This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) for R34 applications seeks to support: (a) pilot and/or feasibility testing of innovative new, revised, or adapted prevention intervention approaches to prevent or delay the initiation and onset of drug and alcohol use, the progression to misuse or problem use or alcohol and other substance use disorder, reduce drinking and driving and deaths related to impaired driving, and the drug- or alcohol-related acquisition or transmission of HIV infection and viral hepatitis among diverse populations and settings; and, (b) pre-trial feasibility and acceptability testing for prevention services and systems research. To foster innovative collaborative approaches to research projects that propose novel pairings of investigators from at least two broadly disparate disciplines. The proposal must focus on the collaborative relationship, such that the scientific objectives could not be achieved without the efforts of at least two co-principal investigators and their respective disciplines. The combination and integration of studies may be inclusive of basic, clinical, population, behavioral, and/or translational research. Projects must include at least one Co-PI from a field outside cardiovascular disease and stroke. This award is also intended to foster collaboration between established and early- or mid-career investigators. Applications by existing collaborators are permitted, provided that the proposal is for a new and novel idea or approach that has not been funded before. Multidisciplinary research broadly related to cardiovascular function, cardiovascular disease, and stroke, or to related clinical, basic science, bioengineering, biotechnology, or public health problems. Proposals are encouraged from all basic science disciplines as well as epidemiological, behavioral, community and clinical investigations that bear on cardiovascular and stroke problems. AHA awards are open to the array of academic and health professionals. This includes but is not limited to all academic disciplines (biology, chemistry, engineering, mathematics, technology, physics, etc.) and all health-related professions (physicians, nurses, advanced practice nurses, pharmacists, dentists, physical and occupational therapists, statisticians, nutritionists, behavioral scientists, health attorneys, engineers, etc.).

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) supports the development of PET radioligands that identify proteinopathies or pathological processes associated with the human biology of Alzheimer's disease related dementias (ADRDs). Activities supported under this FOA include, but are not limited to the in vitro screening of existing ligands against human ADRD brain tissue, medicinal chemistry support for development of new compounds and improvement of existing ligand specificity and selectivity, initial screening of ligands in appropriate animal models, and radioligand formulation and first-in-human testing. The Center without Walls should encompass research that will move promising ligands through in vitro and in vivo optimization to first-in-human studies. Applications must include an administrative core, a medicinal chemistry core, a clinical core, a scientific governance structure, and a minimum of two research projects with milestone plans that address workflows for screening of existing and newly derived ligands against human ADRD tissue and appropriate animal models. Synergy must be evident among Center research projects and cores, such that successful completion of the aims could not be accomplished without the Center structure. This FOA is in response to the Alzheimer's Disease Related Dementias (ADRD) challenges outlined in the 2016 update to the National Plan to Address Alzheimer's Disease.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites qualified research institution to seek funds to modernize existing research facilities that focus on HIV/AIDS-related research. Institutions that support non-human primate colonies are encouraged to apply to update the animal housing infrastructure and research-dedicated space needed for the animal-related research efforts. Any request must be justified by the needs of NIH-funded investigators who used the laboratory space or rely on the animals raised and care for by the facilities. Applications for regular upkeep and repairs are not appropriate for this FOA.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to provide support for research designed to optimize smoking cessation treatment among people living with HIV (PLWH) in the United States (U.S.). Responsive applications must propose research that will be conducted with PLWH and will inform efforts to reduce the incidence of tobacco-related disease and death among PLWH. Research may address the behavioral and sociocultural factors and conditions that are associated with cigarette smoking among PLWH, and may also address smoking-related health disparities among PLWH, considering the heterogeneity across the various subgroups of PLWH.

This FOA will invite U01 applications in the specific area of cancer immunotherapy-related adverse events. Investigators are encouraged to submit applications that focus on mechanisms of immune reactivity/tolerance and/or autoimmune pathways that could be applied to improving immunotherapeutic approaches while simultaneously eliminating or reducing the severity of inflammatory or autoimmune responses. A related area of interest is studies designed to enhance the target specificity of immunotherapeutic reagents, to reduce or prevent irAEs. An additional synergistic focus of interest is the identification of predictive biomarkers of cancer patients at risk for developing irAEs. Understanding risk factors for developing an irAE would better inform patient stratification at the start of therapy and influence clinical monitoring. Achieving the goals of the RFA should establish a deeper understanding of the origins and activation pathways leading to inflammatory or autoimmune adverse events that currently limit the use of various immunotherapy regimens in patients.

The purpose of the FOA is to support the structural characterization of protein species associated with Alzheimer's Disease Related Dementias (ADRDs) through the utilization of cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) and cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) of proteins expressed in human tissue and cell sources. Studies in response to this RFA should also include the development of research tools and resources to further characterize/validate the protein species. This FOA is in response to the Alzheimer's Disease Related Dementias (ADRD) challenges outlined in the 2016 update to the National Plan to Address Alzheimer's Disease.

The purpose of this Kirschstein-NRSA predoctoral fellowship (F31) award is to enhance the diversity of the health-related research workforce by supporting the research training of predoctoral students from population groups that have been shown to be underrepresented in the biomedical, behavioral, or clinical research workforce, including underrepresented racial and ethnic groups and those with disabilities. Through this award program, promising predoctoral students will obtain individualized, mentored research training from outstanding faculty sponsors while conducting well-defined research projects in scientific health-related fields relevant to the missions of the participating NIH Institutes and Centers. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) solicits applications from qualified academic institutions in Puerto Rico whose non-human primate research facilities were damaged by Hurricane Maria. Institutions may request funds to recover, restore, and modernize the physical infrastructure of non-human primate facilities. The rebuilt structures shall comply with the relevant engineering standards applicable to the requirements of the environment, the geographical location, animal welfare and care, and research-related demands. Any request must be justified by the needs of the HIV/AIDS-related NIH-funded research projects that use non-human primates raised, maintained, and housed in these facilities.

The Melanoma Research Foundation is accepting applications from emerging and established scientific investigators for research projects that explore new avenues in melanoma biology, prevention and treatments, with the goal of finding a cure. The foundation makes grants in four areas: Career Development Awards, Established Investigator Awards, Career Investigator CURE OM Awards, and Established Investigator CURE OM Awards. Career Development Awards provide funding of up to $50,000 a year for two years to junior investigators who are beginning a research career emphasizing melanoma-related projects and have not yet secured strong federal funding for their research. Established Investigator Awards provide funding of up to $100,000 a year for two years to established melanoma researchers or senior researchers working in closely related fields who wish to move into melanoma research. Career Development CURE OM Awards provide funding of up to $50,000 a year for two years to junior investigators in the ocular/uveal melanoma field. This FOA invites applications on descriptive, basic and translational studies of APOE2 to delineate the functional effects of ApoE2 on healthy aging of the brain and other tissues. The primary focus is on the "APOE2-Aging-AD" relationship and the mechanistic effects of the protective variant on aging and potential interaction/cross talk between tissues in the aging process and AD. These studies are expected to generate new mechanistic insights that involve brain and/or other organs and assist in the identification of potential prognostic and diagnostic markers and therapeutic targets for AD and other age-related cognitive disorders. Eventually, the findings from these studies could lead to translational research opportunities not only to prevent or delay the onset of AD, but also to protect against multiple age-related conditions.  

AOSSM, in partnership with Sanofi, offers a research grant program to fund investigations related to early osteoarthritis (OA) and/or prevention of OA progression. This grant reflects the growing recognition of the importance of osteoarthritis within sports medicine and orthopaedics. The grant will be for $50,000 to support either a clinical research study or a lab/basic science project. Proposed studies need not relate specifically to sports injuries and should also have broad applicability to OA in the general population.
