The Postdoctoral Assembly (PDA) of the Society of Toxicology is pleased to announce the Best Postdoctoral Publication Awards (BPPA). These awards were created to recognize talented postdoctoral researchers who have recently published exceptional papers in the field of toxicology. Applications are reviewed by the PDA Executive Board and a committee containing appropriate scientific expertise. The review process follows National Institutes of Health (NIH) conflict of interest policy, confidentiality, and nondisclosure policies. Three awards, each consisting of a plaque and $250, are presented at the PDA Luncheon during the SOT Annual Meeting.

The NINDS, with other NIH Institutes and Centers participating in the BRAIN Initiative, intends to publish "BRAIN Initiative Advanced Postdoctoral Career Transition Award to Promote Diversity (K99/R00)." The program is designed to increase biomedical research workforce diversity and foster a strong cohort of new, highly skilled and well trained, NIH-supported, independent investigators from underrepresented groups working in research areas supported by the BRAIN Initiative, as highlighted in BRAIN 2025: A Scientific Vision. It is designed to facilitate a timely transition of outstanding postdoctoral researchers with a research and/or clinical doctorate degree from mentored, postdoctoral research positions to independent, tenure-track or equivalent faculty positions. This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants sufficient time to develop meaningful mentoring teams and responsive projects. The FOA is expected to be published in April 2018 with an expected application due date in June 2018. This FOA will utilize the K99/R00 funding activity. Details of the planned FOA are provided below. Research Initiative Details The BRAIN Initiative K99/R00 award is intended for women and members of underrepresented groups who are working in research areas supported by the BRAIN Initiative, who have no more than five years of postdoctoral research experience, and who require at least 12 months of mentored research training and career development (K99 phase) before transitioning to the independent research (R00) phase of the program.

The NIGMS Postdoctoral Research Associate (PRAT) Programs overarching goal is to provide high quality postdoctoral research training in the basic biomedical sciences, in NIH intramural research laboratories, to a diverse group of postdoctoral fellows to prepare them for leadership positions in biomedical careers. The research projects proposed should focus on NIGMS mission-related areas of basic biomedical science. These include cell biology, biophysics, genetics, developmental biology, pharmacology, physiology, biological chemistry, computational biology, technology development and bioinformatics. Studies employing model organisms are encouraged

The purpose of the BRAIN Initiative Fellows (F32) program is to enhance the research training of promising postdoctorates, early in their postdoctoral training period, who have the potential to become productive investigators in research areas that will advance the goals of the BRAIN Initiative. Applications are encouraged in any research area that is aligned with the BRAIN Initiative, including neuroethics. Applicants are expected to propose research training in an area that complements their predoctoral research. Formal training in quantitative perspectives and analytical tools is expected to be an integral part of the proposed research training plan. In order to maximize the training potential of the F32 award, this program encourages applications from individuals who have not yet completed their terminal doctoral degree and who expect to do so within 12 months of the application due date. On the application due date, candidates may not have completed more than 6 months of postdoctoral training.  

The Directorate for Biological Sciences (BIO) awards Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Biology to recent recipients of the doctoral degree for research and training in selected areas supported by BIO and with special goals for human resource development in biology.  The fellowships encourage independence at an early stage of the research career to permit Fellows to pursue their research and training goals in the most appropriate research locations regardless of the availability of funding for the Fellows at that site.  For FY 2013, these BIO programs are (1) Broadening Participation in Biology; (2) Intersections of Biology and Mathematical and Physical Sciences and Engineering; (3) National Plant Genome Initiative Postdoctoral Research Fellowships; and (4) International Postdoctoral Research Fellowships in Biology.  These areas change periodically as new scientific and infrastructure opportunities present themselves. For this reason, this solicitation will be changed as necessary to reflect the areas being funded.

On the application due date, candidates may not have completed more than 12 months of postdoctoral training.

The purpose of this award is to support phased transition of outstanding graduate students from groups underrepresented in the biomedical, clinical, behavioral and social sciences research enterprise from graduate work to postdoctoral research positions in Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial (DOC) research. The first phase (F99) will support the final two years of graduate research training for individuals in PhD or dual degree clinician scientist programs. Following graduation and attainment of a postdoctoral research position, the second phase (K00) will provide support for up to three years of mentored postdoctoral research.

The NIGMS Postdoctoral Research Associate Training (PRAT) Program's overarching goal is to provide high quality postdoctoral research training in the basic biomedical sciences to a diverse group of postdoctoral fellows in NIH Intramural research laboratories, and to prepare them for leadership positions in biomedical careers.  Research projects proposed should focus on areas within the NIGMS mission, which include but are not limited to biological chemistry, biophysics, bioinformatics, cellular and molecular biology, computational biosciences, developmental biology, genetics, immunology, neuroscience, pharmacology, physiology, and technology development.  In addition to the laboratory experience, the PRAT program provides a structured training environment with extensive career and professional development, mentoring, and networking opportunities planned and supported by the program.

The Colgate-Palmolive Company sponsors the Colgate-Palmolive Postdoctoral Fellowship Award in In Vitro Toxicology through the Society of Toxicology to advance the development of alternatives to animal testing in toxicological research. The award is given annually and includes stipend and research-related costs (up to $44,000) for one year. Postdoctoral trainees in their first year of study beyond the PhD, MD, or DVM degree who are at academic institutions, federal/national laboratories, or research institutes worldwide may apply. The award application deadline is October 9 of the year prior to the year in which the fellowship is awarded.

The purpose of this FOA is to seek out, identify and support bold and innovative approaches designed to broaden graduate and postdoctoral training, such that training programs reflect the range of career options that Ph.D. graduate students and postdoctoral (regardless of funding source) pursue and that are required for a robust biomedical, behavioral, social and clinical research enterprise. Collaborations with non-academic partners are encouraged to ensure that experts from a broad spectrum of research-intensive and research-related careers contribute to coursework, rotations, internships or other forms of exposure. This program will establish a new paradigm for graduate and postdoctoral training; awardee institutions will work together to define needs and share best practices.

A five-year grant of up to $600,000 will be awarded to support a highly promising postdoctoral or clinical research fellow who is in the mentored research phase and ready to transition to an independent research career.

The American Fund for Alternatives to Animal Research and the New England Anti-Vivisection Society are offering a $40,000, one-year postdoctoral fellowship grant (with possible renewal) to a woman interested in using alternatives to animal methods in the investigation of women's health or sex differences. The award is available to female postdoctoral scientists researching women's health or sex differences whose research involves the development, validation, or use of non-animal alternatives. Applicants must be interested in using or promoting non-animal alternatives in research.

The Autism Science Foundation is inviting applications for its Pre- and Postdoctoral Training Awards and Medical School Gap Year Research Training Awards from graduate students, medical students, and postdoctoral fellows interested in pursuing careers in basic and clinical research relevant to autism spectrum disorders. The proposed training must be scientifically linked to autism and may be broadened to include training in a closely related area of scientific research, including but not limited to human behavior across the lifespan (language, learning, behavior, communication, social function, motor skills and planning, epilepsy, sleep, repetitive disorders); neurobiology (anatomy, development, neuroimaging); pharmacology; neuropathology; genetics; epigenetics; genomics; epigenomics; immunology; molecular and cellular mechanisms; studies employing model organisms and systems; and studies of treatment and service delivery.

This award supports the postdoctoral career development of individuals preparing to engage in research that will bridge the gap between experimental and computational approaches in genomic and biomedical studies. Applicants must have a firm commitment from a sponsor/mentor at an accredited U.S. university. The sponsor/mentor of the postdoctoral program must describe how the multidisciplinary goals of the research training program will be accomplished, and provide assurance that key collaborating mentors endorse and are willing to support the training plan. Applicants must 1) hold a PhD in a field of study logically or functionally related to the proposed postdoctoral activities or 2) expect to receive the PhD before activating the award. All applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

1) Liver Scholar Awards: Three-year grants of up to $225,000 will be awarded in support of basic science research projects. The goal of the program is to provide young scientists with support at an early stage of their careers to bridge the gap between completion of their research training and attainment of status as an independent research scientist. While applications on all liver-related research topics will be considered, preference will be given to projects related to biliary atresia and primary biliary cirrhosis. 2) Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Award: One-year grants of up to $12,500 will be awarded to support MD, PhD, and MD/PhD postdoctoral fellows in their first or second year of appointment as a postdoctoral research fellow or trainee and who seek professional development, additional training, and experience in liver research. The foundation encourages projects related to transplantation, autoimmune hepatitis, hepatitis, primary sclerosing cholangitis, biliary atresia, and primary biliary cirrhosis. 3) Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC) Fund for the Cure Award: The PBC Fund for the Cure Award is a one-year award of $100,000 that provides support for a faculty member to initiate a project that addresses a novel and important research question related to the process by which primary biliary cholangitis attacks the liver. The proposed investigation may involve basic, clinical, or translational research. The award supports investigational work related but not limited to pathophysiological studies, clinical trials and applications, or assessment of new diagnostic and/or therapeutic modalities.

The Taking Flight Award seeks to promote the careers of young epilepsy investigators, enabling them to develop a research focus independent of their mentor(s). In 2018, CURE will issue one request for proposals for the Taking Flight Award. Please refer to the LOI guidelines for an overview of CURE's 2018 priority areas, application instructions and FAQs. The American Diabetes Association's Core Research Program funds research with novel and innovative hypotheses in any area relevant to the etiology or pathophysiology of diabetes.  To that end, the ADA is inviting applications for its Training Awards, including a Postdoctoral Fellowship (PDF) and Minority Postdoctoral Fellowship (PMF). Through the PDF program, a salary stipend of up to $55,581 per year for up to three years, plus $5,000 annually for training and a $5,000 fringe benefit allowance, will be awarded to postdoctoral researchers in support of high-quality training in an environment conducive to beginning a career in diabetes research.

The purpose of the NCI Predoctoral to Postdoctoral Fellow Transition Award (F99/K00) is to encourage and retain outstanding graduate students recognized by their institutions for their high potential and strong interest in pursuing careers as independent cancer researchers. The award will facilitate the transition of talented graduate students into successful cancer research postdoctoral appointments, and provide opportunities for career development activities relevant to their long-term career goals of becoming independent cancer researchers.
