The BTDD program supports the development of technologies once their feasibility has been established and the dissemination of these technologies to the wider biomedical research community. The program encourages investigators to propose projects that address any of the biomedical research areas within the mission of NIGMS. The Centers are charged to make their technologies available to the research community in a sustainable manner, to provide user training, and to disseminate the Centers technologies and experimental results. Centers should be at the leading edge of their field with respect to both technology development and engagement of the relevant research community. Potential applicants are strongly encouraged to contact NIGMS staff at least 16 weeks prior to the application due date to ascertain whether it is appropriate for an NIGMS BTDD Center.

The Vilcek Foundation will award three prizes of $35,000 each to young foreign-born biomedical scientists who demonstrate outstanding early achievement. Eligible work may be in basic, applied, and/or translational biomedical science.

The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) will award Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (RISE) research education grants (R25) to institutions focused on developing new or expanding existing effective institutional developmental programs designed to academically and scientifically prepare underrepresented (UR) students in the biomedical or behavioral sciences for competitive research careers. The RISE program provides grants to institutions with significant enrollment of students from populations underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences that propose well-integrated developmental activities designed to strengthen students academic preparation, research training and professional skills that are critical to the completion of the Ph.D. degree in the biomedical and/or behavioral sciences.

The NIGMS Postdoctoral Research Associate (PRAT) Programs overarching goal is to provide high quality postdoctoral research training in the basic biomedical sciences, in NIH intramural research laboratories, to a diverse group of postdoctoral fellows to prepare them for leadership positions in biomedical careers. The research projects proposed should focus on NIGMS mission-related areas of basic biomedical science. These include cell biology, biophysics, genetics, developmental biology, pharmacology, physiology, biological chemistry, computational biology, technology development and bioinformatics. Studies employing model organisms are encouraged

The Maximizing Access to Research Careers (MARC) Undergraduate Student Training in Academic Research (U-STAR) program is designed to provide structured training programs to prepare high-achieving, underrepresented students for doctoral programs in biomedical research fields. Programmatic activities should include authentic research experiences, academic enhancements, skills development, and mentoring. Institutions eligible for MARC U-STAR grants are those with significant enrollments of honors students from groups underrepresented in the biomedical sciences. The long-term goal of the program is to  enhance the pool of underrepresented students earning baccalaureate and Ph.D degrees in biomedical research fields and ultimately to contribute to the diversification of the nation's scientific workforce.

The purpose of the NLM Career Development Award (K01) in Biomedical Informatics is to provide support and "protected time" (up to three years) for an intensive career development experience in biomedical informatics leading to research independence. NLM invites K01 applications from junior investigators, who have either a health professional or research doctorate and who are in the first two years of their initial position, at an assistant professor level (or equivalent). Candidates who received their training at one of NLM's university-based biomedical informatics training programs are encouraged to apply.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to promote collaborative biomedical research between the United States (U.S.) and Brazil under the U.S.-Brazil Collaborative Biomedical Research Program. Research areas supported under this program include allergy, immunology, and infectious diseases, including HIV/AIDS and its co-morbidities; neurological disorders and stroke, and environmental health sciences.  This program represents an outstanding opportunity for U.S. and Brazil scientists to pursue collaborative research partnerships that address public health topics of mutual benefit to both nations.    

The goal of the Initiative for Maximizing Student Development (IMSD) program is to develop a diverse pool of scientists earning a Ph.D., who have the skills to successfully transition into careers in the biomedical research workforce. The long-term goal of the program is to enhance the diversity of biomedical research scientists in the Nations workforce. This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) provides support to eligible, domestic institutions to develop and implement effective, evidence-based approaches to biomedical training and mentoring that will keep pace with the rapid evolution of the research enterprise. NIGMS expects that the proposed research training programs will incorporate didactic, research, and career development elements to prepare trainees for careers that will have a significant impact on the health-related research needs of the Nation. This program is limited to applications from training programs at research-intensive institutions (i.e., those with a 3-year average of NIH Research Project Grant funding equal to or above $7.5 million total costs).

Recognizing that scientific and technological endeavors were becoming increasingly international, the foundation decided to facilitate the development of biomedical engineers with international experience and expertise. To serve this objective, the Whitaker International Fellows and Scholar program was initiated in 2005 by a fifteen-year endowment to the Institute of International Education. In the years since, the program has enabled nearly two hundred young biomedical engineers to spend one or two years overseas studying, doing research, and participating in collaborative projects. In accordance with the original plan, the last group of grantees received support through 2018. To further promote the overall program objective, in 2018 several grantees received funding to pursue initiatives of their own design. That set of activities, now designated as Concluding Initiative #1, will end at the end of 2020.

NCATS plans to support the research, development and testing of up to three biomedical reasoning tool prototypes for the Biomedical Data Translator for an estimated $1,000,000 total costs each. NCATS is utilizing a three-step application process (challenge-concept-proposal) for this expedited program. The duration of each award will be less than one year. All awardees will be expected to collaborate and cooperate with NCATS staff, one another and potentially other contributors to the overall program to maximize the exploration of the potential capabilities of Translator and to understand technical feasibility and challenges of having multiple groups build a single resource. All U.S. and foreign organizations and U.S. citizens are eligible to apply. This funding opportunity is open to U.S. and foreign organizations, including academic institutions and commercial entities; subcontracts are allowed. U.S. citizens may also apply as individuals and may be direct recipients of an award. Non-citizen individuals residing in the U.S. or foreign country not affiliated with either a U.S. or foreign organization are not eligible to be direct recipients of an award. Successful completion of the application process will require applicants to have specific skills related to translational research and software development. Applicants need to demonstrate technical skills, including familiarity with web communication protocols, a variety of programming languages and software stack, and general algorithmic techniques in the areas of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and knowledge engineering, as well as problem solving skills, especially creativity and persistence. Applicants familiar with languages and packages most useful for solving different tasks, the entire challenge process may take between 2 and 8 hours to complete.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) solicits applications to establish a Stakeholder Engagement and Program Coordination Center (SEPCC) to coordinate the required activities of the Common Fund Metabolomics Program Consortium; to engage the stakeholder community in identifying and developing strategies to address outstanding concerns in the application of metabolomics to biomedical research; and to promote use of Consortium resources by the greater biomedical research community. The Common Fund Metabolomics Program views community engagement and multi-directional communication as essential to overcome challenges in realizing the potential of metabolomics in biomedical research.

The NIH Research Education Program (R25) supports research education activities in the mission areas of the NIH. The over-arching goal of this R25 program is to support educational activities that complement and/or enhance the training of a workforce to meet the nation's biomedical, behavioral and clinical research needs. To accomplish the stated over-arching goal, this FOA will support creative educational activities with a primary focus on developing courses for skills development - specifically, exportable training modules designed to enhance the rigor and reproducibility of biomedical research, targeted to trainees and researchers at any level.

The purpose of the Institutional Research and Academic Career Development Award (IRACDA) Program is to develop a diverse pool of well-trained scientists available to address the nation's biomedical research agenda. The program requires effective partnerships between a research-intensive institution and a teaching-intensive partner institution that has a historical mission or a demonstrated commitment to educating students from groups underrepresented in the biomedical research workforce. The IRACDA program provides support for a mentored postdoctoral research training experience at the research-intensive institution and funding for the IRACDA scholars to develop critical teaching and mentoring skills at a partner institution. The primary goals of the IRACDA program are to develop a diverse pool of well-trained biomedical scientists who have the necessary knowledge and skills to pursue independent academic careers and to enhance science educational offerings at partner institutions. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) does not allow appointed scholars to lead an independent clinical trial, but does allow them to obtain research experience in a clinical trial led by a mentor or co-mentor.

The National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) and VentureWell hold the Design by Biomedical Undergraduate Teams (DEBUT) Challenge which recognizes undergraduate excellence in biomedical innovation. DEBUT will award a total of $100K to undergraduate student teams working on innovative solutions to unmet health and clinical problems. Revised Criteria for 2020 In light of the social distancing measures that kept most students from entering labs this year, we are modifying our criteria to acknowledge teams that had excellent ideas for healthcare innovations but could not build and/or test/debug a prototype. We also want to reward teams who were able to achieve a working prototype. For 2020, each team will receive an ideation score and a prototype score and the team's final score will be the higher of the two.

The purpose of this Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is to transition the core resources and biomedical research activities of Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) into independence and sustainability.

The National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) of the NIH invites applications for renewal of eligible Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) grants. The objective of the COBRE initiative is to strengthen an institution's biomedical research infrastructure through the establishment of a thematic, multi-disciplinary center and to enhance the ability of investigators to compete independently for National Institutes of Health (NIH) individual research grants or other external peer-reviewed support. COBRE awards are supported through the Institutional Development Award (IDeA) Program, which aims to foster health-related research by increasing the competitiveness of investigators at institutions located in IDeA states.
