    If the proposed project does not address any of the Overarching Challenges, the application should describe how the project will nevertheless address a critical need in the field of prostate cancer research and/or patient care. Proposed projects may include basic, translational, or clinical research, including clinical trials, but must demonstrate clinical relevance. The potential impact of the proposed research is expected to be near-term and it must be significant and go beyond an incremental advance.     This opportunity allows for young investigators to develop a research project, investigate a problem or question in prostate cancer research, and further their intellectual development as a prostate cancer researcher of the future. The postdoctoral investigator is considered the Principal Investigator (PI) of the application and must exhibit strong potential for, and commitment to, pursuing a career as an investigator at the forefront of prostate cancer research; however, the PI is not required to have previous prostate cancer research experience. Applications must include at least one Mentor, appropriate to the proposed research project, who has experience in prostate cancer research and mentoring as demonstrated by a record of active funding, recent publications, and successful mentorship. The primary Mentor can be a junior faculty member, in which case the PI is encouraged to include a secondary Mentor with a more robust track record in prostate cancer research and mentorship. The selected Mentor(s) should also demonstrate a clear commitment to the development of the PI toward independence as a prostate cancer researcher. The PI must outline an individualized, prostate cancer-focused researcher development plan. The researcher development plan should include a clearly articulated strategy for acquiring the necessary skills, competence, and expertise that will enable the PI to successfully complete the proposed research project and foster the PI's development as an independent prostate cancer researcher. An environment appropriate to the proposed mentoring and research project must be clearly described, although any deficiencies of resources and/or mentorship at the PI's institution can be mitigated through collaboration(s) with other institutions.

    A major focus of the Network must be placed on the acquisition and distribution of specimens in limited supply, such as: * Castration-resistant disease, metastatic disease, primary untreated "de novo" metastatic disease as defined by STAMPEDE or high-risk disease defined by CHAARTED, tumors of the aggressive variant phenotype * Disproportionately affected populations, defined by ethnicity or health service access (safety net, rural, settings) * Active surveillance populations * Longitudinal/sequential specimens The Network must also collect, store, and manage data derived from the distributed biospecimens, including images of the hematoxylin and eosin (H&E)-stained samples. Applications should describe how the development of the Network biorepository will enable the prostate cancer research community to address the FY17 PCRP Overarching Challenges and FY17 PCRP Focus Areas by utilizing Network biospecimens. Applications should propose a clearly defined mission that will guide the proposed Network's biospecimen collection, distribution, and data collection processes. The Network will consist of three to five Pathology Resource Sites and a Coordinating Center, which will also function as one of the Pathology Resource Sites. These organizations will be jointly responsible for developing and maintaining the biorepository for prostate cancer research.

Appropriations for the PRCRP from FY09 through FY16 totaled $199.8 million (M). The FY17 appropriation is $60M.

    TTSA supports hypothesis-driven translational studies. These studies should be associated with an ongoing or completed clinical trial and/or annotated biorepositories and focused on research for the next-phase clinical trial or future clinical application. The TTSA is intended to support advanced translational studies that have the potential for near-term outcomes that are based on results from clinical investigations. While funding for clinical trials is allowed, the TTSA is intended to fund correlative clinical research studies and not only a clinical trial. Research projects funded by the TTSA should address critical knowledge gaps in clinical outcomes, validate key research results, expand upon potentially transformative results, or investigate novel findings based on results from clinical research.

    This RFP seeks innovative ideas for high-risk, high-reward projects and/or seed funding necessary to demonstrate proof of concept before applying for larger grants. Projects could address any aspect of radiation oncology that falls within the scope of the priority research topic areas identified in the National Radiation Oncology Research Needs Assessment. Proposals should address the highest impact research questions for the field of radiation oncology. Knowledge derived from these studies should inform policy development or aim to improve outcomes in cancer treatment. The ROI seeks proposals that would lead to important research with practical applications for radiation oncology professionals and their patients. Special consideration will be given to proposals that are not otherwise fundable through traditional sources.
