Since its founding in 1979, the Skin Cancer Foundation has set the standard for educating the public and the medical community about skin cancer. The foundation is committed to reducing the incidence and mortality of the world's most common cancer, which is now occurring at epidemic levels. As part of this mission, the foundation is accepting proposals for its 2019 Research Grants Awards program. Two grants of $50,000 and one grant of $25,000 will be awarded to support one-year pilot research projects related to the disease. Researchers are invited to submit applications for projects to be conducted within the dermatology departments of medical institutions in the United States and Canada. The program is open to dermatology residents, fellows, and junior investigators.

The purpose of the program is to identify international cancer control practices that can be applied to our domestic programs. Program activities will focus on 1) the establishment or strengthening of high quality cancer registries through establishment of centers for excellence in U.S. territories and other CDC global focus regions, 2) technical exchanges between CDC and the awardee, 3) consultations from global experts to help inform CDC's priority cancer activities, and 4) collaboration on the development and dissemination of monographs and other publications that promote evidence-based prevention for cervical (and other HPV-related), breast, lung, skin, colorectal and other types of cancer. Together, these activities represent an important opportunity for CDC to strengthen its programs in cancer prevention and control.

 The purpose of this project is to identify skin physiology characteristics that differ between healthy and skin disease population groups and incorporate them into dermal physiologically-based pharmacokinetic models to improve their predictability. The models developed will be utilized to perform virtual bioequivalence assessments between brand name and generic drug products to inform regulatory decisions relating to the development of generic topical dermatological drug products and transdermal delivery systems.       

The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) is seeking small grant (R03) applications to stimulate and facilitate the entry of promising new investigators into research on arthritis and musculoskeletal and skin diseases and injuries. This FOA will provide support for pilot research that is likely to lead to a subsequent individual research project grant (R01).

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to encourage Research Project Grant (R01) applications to pursue clinical observational (CO) studies to obtain data necessary for designing clinical studies for musculoskeletal, rheumatic, or skin diseases or conditions. A future clinical study may include a clinical trial or an observational study. Research data from observational studies supported by this FOA can enhance clinical study design by providing essential information about disease symptoms, stages and timing of disease progression, comorbid conditions, availability of potential research participants, and outcomes that are important to patients. They also can facilitate efforts to develop and/or validate objective biomarkers or subjective outcome measures for use in a future clinical study. Applicants to this FOA are encouraged to propose studies that address significant obstacles or questions in the design of a clinical project, such as determining the appropriate primary or secondary outcome measures, or identifying the stages of disease during which patients are most likely to respond to an intervention. Only observational studies will be supported through this FOA.
