, math and pre-med college students. It is designed to increase representation of American Indian, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander physicians, research scientists, physician investigators and physician leaders. Applicants, who must be at least 18 years of age and currently enrolled in college majoring in math, science, or pre-med will be notified of acceptance via email by April 19, 2013. Research students interested in participating in the poster research scholarship competition must submit an abstract of their work by April 12, 2013. Applicants accepted to present their posters will be notified by email by April 19, 2013.

The goal of this NIEHS undergraduate research education R25 program is to support educational activities that enhance the diversity of the biomedical, behavioral and clinical research workforce in the environmental health sciences. To this end, this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) encourages the development of creative educational activities with a primary focus on research experiences for undergraduates at the junior and senior level.

This includes new capabilities to address issues related to pre-analytical degradation of targeted analytes during the collection, processing, handling, and/or storage of cancer-relevant biospecimens. The overall goal is to support the development of highly innovative technologies capable of maximizing or otherwise interrogating the quality and utility of biological samples used for downstream analyses. This FOA will support the development of tools, devices, instrumentation, and associated methods to preserve or protect sample integrity, or establish verification criteria for quality assessment/quality control and handling under diverse conditions. These technologies are expected to accelerate and/or enhance research in cancer biology, early detection and screening, clinical diagnosis, treatment, epidemiology, or address issues associated with cancer health disparities, by reducing pre-analytical variations that affect biospecimen sample quality.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) will award Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Institutional Research Training Grants (T32) to eligible, domestic institutions to enhance predoctoral and postdoctoral research training, including short-term research training, and help ensure that a diverse and highly trained workforce is available to meet the needs of the Nations biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research agenda. Research training programs will incorporate didactic, research, and career development components to prepare individuals for careers that will have a significant impact on the health-related research needs of the Nation. 

The program is designed to bring together diverse interdisciplinary groups with expertise in genetics/genomics, immunology, microbiology, and proteomics along with the more traditional areas of parturition research such as maternal fetal medicine, obstetrics, and pediatrics to address scientific issues related to preterm birth. The fund has committed $3 million for the initiative and anticipates awarding five grants of up to $600,000 over a four-year period ($150,000 per year).

The overall goal is to develop technologies capable of interrogating and/or maximizing the quality and utility of biospecimens or their derived samples for downstream analyses. This FOA will support the development of tools, devices, instrumentation, and associated methods to assess sample quality, preserve/protect sample integrity, and establish verification criteria for quality assessment/quality control and handling under diverse conditions. This FOA solicits R33 applications for projects where proof-of-principle of the proposed technology or methodology has already been established and supportive preliminary data are available. Projects proposing to use established technologies where the novelty resides in the biological or clinical question being pursued are an example of a topic not appropriate for this solicitation and will not be reviewed.
