This NOFO will support achievement of national targets for 2018 antiretroviral therapy (ART) scale-up towards the UNAIDS Fast Track Targets in Ukraine. The recipient will implement innovative and effective recruitment and case management models for persons who inject drugs (PWID) and men who have sex with men (MSM) at the community level. These innovative changes will increase uptake of HIV community based testing and increase ART initiation for these populations. The recipient will pilot risk network-based testing using point-of-care recency assays to link recently infected PWID to care. The project will focus on the six regions with the highest HIV burden (Dnipropetrovsk, Mykolayiv, Odesa, government controlled areas (GCA) of Donetsk, Kyiv City, and Kherson) and continue to work in six additional medium burden oblasts (Cherkasy, Poltava, Chernihiv, Zaporizhzhya, Kirovohrad, and Kyiv). The recipient will also increase the capacity of the Government of Ukraine’s Center for Public Health (CPH) and regional monitoring and evaluation (M&E) centers specialists to conduct data analysis using statistical software and build institutional capacity to conduct economic evaluations of HIV interventions. Illustrative strategic information (SI) activities include development of trainings to support the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the newly established CPH in using statistical software, routine analysis of surveillance data, study design, and research protocol development.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), encompassing Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, is characterized by chronic inflammation of gastrointestinal tract. In 2015, approximately three million US adults reported having a diagnosis of IBD and the estimated number has increased greatly from 1.8 million since 1999. While the exact cause is unknown, the severity and progression of the disease largely impacts the patients’ quality of life and imposes huge financial burden to the US healthcare system. The purpose of this announcement is to 1) establish a new IBD registry to estimate incidence of IBD in the adult and pediatric populations and extrapolate to the US population; 2) describe the natural history and outcomes of IBD; 3) determine racial/ethnic variation in the detection and management of IBD; and 4) identify evidence-based strategies to improve disease outcomes. The results are anticipated to enhance understanding of the impact of IBD on the overall health of affected persons and the impact of various clinical practices and healthcare delivery approaches on the disease outcomes.

This FOA provides resources to support (a) pilot or feasibility studies of new or adapted interventions to prevent HIV infection among populations where substance use may be a contributing factor; (b) pilot or feasibility studies of new or adapted interventions to improve the care of HIV infection among populations where substance use is prevalent, including interventions that integrate treatment for substance use disorders and HIV infection; or (c) pilot or feasibility studies to increase the scale, uptake, delivery, and/or quality of HIV prevention or care interventions with established evidence of efficacy

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages applications focused on 1) advancing understanding of mechanisms by which mental health affects HIV prevention and treatment in order to identify modifiable intervention targets; and 2) developing and testing expanded interventions to improve both mental health and HIV outcomes along the entire HIV care continuum (from HIV testing to viral suppression PA-18-274 uses the R01 grant mechanism while PA-18-275 uses the R21 mechanism. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages implementation research projects designed in partnership with global and domestic service providers, to target the particular needs in the selected community, to achieve the 90/90/90 HIV prevention and treatment targets identified by HIV/AIDS global leadership. The targets for HIV testing are that 90% of all persons living with HIV know their status, for treatment initiation that 90% of those diagnosed receive timely and effective antiretroviral treatment (ART), and for optimal treatment and preventive benefit that 90% of those on treatment achieve sustained viral suppression. PA-18-279 uses the R01 grant mechanism while PA-18-280 uses the R21 mechanism. Supported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), EMF is inviting applications for its EMF/NIDA Mentor-Facilitated Training Award in Substance Use Disorders Science Dissemination. The award seeks works that addresses the overarching goals of EMF, including the promotion of knowledge of evidence-based SUD treatment among healthcare providers; the dissemination of substance use disorder research finding; the adoption of evidence-based approaches in medical settings, and the facilitation of the academic growth and development of future leaders in SUD management.

TheMacrosystems Biology and NEON-Enabled Science (MSB-NES): Research on Biological Systems at Regional to Continental Scalesprogram will support quantitative, interdisciplinary, systems-oriented research on biosphere processes and their complex interactions with climate, land use, and changes in species distributionatregional to continental scales as well as training activities to broaden participation of researchers in Macrosystems Biology and NEON-EnabledScience. Proposers are encouraged to use NEON resources, and proposals for substantive and innovative NEON-enabled research will be prioritized for funding.Substantive NEON-enabled projects rely on data and/or samples collected by NEON, co-locate research activities at NEON sites, and/or develop tools that will explicitly enhance the processing, use, and/or analysis of NEON data or collections within the context of Macrosystems Biology research questions.

The National Institute on Aging is seeking applications to develop systems biology approaches to understand the basic biology underpinning neurodegeneration which might ultimately contribute to Alzheimer's disease or related dementias, using non-mammalian laboratory animal models. It is expected that research carried under the auspices of this FOA will lead to discovery of new mechanisms that provoke neurodegeneration and to new molecular pathways that might be involved in causing, amplifying or protecting against neurodegeneration. Applications should propose to use established non-mammalian laboratory animals which have a history of contributions to our understanding of neurobiology or aging biology.  

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's (AHRQ) mission is to produce evidence to make health care safer, higher quality, more accessible, equitable, and affordable, and to work within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and with other partners to make sure that the evidence is understood and used. AHRQ's Center for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety (CQuIPS) is addressing patient safety and medication research by focusing on the safe usage of medications.  This perspective centers on how medications move through the health care system and how this systemic process can be improved so that patients are not harmed, while health care delivery is improved.  CQuIPS encourages the involvement of all members of the health care team, especially patients and families, nurses, pharmacists, technicians (pharmacy and medication administration technicians), health care administrators, risk managers, and physicians across all settings of care, including in the home. This FOA will fund investigative research demonstration projects that examine the effective implementation of processes, policies, and behaviors that support safe use of medication as well as its sustainment and dissemination.

This FOA will provide support for assays (and associated data analysis) of repository-held samples for studies focused on an NIDDK relevant disease.  The review of applications to this FOA will consider both access to repository-held samples and funding for assays using the samples.  These studies are expected to generate scientific discoveries on disease mechanisms, disease pathogenic processes, disease progression, or clinical responses.  Projects that make good use of the associated data from the clinical trials and studies, the original intent of the clinical study and/or trial are highly encouraged.  Exploratory studies and discovery research are encouraged especially when samples are not severely limited, the work is justified, and the goal is consistent with the original intent of the clinical research.

The participating NIH Institutes and Centers invite Research Project Grant (R01) applications to develop assays for high throughput screening (HTS) for use in Probe and Pre-therapeutic Discovery. Through this FOA, NIH wishes to stimulate research in 1) developing assays for specific biological targets and disease mechanisms relevant to the mission of participating NIH Institutes with the intent to screen for small molecule compounds that show potential as probes for use in advancing knowledge about the known targets, identifying new targets, or as pre-therapeutic leads; and 2) establishing collaboration with screening centers that have the requisite expertise and experience needed in implementation of HTS assays for the discovery and development of small molecule chemical probes. This FOA seeks to establish a stream of scientifically and technologically outstanding assays for screening by the NIH Molecular Libraries Production Centers Network (MLPCN) in the Molecular Libraries Program (MLP) and other academic centers. One important criterion for this initiative is novelty, so applicants are therefore encouraged to avoid focusing on areas and approaches that have been extensively targeted in other settings. Assays should be relevant to the scope of research in at least one of the participating NIH Institutes.

In light of the recent emergence of the lethal Ebola virus in the US, the National Science Foundation (NSF) is accepting proposals to conduct non-medical, non-clinical care research that can be used immediately to better understand how to model and understand the spread of Ebola, educate about prophylactic behaviors, and encourage the development of products, processes, and learning that can address this global challenge.

The purpose of this award is to support outstanding basic and/or clinical researchers with the vision and expertise to translate research discoveries into medications for the treatment of Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) stemming from tobacco, cannabis, cocaine, methamphetamine, heroin, or prescription opiate use.Eligible applicants must demonstrate the ability to develop molecules with the potential to treat SUDs and advance them in the drug development continuum. The ultimate goal of this FOA is to bring molecules closer to FDA approval.

The purpose of this FOA is to solicit applications to expand research activities funded under RFA-AT-18-002 and RFA-DA-18-005 on the impact of interventions designed to improve adherence to Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) or linking individuals with Opioid Use Disorders (OUD) who receive naloxone for the reversal of overdose to MAT within the context of states use of the SAMHSA Opioid STR grant funds authorized under the 21st Century Cures Act. Expansion of research activities should increase the generalizability of findings to allow for more rapid dissemination and implementation of successful interventions. Examples of additional activities include but are not limited to adding recruitment/study sites, increasing the overall sample size, targeting under-represented populations, and adjusting for longer follow-up.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to leverage SAMHSA funding for tribal responses to the opioid crisis by supporting culturally relevant research built upon projects supported by SAMHSA or CDC. The topic of the research project will vary depending on how funding is used in tribal communities. Potential topics include, but are not limited to, studies of evidence-based interventions adapted to enhance their feasibility, acceptability, availability and/or effectiveness in tribal communities; assessing the effectiveness of interventions with an evidence base from another population when implemented to address the opioid crisis and associated comorbidities (e.g. alcohol use and mental health disorders) in tribal communities; augmenting hypothesis-based data collection to inform intervention adaptation and implementation; or epidemiologic studies that assess the reach or implementation of interventions. Research supported through this FOA will be performed in two phases.

Supported by the NIH Common Fund (Common Fund) Science of Behavior Change (SOBC) Program, this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) solicits competitive revision (formerly known as a competitive supplement) applications to NIH-supported clinical trials awarded as research project R34 grants. The goal of the SOBC Program is to advance a mechanisms-focused, experimental medicine approach to behavior change research. Funded projects in the SOBC Research Network (https://commonfund.nih.gov/behaviorchange/fundedresearch) have developed experimental manipulations, assays, and/or measures (hereafter referred to as assays for brevity) to support an experimental medicine approach to behavior change research. The SOBC Measures Repository is accessible from the SOBC Research Network Open Science Framework (OSF) page at https://osf.io/zp7b4. The goal of this FOA is to accelerate the adaptation, validation, and translation of SOBC Research Network assays for use in ongoing clinical trials. This FOA calls for the integration of SOBC Research Network assays into active NIH-supported clinical trials of drugs, devices, procedures, or behavior modifications. As such, the active NIH-supported clinical trial used to respond to this FOA does not have to be a behavior change trial or identify behavior change as a primary outcome. The integration of SOBC Research Network assays into ongoing clinical trials will accelerate the development of interventions and experimental manipulations that have been shown to engage specific mechanisms of behavior change and the development of assays that verify engagement of those behavior change targets.

The NIH Research Education Program (R25) supports research education activities in the mission areas of the NIH. The over-arching goal of this NIAAA/NIDA R25 program is to support educational activities that foster a better understanding of biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research on alcohol and other substance use disorders and their implications. To accomplish the stated over-arching goal, this FOA will support creative educational activities with a primary focus on Outreach. Specifically, this FOA will support projects designed to engage practicing health care professionals in education about current and emerging knowledge derived from scientific research on the neurobiology, epidemiology, prevention, and/or treatment of alcohol and other substance use disorders and related health conditions.
